D+Q TO PUBLISH DANIEL CLOWES’ THE DEATH-RAY IN 2011

As reported on the Comics Reporter, Drawn & Quarterly has acquired world rights to Daniel Clowes’ Eisner, Harvey and Ignatz winning comic, The Death-Ray, it was announced today by Chris Oliveros, Editor-in-Chief, Acquiring Editor and Publisher of Drawn & Quarterly.

“The Death-Ray is one of the most perfect and fully realized comics of the past decade and it is nothing short of the highest honour to publish,” said Chris Oliveros, Editor-In-Chief and Publisher of Drawn Quarterly. “The story of the alienated Andy is drawn and written to perfection with Dan’s signature subtle humour, stylistic eloquence, and understated social commentary–showcasing all of the hallmarks of why Dan is one of the preeminent cartoonists of the comics medium.”

The Death-Ray will be in stores as a hardcover graphic novel in Fall 2011. It is the story of the teen outcast Andy, an orphaned nobody with only one friend, the obnoxious-but-loyal Louie. They roam school halls and city streets, invisible to everyone but bullies and tormentors, until the glorious day when Andy takes his first puff on a cigarette. That night he wakes, heart pounding, soaked in sweat, and finds himself suddenly overcome with the peculiar notion that he can do anything. Indeed, he can and as he learns the extent of his new powers, he discovers a terrible and seductive gadget – a hideous compliment to his seething rage – that forever changes everything. The Death-Ray utilizes the classic staples of the superhero genre – origin, costume, ray-gun. sidekick, fight scene – reconfiguring them in a story that is anything but morally simplistic. With subtle comedy, deft mastery and an obvious affection for the bold Pop Art exuberance of comic book design, Daniel Clowes delivers a contemporary meditation on the the darkness of the human psyche.

Nicole Aragi represented Clowes in negotiations. The Death-Ray will be published in North America by D+Q and will be distributed in the U.S. by Farrar, Straus & Giroux and in Canada by Raincoast Books. International rights excluding France will be represented by Samantha Haywood of the Transatlantic Literary Agency.

Motion-picture rights to The Death-Ray are in development with Jack Black’s Electric Dynamite Productions, with noted director Chris Milk attached to direct.

Developing Iconographies

Distinct from drawing as an art discipline with its own self-ratifying
purpose, artists in comics create pictures as part of a visual
language. Moderator Ken Parille will investigate the ways in which
comics artists develop visual iconographies in individual works and
throughout bodies of work. Cartoonists Eamon Espey, Kevin Huizenga,
and Tom Kaczynski will participate in this discussion, illustrated
with slides of the artists’ work.

Autobiography in Pieces

How do you tell the story of a life that’s still in progress? Is
“story” even the right way to think about it? How do you winnow down
the manifold details and data of your life? Cartoonists Sarah Becan,
Gabrielle Bell, Vanessa Davis, and Jesse Reklaw will discuss
alternatives to the memoir with moderator Isaac Cates.

R. Sikoryak: Adaptation and Parody

Comics chameleon R. Sikoryak inventively adapts canonical Western
literature using the visual styles and characters of historical
American comic books and comic strips. These works have been collected
in his 2009 book Masterpiece Comics (Drawn and Quarterly). Sikoryak
will reveal his intensive working process and will discuss the history
of parody and adaptation in comics in a discussion with Bill
Kartalopoulos, curator of the recent exhibit “R. Sikoryak: How
Classics and Cartoons Collide.”

Oh yes, it is San Diego time again, and this year the fine, fine people of Comic-Con International have invited four D+Q cartoonists to be special guests of the convention, complete with spotlight panels: Gabrielle Bell, Vanessa Davis, James Sturm and Jillian Tamaki. I don’t believe we have ever had a year at San Diego with so many official special guests and so many conventions debuts. The heavenly moons of comics are aligned, people.

4:00–5:00 The Center for Cartoon Studies—Comic-Con special guest James Sturm, known for his graphic novels such as The Golem’s Mighty Swing, is also the director of The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS), a school located in the historic downtown village of White River Junction, Vermont. The school offers a two-year course of study that centers on the creation and dissemination of comics, graphic novels, and other manifestations of the visual narrative. The faculty includes renowned comics artists such as Stephen Bissette and Jason Lutes. James will talk about the school and the books the students have produced. Room 7AB
