Review: Extermination #3

With Ahab hunting the time-traveling X-Men, it’s all hands on deck, as every X-Men team is called to arms and protect the remaining young mutants. But young Jean Grey and her bodyguards aren’t going to lie still for Ahab to come to them…

Events are in full swing right now and this latest X-event has not only been entertaining, it has far exceeded expectations. Extermination #3 ups the action with betrayals and moments that will get long time X fans to say “hell yeah.”

Writer Ed Brisson has focused on the time-displaced original X-Men and Ahab who has come back in time to do something to them. There’s also a younger Cable who’s up to something. This issue focuses on the plan to split up the remaining original X-Men in hopes of slowing down Ahab’s quest.

The battle in the X-Mansion continuing from last issue is solid and full of action with a solid explanation as to how Ahab is creating his new hounds. Yes, I said plural because more characters turn and each of those deliver entertaining moments. It also brings back something that felt so innocent before and shows it as anything but.

There’s the moments between Domino and Jean Grey as Domino explains her team’s connection with Cable which of course sets up the upcoming series featuring X-Force. To see these original members back together after so long is fantastic and again as a long time reader, it nails the nostalgia factor.

There’s also the sequence with the young Cyclops and a creative way to take care of him. That shows off a legacy character in a way that may get you to rethink their power and how they can use it to do a lot more damage than they have in the past.

The art by Pepe Larraz is fantastic and there are panels and scenes that look amazing. One in particular with Cannonball and Shatterstar with the background getting a little hazy is a work of brilliance and the visuals for the series match the excitement of the story itself. This is one of the few times where so much packed in really works as no detail is overlooked.

The event continues at a breakneck speed and delivers excitement that’s not expected and very welcome. It’s another example that events can work and work really well. It brings together so many different threads and delivers weaving in old and new. Add in fantastic art and you’ve got an X-event that’s one of the best in recent years.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Doomsday Clock #7 (DC Comics) – After a bit of a break, the DC event is back and we’re still intrigued as to where it’s all going as it moves into the latter half of its run.

Edge of Spider-Geddon #4 (Marvel) – Each issue so far in this lead up to the main event has been fantastic. All its done is made us wish that each of these characters had their own series! We expect no less from this one.

Extermination #3 (Marvel) – When it comes to the Mutants, Marvel and them seem to be their best when it involves crazy time travel stories. This one has been lots of action and shockers and this is another we have no idea where it’s all going.

Faith: Dreamside #1 (Valiant) – Faith is always a fun time and mixing her with the Dreamside? Yeah, we’re in for that.

Fantasmagoria #1 (Starburns Industries Press) – A horror comic that explors mythology specific to Mexico. That alone has us intrigued to check it all out.

Fearscape #1 (Vault Comics) – This one sounds a bit like a new take on the Sandman and that sort of storytelling. Vault has some fantastic releases so we’re excited to check this out and see what it’s all about.

Fence #10 (BOOM! Studios) – This series has been fantastic bringing the sports manga concept to the twist. BOOM! has been killing it when it comes to that and this one has been amazing with every issue.

Friendo #1 (Vault Comics) – A personal marketing VR has gone haywire. Again, Vault has been top notch when it comes to releases so we’re excited to check this one out.

Gamma #1 (Dark Horse Comics) – Pokémon meets Power Rangers… um ok. Sounds awesome to us!

Heroes in Crisis #1 (DC Comics) – There’s been a hell of a build up to this new event series that explores the trauma that superheroes experience.

High Heaven #1 (AHOY Comics) – AHOY’s first release was amazing and we’re expecting more of the same from this upstart publisher that wants to deliver more when it comes to comics.

Illegal (Sourcebooks) – A powerful graphic novel exploring immigration and undocumented immigrants.

Infinity Wars: Iron Hammer #1 (Marvel) – The first issue that mashed together Captain America and Thor was fun and this one with that’s Iron Man and Thor? We’re expecting lots of drinking… and more fun.

Justice League Odyssey #1 (DC Comics) – The space/tech Justice League… you have out attention.

Man-Eaters #1 (Image Comics) – Chelsea Cain… nuff said.

Scarlet #2 (Jinxworld/DC Comics) – The first issue was a great return for the character and series and we want to see if the second issue can continue to deliver.

Spider-Geddon #0 (Marvel) – The newest Spider-Man event is kicking off and Marvel has been rocking it with the Multiverse Spider-Man stuff. Plus, this issue marks the debut of the recent video game version of the character.

Star Trek vs. Transformers #1 (IDW Publishing) – The title really says it all.

Stranger Things #1 (Dark Horse Comics) – The popular television show comes to comics.

Transformers: Lost Light #24 (IDW Publishing) – IDW is wrapping up their current run on Transformers and we have no idea what’s coming next. We just know this series is wrapping up and bringing all the pieces of the puzzle together.

The Comichron – Strong X-Men week as Return of Wolverine, Extermination lead comic shop reorders – Not too surprising. We’re due for an X-Men come back and Extermination has been very good and not on the radar as much as it should be.

CBR – Alec Baldwin Won’t Play Thomas Wayne in Joker Origin Movie – Ok…. So maybe the other reports were clickbait bullshit?

Review: Extermination #2

Cyclops. Iceman. Angel. Beast. Marvel Girl. The original team of teen mutants brought together by Professor Charles Xavier many years ago have been shunted through time to find a world they barely recognize but were determined to help. Now, finding themselves targeted for death, the future of mutantkind lies squarely in the hands of its past.

The first issue of Extermination was a gut punch with the death of both Bloodstorm and Cable and Ahab on the hunt. There was the rather interesting twist of a younger Cable up to something as well, as the issue delivered the beginning of what feels like a chess match, pieces maneuvered on a table.

Writer Ed Brisson doesn’t reveal much more in Extermination #2 as the action continues and the X-Men attempt to figure out what’s going on and what to do next. They’re confused, scared, desperate, and angry, and all of that comes off as a bit chaotic. Brisson is delivering mood and atmosphere plenty in this issue, much like the first. The energy leaps off the page to a point it’s hard to not experience a little of that emotion yourself.

The second issue also reveals a little without spoiling the whole. We still don’t know what Ahab wants other than killing the younger X-Men. We don’t know what Cable wants other than kidnapping the younger X-Men. We just go wit the flow and that low information enhances the emotions of the comics. We’re told exactly how much we should and need to know. That mystery is one of the strongest aspects of this and the first issue.

The art by Pepe Larraz with colors by Marte Garcia and lettering from Joe Sabino is fantastic. There’s a lot of characters here and while the detail might lack in some scenes where they’re all there, when the action gets rolling there’s a certain chaos about it that enhances Brisson’s story. There’s emotion too as the younger X-Men deal with the fact they’re being hunted and a friend of theirs is missing. The balance between action and quieter moments look great and there’s some really cool panel layouts as the action gets rolling.

The issue gives the reader just what they need to know and leaves with a reveal that had our jaws dropping in both the opening and the end. There’s so much to unpack in the final moments and thankfully we have to wait just a few weeks to read the next chapter. After some false starts as far as events, Extermination feels like a positive throwback to some of the action packed events of the past.

Extermination #2 (Marvel) – Events have been all over in quality in recent years but the first issue of this one surprised us in the quality and how far it was willing to go.

Harbinger Wars 2 #4 (Valiant) – Their recent event wraps up and we want to see how it ends so we have a better idea as to where the Valiant universe is heading next.

Hunt for Wolverine: Dead Ends #1 (Marvel) – This hit and miss series of miniseries had important moments and this issue ties them all together, we hope.

Rick & Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons #1 (IDW Publishing/Oni Press) – Two properties we can’t believe are coming together.

Scarlet #1 (Jinxworld/DC Comics) – We loved this series when it debuted focused on a rather militant activism. Politically relevant, we can’t wait to see what comes next.

Review: Extermination #1

Cyclops. Iceman. Angel. Beast. Marvel Girl. The original team of teen mutants brought together by Professor Charles Xavier many years ago have been shunted through time to find a world they barely recognize but were determined to help. Now, finding themselves targeted for death, the future of mutantkind lies squarely in the hands of its past.

The original X-Men have been in the “present” for quite some time leaving open so many questions, one major one being will they ever return to their past? If so, will they forget their current adventures? And, what impact on the future their adventures may have?

Extermination seems to be bringing all of these things together as some event in the future is caused by the original X-Men’s existence in the present. Written by Ed Brisson, the first issue hearkens to some classic X-Men stories as Ahab, with some hounds, as well as a mysterious character are on the hunt for the original X-Men. Why? We’re not sure other than something major in the future is due to them. The first issue is the quiet and the storm with lots of action and drama as folks scramble to attempt to figure out what’s going on. It’s chaos in a good way as the panic bleeds off of the page.

Some of that feeling of panic is in part due to the art of Pepe Larraz, with color from Marte Garcia and lettering by Joe Sabino, whose style is fantastic. The characters look great and there’s so much detail in every panel. Larraz balances the action and the emotional panic quite well delivering art that amplifies the emotion of the page.

And then there’s the “death.” Yes, a major character is killed in the first issue with a reveal as to who did it. The implications and the trippy aspect of it all is quite interesting and leaves you wondering even more as to what’s going on and who’s on what side.

The first issue feels like the start of something great, an event that begins in a way that immediately makes you think it’ll be an action packed epic story that’ll go down as a classic and launch the X-Men into the future (or the past).
