Gerard Way Makes His Marvel Debut For Edge of Spider-Verse #5!

Prepare for the biggest Spider-Man event of all-time as every Spider-Man from every universe unites to stop a threat that could spell extinction for their kind! Today, Marvel is proud to present your first look at Edge of Spider-Verse #5 – the final chapter in the blockbuster 5-issue mini-series showcasing different Spider-Men (and women) of the Spider-Verse! Eisner Award-winning writer Gerard Way makes his Marvel debut alongside rising star artist Jake Wyatt for a Spider-Man tale unlike any other!

In an interview with Marvel.com, Way said:

In a futurist city fairly different from the New York we are familiar with, our version of Spider-Man takes the shape of a government project: SP//dr. SP//dr is comprised of three vital components: a pilot, a machine, and a radioactive sentient spider acting as one half of the brain that makes it all work. Peni Parker is a young girl, who, left parentless, is adopted by her Aunt May and Uncle Ben, the two heads of the SP//dr project. When they realize Peni is the only one who can successfully pair with SP//dr, they make the unorthodox decision to train her as SP//dr’s newest pilot.

As Peni Parker suits up in her incredible spider-powered armor, explore the incredible new universe she inhabits. Yet even though, she pilots her unstoppable machine, it still may not be enough to save her universe from the onslaught of Morlun. Edge of Spider-Verse concludes in grand fashion this October as Way & Wyatt take you to an incredible new universe in Edge of Spider-Verse #5!

Review: Edge Of Spider-Verse #2

sg02The premise being the series Edge of Spider-Verse is a fairly basic one, at least by comic standards. There exist a number of worlds beyond the usual base of Marvel, and in each of these worlds a different Spider-Man has come forward through similar but different reasons. Some looming threat to all Spider-Men and Women is looming and it will require the efforts of all of them to save them all. In this second issue we receive a new story, which on its surface would seem to be unable to fail, where Gwen Stacy is cast as Spider Woman. In reality the tag of Spider-Woman is not that accurate, as the character has little to do with Jessica Drew, and rather is more like a teenage version of Spider-Man, in other words a Spider-Girl.

What If … ? # 105 in 1998 asked the question of what would happen if one day one of Peter Parker’s children became took on the role and responsibility only in this case that this was his daughter. This was one of the most successful issues of the series and launched the character of May Parker into her own series and her own universe (known as MC2).  With such a precedent before them this issue seemed as though it might not be able to fail. While it is interesting enough, it doesn’t quite reach the level of this predecessor.

The cover that launched a universe

The cover that launched a universe

The first problem would be one of characterizations.  With the introduction of the character May Parker, fans were given the opportunity to associate with a brand new character. In this case, it is less so. Instead this new Gwen Stacy, while a little bit different becomes a pastiche of several different characters that fans will be familiar with. In so doing a little bit of the edge is taken off as it comes across as something that we have all heard before. Incidentally there is a notable design element here which comes with the introduction of the new character. That is to say, that Gwen Stacy as Spider-Woman (Girl) is visually appealing but the story doesn’t match the visuals.

It doesn’t end up being quite as much of a disappointment, as even as a non-fan of the character’s part of the Marvel Universe, that this is still an interesting and even fun read. The problem more so is that it feels at the same time like a missed opportunity. I have not read the first issue of this series, but if each Spider-Man is only a slightly different version of the character, with basically the same origin story told, then it would seem as though the creative staff is not challenging themselves enough. This thus becomes most evident in the artwork as compared to the writing. The artistic team here was willing to break all the rules for the new character, but the writing team stuck to what already made sense, and the payoff is evidently just not as good as it could be.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

the bunker 6 coverWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in! Below are ten suggestions of comics, graphic novels, or trade paperbacks you should spend some extra time checking out and think about picking up.

Pick of the Week: The Bunker #6 (Oni Press) – He came from the future to save the world, but, is the only way to save it to destroy it? Young and Old Grady meet, and the fate of the world hangs in the balance. Joshua Hale Fialkov and Joe Infurnari’s series will be at the top of numerous “best of” lists when this year is up.

Archer & Armstrong #24 (Valiant) – Valiant has the best universe out there, and what they’ve put together has been amazing, what a cohesive comic universe should be. Archer & Armstrong is an awesome example of their series, mixing humor and action with every issue.

Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers #2 (Dynamite) – Joe Casey and Nathan Fox are continuing their run on one of Jack Kirby‘s greatest creations, Captain Victory! The first issue exceeded my expectations, to the point we wanted to see what happened next. Bring on issue two!

Copperhead #1 (Image) – Westerns are a genre that are hit and miss in comics (and in general). This new series mixes in some sci-fi, in an extra long first issue for the regular price.

Death of Wolverine #2 (Marvel) – The first issue blew us away. Our cynicism was prepared for a cash in, but the writing of Charles Soule and art of Steve McNiven is an amazing combo for this fitting send-off.

Edge of Spider-Verse #1 (Marvel) – A Spider-Man centric event brings together wall crawlers from around the multiverse to deal with a killer who is hunting them down.

Prometheus: Fire and Stone #1 (Dark Horse) – Dark Horse is relaunching the Alien/Predator/Prometheus universe in comics. This series promises to bridge the cap between Prometheus and Alien, and hopefully right some of the wrongs from the movie. No matter, we want more Alien!

Stumptown Vol. 3 #1 (Oni Press) – Greg Rucka‘s fan favorite private eye is back, and now it’s an ongoing series! If you haven’t read the first two volumes of the series, you’re still good to pick up this one. The detective Dex has to get to the bottom of some violence before a heated rivalry transforms into war.

Wild’s End #1 (BOOM! Studios) – When a rural English community of the 1930s is the victim of an alien invasion, the residents’ lives are upended by the harsh realities of life-and-death violence. Led by the town’s outsider and retired war veteran, they will have to rally together to uncover the secret of their invaders and ultimately fight back. Writer Dan Abnett does War of the Worlds!

The Walking Dead #131 (Skybound/Image) – Did you read the last issue!? That ending alone is the reason this issue winds up on the list. What the hell is going to happen next?
