Naomi Returns for Second Season of Comics

With a show on The CW on the way, Naomi returns to the pages of her own series to uncover the truth behind the new mysteries around herself and her powers. Featuring the original creative team behind the critically acclaimed and Eisner Award-nominated debut series of Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker, and Jamal Campbell, Naomi Season Two #1 will be available at local comic book stores and digital retailers on March 8, 2022.

Naomi Season Two will look to answer all the questions that surround Naomi, her legacy, and her place in the DC Universe pantheon. Guest-starring Black Adam, Superman, and the Justice League, plus the return of…Zumbado!

Season Two launches straight from Season One and her appearances in Young Justice and Justice League.  Naomi now stands side-by-side with the likes of Superman, Batman, and The Flash, yet at the same time, she still has her small-town life and relationships with her parents and friends to navigate.  

Naomi debuts on The CW on Tuesday, January 11th at 9 p.m.!

Bitter Root #14 Celebrates Juneteenth with a Special Cover

The Eisner and Ringo Award winning series Bitter Root by Chuck Brown, David F. Walker, and Sanford Greene will feature a special commemorative cover in celebration of Juneteenth. This Bitter Root #14 cover will feature new art by Greene and be in stores this June.

Bitter Root is an ongoing comic book series following the Sangerye family, who once were known as the greatest monster hunters of all time and specialized in curing the souls of those infected by hate. But those days are fading. A terrible tragedy has claimed most of the family, leaving the surviving cousins divided between by the desire to cure monsters or to kill them. Now, though, there’s a new breed of monster loose on the streets of Harlem, and the Sangerye family must either come together or watch the human race fall to untold evil. 

The series is being adapted for film with Academy Award winning actress Regina King (director of the DGA Award, NAACP Image Award, and Academy Award nominated One Night in Miami) set to direct and produce.

Regina King to Direct Bitter Root Based on the Comic Series by David F. Walker, Sanford Greene, and Chuck Brown

Bitter Root has found its director in Regina King. The film is based on the comic series created by David F. Walker, Sanford Greene, and Chuck Brown. Published by Image Comics, the film is being released by Legendary.

King will produce along with Reina King via their Royal Ties banner, along with Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian. Walker, Greene, Brown, and Drapetomedia’s Sean Owolo will executive produce.

The film’s draft is currently being rewritten by Bryan Edward Hill.

Set in 1924 during the vibrant Harlem Renaissance, the story focuses on a fracture family of once-great monster hunters. They face an evil that has decended upon New York City. The family must overcome the wounds of their past if they hope to stop an invasion.

The series is well praised receiving nominations for a 2019 Eisner Award for “Best New Series” and 2019 Ringo award for “Best Series”.

Get a First Look at DC and The CW’s Naomi

DC and The CW have released an official image from the anticipated series Naomi. The image is of actress Kaci Walfall as Naomi McDuffie.

Created by Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker, and Jamal Campbell, the series is about Naomi an adopted high school student living in a small town unaware of her history.

The released image is a bit of an homage to the cover of the first issue that introduced the character which you can see below. If given a green light, the series will stay true to the comic series which ran for six issues (so far).

Along with Walfall, Naomi also stars Alexander Wraith as Dee, Cranston Johnson as Zumbado, and Camila Moreno as Lourdes. It’s executive produced by Ava DuVernay, Jill Blankenship, Sarah Bremner, and Paul Garnes, and produced by DuVernay’s Array Filmworks in association with Warner Bros. Television.

The CW Orders a Pilot for Ava DuVernay and DC’s Naomi

When we originally read it, we knew there was something big coming from Naomi. The 2019 comic series written by Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker with art by Jamal Campbell is getting a pilot for The CW by Ava DuVernay. The comic was released by DC Comics under Bendis’ Wonder Comics imprint.

The series follows a young girl with a mysterious history and her journey to being a hero from her small town to the multiverse. It’s a true origin story and one of the best comics of 2019.

The CW series is being written and exec produced by DuVernay and Jill Blankenship. The project will be produced by DuVernay’s Array Filmworks in association with Warner Bros Television, with Sarah Bremner and Paul Garnes also set as EPs.

If the series is picked up, it’d be the first DC drama on the network that’s not produced by Greg Berlanti. The CW has been shifting and figuring out what’s next for DCTV as numerous series wind down or have ended. It was recently announced that Black Lightning will end along with Supergirl after the current season. That leaves The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman, and the upcoming Superman & Lois. Stargirl is also moving to The CW from DC’s digital service.

A spin-off from Black Lightning is also in the works as well as the Greg-Berlanti produced Wonder Girl, both are DC properties. The pilots announced by the CW doesn’t mean these projects aren’t going forward, there may be “room for more”.

DuVernay is also working on the DC/Vertigo series DMZ which will air on HBO Max.

The Old Guard Recruits a New Army in the Tales Through Time Anthology

The bestselling series The Old Guard by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández will build upon its immortal universe with an anthology story arc in The Old Guard: Tales Through Time. The six-issue chapter begins on the heels of the top-ranking Netflix Original film adaptation’s success and will launch from Image Comics this April and feature an exciting lineup of talent.

Meanwhile, Nicolo “Nicky” di Genova and Yusuf “Joe” al-Kaysani, lovers since they tried (and failed) to kill each other in the First Crusade, spend an evening at Berlin’s famed Eldorado nightclub in the twilight era of 1932, sharing drinks with drag queens and fistfighting Nazis in an all-new story by writer Andrew Wheeler (Another Castle: Grimoire) and Jacopo Camagni (Nomen Omen)!
