RZA’s 36 Chambers Team with Devil’s Due Comics to Develop Samurai in a Hoodie

House of Logic and 36 Chambers have found a publisher for their new comic book project, Samurai in a Hoodie, in Devil’s Due Comics. House of Logic, Co-Founded by Artist Glyph Sputnik, and 36 Chambers, co-founded and operated by Wu-Tang’s RZA will be working with Devil’s Due founder Josh Blaylock to develop Samurai as a 360 degree brand featured in comics, music, apparel, and entertainment.

Samurai explores themes of being a loner and outsider while surrounded by millions of people in an urban metropolis, the humor it sometimes takes to survive in the inner city, and intense, supernatural martial arts action from cover to cover.

Sputnik, whose comic combines classic American Comics, Manga, and Afrofuturism, is joined by co-collaborators Nikiya Price (Sputnik’s Co-Founder and sister, hailing from the worlds of academic publishing and product development), RZA, Mustafa Shaikh – Co-Founder of 36 Chambers, and Amby Warhol – Chicago based creative and Editor at House of Logic.

In the wake of Covid-19, a release date has not yet been set for the comic book series, but an inaugural release is planned for late Fall, with production well underway.

Devil’s Due Launches Ballot Box Comics focused on Progressive Politics and Populist Movements

Months after releasing 2019’s Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Freshman Force, Chicago’s Devil’s Due Comics has announced the formation of Ballot Box Comics: an imprint (a.k.a. subsidiary division) dedicated to progressive politics and populist movements that challenge both the right and the center-left. The new imprint will create content with a political leaning that “pushes back against this administration’s off-the-rails status quo.”

Ballot Box Comics’ mandate is to produce original titles for the percentage of the country that believes in such ‘radical’ causes as social equality and standing up to government corruption. The release, and success, of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Freshman Force was a sign for the publisher that politically and socially-minded comic book readers are seriously underrepresented leading to the formation of the new imprint.

Ballot Box Comics’ flagship release is entitled Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Freshman Force: Ballot Box Collection. the 144-page trade paperback will be available at physical and online retailers on April 22, 2020, with pre-orders now available at www.OcasioComic.com. The book is chock full of short-form comics (depicting AOC, her Squad, and Bernie Sanders as corruption-fighting superheroes), satirical games, puzzles, Trump and GOP skewering, and much more. Conceived by Blaylock, The Ballot Box Collection features contributions by numerous award-winning artists, and contains three comics in one paperback collection:

  • Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Freshman Force: Squad Special (Brand new!)
  • Talk Bernie to Me: The Bernie Sanders Special & AOC Surprise (released July 2019)
  • Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Freshman Force: New Party, Who Dis? (released May 2019)

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Freshman Force: Ballot Box Collection features contributions from several acclaimed and award-winning writers/artists, including Jill Thompson, Dean Haspiel, Jose Garibaldi, Josh Blaylock, Tim Seeley, Gustavo Vasquez, Marguerite Dabaie, Christa Cassano, Travis Hymel, Pat Shand, K. Lynn Smith, Kit Caoagas, Larry Watts, Bob Sikoryak, Adam McGovern, Nick Accardi, Shawn DePasquale, Elizabeth Marley Kim, Jason Goungor, Sherard Jackson, Peter Rostovsky, Jeffrey Burandt, Sean Von Gorman, and more.

How To Self-Publish Comics: Not Just Create Them Gets a 5th Edition

How To Self-Publish Comics

Devil’s Due Comics founder Josh Blaylock is offering up over 20 years’ worth of industry secrets in his all-new DIY manual, How To Self-Publish Comics: Not Just Create Them. The 168-page guide — significantly updated for 2019/2020 — is an anomaly in DIY literature, in that it features a successful artist sharing wisdom about everything but the creative.

In lieu of providing instructions on how to write or draw, How To Self-Publish Comics explains how to successfully navigate the industry once you’ve honed those skills. Blaylock bypasses the industry jargon with clear and simple instructions on:

  • Building Your Publishing Infrastructure
  • Forming Your Creative Team
  • Sales & Marketing
  • Determining, engaging with, and maintaining your key fan base
  • Conventions
  • Crowdfunding
  • Digital Publishing

How To Self-Publish Comics also includes (and demystifies) purchase orders, invoices, printer quotes, and other must-know components of the publishing process. The book is an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at the way the comic book industry works, from concept to shelf.

SDCC 2019: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and “The Squad” are a Superhero Team Fighting Racism and Corruption

Devil’s Due Comics unveiled a two-pronged surprise on Saturday at San Diego’s Comic-Con: 1) there will be a second volume of its now-infamous AOC comic, and 2) the issue — entitled Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Freshman Force: The Squad Special — will depict all four members of The House of Representatives’ ‘Squad’ (AOC, Omar, Pressley, Tlaib) as a racism and corruption-fighting superhero team.

The issue will have a December 2019 release and is available for pre-order at OcasioComic.com as of Saturday. Devil’s Due is eager to partner with comic book retailers in the coming weeks, for a series of variant Special Squad covers. The current edition (cover subtitled ‘We’re Not Going Anywhere!’) will have a portion of proceeds donated to Raices Texas, a non-profit that provides legal services to immigrants and refugees for immigration protections. The alternate-cover version (subtitled ‘We’re Not Going Anywhere, Motherfucker!’) is limited to 500 copies, with the entirety of its proceeds donated to immigration charities President Trump will most certainly hate.

The upcoming sequel will see AOC and her fellow ‘Squad’ members engage in a series of super-heroic mini-adventures, as they take on President Trump and the GOP establishment from within.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Alexandria Ocasio Cortez & the Freshman Force: Who Dis? (Devil’s Due Comics) – We’re a sucker for these types of comics and we’ll admit the political nerds in us are really interested in seeing exactly what’s within the pages of this issue.

All-Time Comics Zerosis Deathscape #0 (Floating World Comics) – An all-new five issue miniseries and if it’s like the previous releases, we’re psyched. This superhero world is a mix of modern and classic and just a lot of pulp action fun.

Black Badge #10 (BOOM! Studios) – One of the best comics on the market, it’s a twisted take on a Boy Scouts like group that’s used to recruit and train young assassins. You can learn more about the history of the program here!

Fathom Vol. 8 #1 (Aspen Comics) – Aspen has been hit and miss lately with a few false starts over the years but they seem to be more focused this time and we’re excited to see if this new volume reflects a renewed Aspen.

Giant-Man #1 (Marvel) – The many individuals who have used that name come together in this War of the Realms tie-in and we’re kind of excited for it.

Last Stop on the Red Line #1 (Dark Horse) – A supernatural crime story from Paul Maybury and Sam Lotfi that has us really intrigued to check it out.

Marvel Action: Spider-Man #4 (IDW Publishing) – IDW’s Marvel line has been great for kids and each issue a lot of fun. So, check it out, especially if you’re looking for comics for kids.

Planet of the Nerds #2 (AHOY Comics) – The first issue was funny and AHOY packs so much in each and every issue they put out. Just a great value for your dollar.

Science Comics: Cars, Engines that Move You (First Second) – First Second’s graphic novels in this line are fantastic if you want to learn more about the topic. This is solid for kids and adults who want to learn.

War of the Realms #4/War of the Realms: Spider-Man & the League of Realms #1/War of the Realms: Strikeforce – War Avengers #1 (Marvel) – We’re suckers for this, we’ll be honest. The event has been very hit and miss but we’re hoping it turns around. It has to, right?

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez And The Freshman Force from Devil’s Due Comics this May

To ring in the newest butt-kicking Democratic members of Congress, Devil’s Due Comics has assembled a team of acclaimed artists to create the mother of all one-off commemorative comics: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez And The Freshman Force. Issue #1, New Party: Who Dis? (which doubles as the final issue!) drops this May 15, and sees AOC engage in a series of super-heroic mini-adventures as she takes on the GOP establishment from within. To boot, this animated anthology satirically skewers everyone from President Trump to his near-endless team of morally-compromised Republican cronies. Bonus: Activities and games like “Where’s Mitch?” will take you back to a simpler time. Extra bonus: Alternate Collector’s Edition covers at OcasioComic.com!

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez And The Freshman Force comes ten years after the debut of the wildly-popular Devil’s Due Barack the Barbarian comic series, which chronicled the bone-crushing exploits of our 44th President. Both are the brainchild of artist and Devil’s Due Publisher Josh Blaylock.

A portion of all sales will go to America’s United Service Organization (USO), and RaicesTexas.org, which provides free and low-cost legal services to under-served immigrant children, families, and refugees.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez And The Freshman Force features contributions from several acclaimed and award-winning writers/artists, including Jill Thompson (a Neil Gaiman collaborator and creator of the Scary Godmother graphic novels and TV special), Dean Haspiel (Emmy-winning title designer and longtime collaborator with Harvey Pekar on American Splendor), Jose Garibaldi (Lego Movie 2, TMNT, Captain Underpants graphic novels), and more, including a cover by Tim Seeley (artist/writer of numerous iconic comic book series, including Hack/Slash, Nightwing, Grayson, Green Lantern, Batman).

Devil’s Due Entertainment Becomes Devil’s Due Comics, Launching Two New Titles and Focusing on Creator-Owned

This Summer Devil’s Due Entertainment’s titles will be getting a facelift as the brand changes its name to Devil’s Due Comics. A shift happening to reflect its new Publishing Platform for creator-owned titles.

The first two titles to be released under Devil’s Due Comics are horror title Little Girl (a 4-issue miniseries debuting in July) by writer Pat Shand and artist Olivia Pelaez, and video game homage Final Street (special launch issue dropping in June) by writer Scott Schmidt and artist Brian Atkins.

While most of the changes will remain invisible to the general public, other than a new logo, the company is focusing on alternative deal structures that appeal to what it sees as a growing culture of self-sufficient creators controlling their own properties through social media engagement and comicon weekend “road warrior” promotion. The new platform offers simpler royalty structures for store sales and even flexible one-year contracts. Creators will be allowed a more hands-on, DIY approach to their books, using a web interface developed by Devil’s Due founder Josh Blaylock, which is all part of what he sees as a need in the indie market.

As for its previously existing titles, everything remains as it has been, with creators possibly shifting their publishing arrangements over to the new platform on a case by case basis.

Devil’s Due Comics will continue to be released through comic shops via Diamond under the umbrella label Devil’s Due / 1First Comics.

The company is not accepting open solicitations from the public at this time, and is prepping more titles to be announced later in 2018.
