SDCC 2023: Mysteries of the original Secret Wars will be revealed in Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars: Battleworld

In 1984, Marvel’s greatest heroes and deadliest villains were pit against each other on Battleworld by the unbelievably powerful Beyonder in Jim Shooter, Mike Zeck, and Bob Layton’s Secret Wars! Regarded as the pioneer Marvel Comics crossover event, Secret Wars had an undeniable impact on comic book storytelling and to celebrate this landmark series’ 40th anniversary, Marvel will return to Battleworld this November in an all-new four-issue limited series: Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars: Battleworld!

Announced this past weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars: Battleworld is written by Tom DeFalco, former Marvel Comics editor-in-chief and the editor of the original Secret Wars. Joined by acclaimed artist Pat Olliffe, DeFalco will expose never-before-told secrets behind one of the significant conflicts in Marvel history. Fans can expect revelations beyond the Beyonder’s true motives, shocking appearances by characters that you didn’t even know fought in the Secret Wars, and more. Starring iconic super hero best friend duo Spider-Man and the Human Torch, Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars: Battleworld will fit seamlessly between the pages of the beloved original series and hold the answers to questions you never knew you had!

The mysteries of the Secret Wars deepen! Get ready for an all-new cataclysmic battle from when Spider-Man first got his alien costume and a mysterious being called the Beyonder assembled super heroes and villains from Earth to do battle on a patchwork planet. Agatha Harkness’ Contest of Chaos corrupts Marvel’s Heroes!

Mystical manipulator Agatha Harkness is conjuring up a Contest of Chaos and some of Marvel’s biggest heroes, including A-Listers, fan favorites, and rising new stars, will be forced to compete!

Crafted by writer Stephanie Phillips, Contest of Chaos will be an interconnected saga told across eight thrilling Annuals starting in August. Featuring the writing and art of various all-star industry talent, each Contest of Chaos Annual will spotlight an intense showdown between two characters as the forces of chaos compel them to go head-to-head! Throughout the eight over-sized issues, Phillips and artist Alberto Foche will reveal more and more of Agatha’s twisted scheme in bonus backup stories.

Recently rejuvenated and more powerful than ever, Agatha has more stake in the future of the Marvel Universe than ever before, and readers and characters alike are about to see just how committed she is to reshaping Marvel magic! The drama kicks off in next month’s Scarlet Witch Annual #1, a Contest of Chaos prelude issue, by Scarlet Witch writer Steve Orlando and artist Carlos Nieto. It’s been many years, but Secret Invasion was a solid event Marvel put on. Skrulls had infiltrated the superhero community and more creating a level of paranoia that perfectly captured the time it was released. Throughout the event you were left guessing who was indeed a Skrull, not knowing what would be revealed and who might be a traitor or even return! Secret Invasion #1 continues that tradition with another Skrull infiltration. The why or for what remains a mystery but it does a good job of capturing the original event’s fun.

Written by Ryan North, the story has Nick Fury investigating a Skrull “invasion” which spins into something so much more. What’s great is that the issue does what that event so many years ago did well, it taps into today’s zeitgeist. There’s the paranoia of who can you trust but North puts a rejection of reality front and center. It’s hard to not read particular scenes and immediately think of those today who reject the reality of elections and science. North taps that to kick things off but it’s a small slice of what’s to come. The unknown is what made the first event fun and looks like this one will follow in that path.

The art by Francesco Mobili is solid. With color by Jordie Bellaire and lettering by Joe Caramagna the art delivers the paranoia of the story. Small details tease what and who you can and can’t trust bringing a visual tension. There’s also a horror aspect at times as Skrulls are revealed in a “jump scare” on page that delivers dread as to what will happen next.

Secret Invasion #1 is a worthy successor to the event of the same name. While it hits a lot of the same beats to start, it’s fun and entertaining capturing today’s reality. Where it differs will be key and it’ll be exciting to discover that as well as who we can and cannot trust.
