Apes Top Robots at the Box Office

It’s not much of a surprise, but Dawn of the Planet of the Apes topped the weekend box office earning an estimated $73 million. That debut is about a 33% improvement from 2011’s Planet of the Apes which debuted with $54.8 million.

The film’s audience was 58% male and 55% over the age of 25. Diversity was also present with the crowd roughly 48% Caucasian, 23% African-American, 16% Hispanic, and 14% Asian. The film received an A- CinemaScore and is currently at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

When it comes to other comic related movies, Transformers: Age of Extinction dropped to second, earning $16.5 million. Domestically the film has earned $209 million and internationally $543.5 million.

The Edge of Tomorrow earned an additional $1.865 million the past weekend to bring it’s domestic gross to $94.55 million in it’s sixth week at the box office. Internationally the film has earned $256 million.

X-Men: Days of Future Past was in 16th place adding a little over $1 million to bring the domestic total to $229.2 million. Internationally the film has earned $731.4 million.

Snowpiercer added $677,000 to it’s total and brings the domestic amount to $2.7 million. Internationally the film has earned $80.2 million. Interestingly in this third week of release the film was released on video on demand, so the amount earned that way isn’t reflected in the total.

As far as worldwide grosses for 2014 of comic related movies, Transformers is now on top with $752.5 million, X-Men is second at $731.4 million, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is third at $712.4 million, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is fourth at $705 million, the Edge of Tomorrow is in tenth place at $350.6 million, 300: Rise of an Empire is twelfth with $331.1 million, Snowpiercer is 33rd with $82.9 million, and We Are the Best! has earned $157,000 to be at spot 150. At the end of the month Guardians of the Galaxy opens, which is likely to vault into one of the top earning spots of the year.

BOOM! Announces Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Comic Series

This November BOOM! Studios and Twentieth Century Consumer Products will launch Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, a new comic book limited series based on the new film from 20th Century Fox.

Written by Michael Moreci, the six-issue series bridges the 10-year gap between the Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes films, chronicling the fall of humanity and the rise of Caesar’s ape civilization. Additional creative team details will be revealed at a later date. While the apes of the world have yet to advance as a species, Caesar must find a way to unify them to one cause. On the other side of the country, Malcolm must venture into the decaying Americas with his family to find a cure for the plague slowly killing his wife, Rita.

In addition, BOOM! Studios and Twentieth Century Consumer Products will debut Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: Contagion, a one-shot comic book prequel to the new film, at Comic-Con International in San Diego, California (a.k.a. San Diego Comic-Con), to be held July 24-27, 2014 at the San Diego Convention Center. Written by Caleb Monroe, illustrated by Tom Derenick, and featuring a cover illustrated by Garry Brown, the issue follows the story of Ellie as she struggles to find a cure for the pandemic affecting humanity before it claims her daughter’s life. The issue will retail for $5.00 and will be available for purchase exclusively at San Diego Comic-Con at the BOOM! Studios booth, #2229. The Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: Contagion one-shot marks the first time BOOM! Studios has ever exclusively debuted a brand-new comic at a convention.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes #1 arrives in comic book shops in November with a main cover illustrated by Christopher Mitten for the price of $3.99, and a retailer incentive cover illustrated by Jay Shaw.

BOOM! Studios hosts the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Cast at Wondercon April 19

BOOM! Studios is pleased to announce that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes cast members Andy Serkis, Gary Oldman and Keri Russell, along with film director Matt Reeves, will make an exclusive signing appearance at the BOOM! Studios booth during WonderCon in Anaheim, California, on Saturday, April 19. BOOM! Studios is the official publisher of Planet of the Apes comics.

Limited-edition WonderCon exclusive Dawn of the Planet of the Apes prints illustrated by Garry Brown will be available for purchase for $20, and the cast will be available to sign them from 2:30-3 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, at the BOOM! Studios booth, #319, at the Anaheim Convention Center. The signing will be ticketed and a print purchase is required for the signing.
