AWA announces Red Light from Sarah Cho and Priscilla Petraites

Artificial intelligence and sci-fi crime collide in Red Light, the upcoming erotic thriller from comics publisher, AWA. Led by a powerhouse team of strong female creatives, the original story is created and written by comic book newcomer, Sarah Cho, who is known for her swift ascension in both film and TV. With artwork by Priscilla Petraites, the action-packed story is set in a sci-fi universe where A.I. is deeply woven into the fabric of daily life. The 4-issue series launches on November 1, 2023.

In Red Light, Lacy is an A.I. sex worker in a futuristic Red-Light District. Through her perceptiveness and intelligence, Lacy knows what her clients want better than they know themselves. Housed in a high-tech brothel under the watchful eye of the mysterious Mister, Lacy has little in her manufactured life besides work. That is until she befriends Natalie, an orphaned child, who comes into Lacy’s care. When Lacy and Natalie seek to escape, they find themselves flung headlong into the mystery behind Lacy’s creation.

Red Light looks at the intersection of sex and technology in the guise of a futuristic thriller. With A.I. at the forefront of everyone’s mind, Sarah and the creative team explored the age-old question of what makes one human, and what can a man-made creation tell us about ourselves, and the divergent paths technology artificial intelligence can put us on? Vibrant visuals and stunning artwork take readers on a journey to a futuristic world in this on-the-run adventure, where Lacy breaks the boundaries of her confined life to learn exactly what she was made for.

AWA’s Red Light is written and created by writer Sarah Cho with art by Priscilla Petraites. The series is colored by Miroslav Mrva and lettered by Sal Cipriano, with covers by Jeff Dekal and variant covers by Frank Cho.

DC reveals the new Birds of Prey

As part of the “Dawn of DC” storytelling initiative, DC’s new ongoing comic book series Birds of Prey debuts September 5, led by an all-star creative team and featuring fan-favorite characters. Series writer Kelly Thompson has been revealing the Birds of Prey character lineup throughout the week, teasing that leader Black Canary will be joined by Cassandra Cain, Big Barda, Zealot, and Harley Quinn for a dangerous new mission. In her DC comic book series writing debut, Thompson herself has teamed up with her Eisner Award-nominated Hawkeye partners-in-crime, artist Leonardo Romero and colorist Jordie Bellaire, alongside letterer Clayton Cowles for the electrifying series.

In Birds of Prey, Dinah Lance is one of the DC Universe’s most elite fighters, and combined with her sonic scream, she’s a fearsome foe in any scenario…but sometimes even the Black Canary needs help. Faced with a personal mission brought to her by a mysterious new ally, and up against near-impossible odds, she re-forms the Birds of Prey with an unrivaled group—Cassandra Cain, Big Barda, Zealot, and Harley Quinn—with only one goal: extraction of their asset at any cost. What could possibly go wrong? This all-new, all-deadly Birds of Prey is still breaking hearts and faces after all these years!

Birds of Prey #1 will be available at local comic shops on September 5 with a main cover by series artist Leonardo Romero, variant covers by Stanley “Artgerm” Lau and Chris Bachalo, a 1:25 variant by Nick Bradshaw paying homage to the first Birds of Prey series cover by Greg Land and Brian Stelfreeze from January 1999, a 1:50 variant by Chris Bachalo, a 1:100 variant by Leonardo Romero, and a triptych gatefold variant cover by Frank Cho. There will also be a blank sketch cover available.

DC announces Batman: The Brave and the Bold

We’re fans of anthology series, so we’re excited for the upcoming Batman: The Brave and the Bold, a new series debuting May 16th. A “classic” title, the series has been a launch pad for some of the most well known teams and character like The Suicide Squad, Justice League of America, Metamorpho, The Element Man, Teen Titans and more. It has also featured some amazing team-up stories featuring Batman.

Returning in May, the new Batman: The Brave and the Bold features more tales of the Dark Knight as well as stories featuring other superheroes from around the DC Universe. The first issue features four thrilling tales, including the writing debut of one of DC’s top artists.

Tom King and Mitch Gerads reunite for a horrifying four-part retelling of the first bloody clash between The Joker and the Batman. A tale of loathing, lies, and laughter, this may be the most frightening Joker story in a generation.

Artist Dan Mora makes his writing debut kicking off a new series of Batman Black & White short stories. In a Gotham City overrun by the cybernetic henchmen of The Joker, the only person who can save us is the mysterious motorcycle-riding, bat-costumed hero of urban legend…

The Justice League may be gone, but its enemies aren’t. Who’ll protect the world from the worst of the worst? Ed Brisson and Jeff Spokes pick up the story started in the Wildstorm 30th Anniversary Special as Director Bones and his new covert StormWatch team travel the globe on black-ops missions to take super-powered weapons of mass destruction off the board. But this is StormWatch, and as always, not all is as it seems. “Down with the Kings” starts here!

In “The Order of the Black Lamp—Part I,” from writer Christopher Cantwell and artist Javier Rodríguez, Superman finds a decoder ring with a secret message—“Save Me”—which sends him on a quest to solve a mystery with ties to the Man of Steel’s past.

This 64-page blockbuster debut issue arrives in comic book stores and on participating digital platforms on Tuesday, May 16. Issue #1 features a main cover by Simone Di Meo, with open to buy variant covers by Jim Cheung and Frank Cho, with a 1 in 25 ratio variant cover by Bryan Hitch, and a 1 in 50 ratio variant cover by Nathan Szerdy.
