Dauntless Dames is some awesome comic history highlighting classic women characters & their creators

Dauntless Dames: High-Heeled Heroes of the Comics highlights the audacious exploits of ten great adventurous female stars from the Golden Age of comic strips.

In the 1920s they were socialites and flappers. In the 1960s they were homemakers and heartthrobs. But from the late 1930s to the early 1950s, female stars of the newspaper comic strips were detectives, spies, soldiers of fortune, even superheroes. Accomplishing everything the male comics stars of the time achieved, except they did it in high-heels and flowing skirts.

Presented in an extra-large format, here are the colorful, pulse-pounding tales of ten incredible women, both known and unknown to comics fans ― and most are reprinted here for the first time in three-quarters of a century! The book also includes a special bonus: an insert section with a dozen paper doll cutouts starring the most popular women comic strip characters of the day.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Watership Down

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Avengers Inc. #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was interesting with a mix of detective story and superhero antics. We’re intrigued to see where it all goes after the debut.

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #20 (DC Comics) – Head back to Kingdom Come!

Dauntless Dames (Fantagraphics) – The book itself is gorgeous and a solid coffee table book. We like the presentation and the history combining for an education read that’s beautiful to look at.

Green Lantern: War Journal #2 (DC Comics) – The first issue was amazing with some solid teases, horror, action, and drama. We’re hoping for more of the mix in this grounded superhero series.

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #1 (DC Comics) – The concept is so silly but we’re in all the way and excited for it.

Local Man #6 (Image Comics) – The first volume was fantastic with a nice mix of new and old superheroics. It’s one of the best superhero comics of the year and we’re excited to see where this next arc goes. Jack must investigate a drowning on dry land.

The Man From Maybe #1 (Oni Press) – A postmodern, post apocalyptic epic of Western-infused action. The art looks cool and we’re excited to read the first issue.

Sensational She-Hulk #1 (Marvel) – We’re hoping the new series has the same fun as the television show.

Subgenre #1 (Dark Horse) – A man is living two lives. He is a private detective in a dystopian cyberpunk future trying to solve a triple murder. But when he falls asleep… he wakes up as a wandering adventurer in a barbaric fantasy world where magic exists. Is he two separate people? Or is he a third person that has undergone a psychotic split? New Matt Kindt? Yes please!

Watership Down (Ten Speed Press) – A faithful graphic novel adaptation of Richard Adams’ beloved story.

Panels + Workshops:

Saturday, September 9th at 12:00 pm in the White Oak Room, Horror Of The Everyday : Sometimes, the most effective horror stories aren’t about jump scares and blood. Sometimes, they spring out of mundane and everyday situations, slowly turning reality into something terrifying. Be it a dog that slowly takes over someone’s life, demons silently interfering with a couple, or a woman’s desperate need for motherhood driving her to terrifying extremes, the horror of the everyday is often the most terrifying because it feels so familiar. Join moderator Dr. Rachel S. Miller along with panelists Nicole Goux (Pet Peeves), Julia Gfrörer (Too Dark To SeeVision), Beth Hetland (Tender), and King Ray (Phonestoned) as they explore their own takes on horror.

Saturday, September 9th at 2:00 pm in the White Oak Room, Spotlight on Bill Griffith and Three Rocks: The Story Of Ernie Bushmiller: Bill Griffith is a legend of the underground comics era, co-editing Arcade and syndicated his surreal Zippy The Pinhead strip for nearly fifty years. His new book, Three Rocks: The Story Of Ernie Bushmiller, is his latest graphic novel, detailing the creator of Nancy’s life and the influence that strip had on him. He’ll be joined in conversation by writer, historian, and critic Paul Gravett, made immortal as “The Man At The Crossroads” by Eddie Campbell.

Saturday, September 9th at 3:30 pm in the White Flint Amphitheater, History On The Ground: Personal Accounts: When history books are written, they rarely take into account how momentous events affect individuals. Eleri Mai Harris (The Nib) will discuss how larger historical events informed the personal stories told by the panelists. Join Ana Penyas (We’re All Just Fine), Derf (Kent State), Tracy White (Unaccompanied), and Michael Cherkas (Red Harvest) as they reveal personal and unexamined perspectives on history.

Saturday, September 9th at 5:00 pm in the White Oak Room, Carousel: Comics Performances: Since 1997, R. Sikoryak has hosted Carousel, a series of comics readings and visual performances by cartoonists and theater artists, presented around the U.S. and Canada. This special edition of Carousel at SPX features exhibiting artists and guests, performing live. Join us for an audio-visual journey to the place where comics and performance collide! Featuring: Lawrence Lindell (Blackward), Breena Nuñez (The NibThe New Yorker), Jonathan Baylis (So Buttons), Robyn Smith (Wash Day Diaries), Kayla E. (Precious Rubbish). and R. Sikoryak (Constitution Illustrated).

Saturday, September 9th at 6:00 pm in the White Oak Room, New Approaches to Nonfiction: Pushing the Form: This panel will focus on creators using innovative approaches to the form in their nonfiction comics. Working on topics ranging from history, journalism, graphic medicine and neuroscience, cartoonists will discuss how nonfiction comics can explore the most exciting possibilities of the form. Moderator Dr. Francesca Lyn will join Dan Nott (Hidden Systems), Whit Taylor (The Greater Good), Box Brown (TetrisCannabis), and Briana Loewinsohn (Ephemera: A Memoir) as they discuss their approaches to nonfiction narratives.

Sunday, September 10th at 1:00 pm in the Glen Echo Room, Resiliency Narratives With Natalie Norris: In this workshop we gather to learn techniques for approaching memoir stories that we find difficult to tell but feel compelled to share. We’ll focus on the resiliency that grows out of personal stories about adversity, illness, and survival and how you can harness your strength to face these kinds of memoirs. This workshop will include discussion and a drawing activity. All skill levels are welcome, drawing materials will be provided. Sign up here!

Sunday, September 10th at 1:30 pm in the White Oak Room, Subgenres Of Memoir: Memoir comics have expanded from simply depicting personal narratives to dipping into the tropes of other genres. Paul Gravett moderates a panel of memoirists whose work spills over into different storytelling styles. The artists are Eddie Campbell (the meta-memoir The Second Fake Death Of Eddie Campbell), MariNaomi (the mystery-memoir I Thought You Loved Me), Elizabeth Trembley (the multiple points of view narrative Look Again), and Kayla E. (the reclaimed-image memoir Precious Rubbish).

Sunday, September 10th at 4:00 pm in the White Flint Amphitheater, Immersive Worlds: Complex Depictions Of Environments: There are cartoonists who pay as much or even more attention to depictions of the worlds they create as they do to their characters. For some, it’s even more important. Whether it’s densely-inked backgrounds or vivid colors dominating each panel, a complex environment tells its own story. Moderator Rob Clough joins Wren McDonald (Cyber Realm), Rosemary Valero-O’Connell (Don’t Go Without Me), K. Wroten (Eden II), and Daria Tessler (Salome’s Last Dance) as they discuss their immersive worlds.

Eden II is an intriguing graphic novel focused on consumerism and digital culture

In the grungy, punk-inflected world K. Wroten creates, a cast of disaffected young characters struggle to find their purpose in life. Faced with a dying Earth and numbingly useless jobs, protagonists Ellis and Dr. Otis Heck invent an immersive virtual reality game, Eden II. But when Heck betrays Ellis and sells the game to a mysterious corporation, the lines between fantasy and reality begin to blur. As each chapter highlights a new character in the ensemble, the game’s impact grows as the world becomes consumed by fantasy.

Cloven Book Two is so good taking you deeper into the world and featuring amazing art

Dr. Kenneth Langner, a world-renowned geneticist and creator of the Cloven species, reveals himself to Seattle Stranger reporter Jake Arthur, who continues his in-depth research on the homeless encampment known as “the Jungle.” When Langner turns up dead the next morning, Arthur realizes he’s into something far more sinister than he realized. Meanwhile, in an effort to evade the para-military that have begun rounding up Cloven, Tuck is taken to Halcyon Meadows, a bizarre retreat of the true insiders–Supreme court justices, ex-presidents, movie stars, rock musicians, health gurus–those who are really in the know and who gather there every summer to worship goats. And to celebrate the existence of the first human/goat hybrid: The Cloven. And that’s when things really start to get weird.
