Small Press Expo Announces the 2015 Ignatz Award Nominees

2015 Ignatz AwardThe Small Press Expo (SPX), the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comics, graphic novels and alternative political cartoons, has announced the 2015 nominees for the annual presentation of the Ignatz Awards, a celebration of outstanding achievement in comics and cartooning.

The Ignatz, named after George Herriman’s brick-wielding mouse from his long running comic strip Krazy Kat, recognizes exceptional work that challenges popular notions of what comics can achieve, both as an art form and as a means of personal expression. The Ignatz Awards are a festival prize, the first of such in the United States comic book industry.

The nominees for the ballot were determined by a panel of five of the best of today’s comic artists, Lamar Abrams, Cara Bean, Robyn Chapman, Sophie Goldstein and Corrine Mucha, with the votes cast for the awards by the attendees during SPX. The Ignatz Awards will be presented at the gala Ignatz Awards ceremony held on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at 9:30 P.M.

SPX 2013: Programming Announced

The Small Press Expo over the weekend announced the SPX 2013 Programming Schedule.  SPX is proud to continue its established tradition of rich, thought-provoking programming featuring leading comics artists and critics in conversation. As in previous years, the Programming Schedule will feature two simultaneous tracks on both Saturday and Sunday, September 14th and 15th.

SPX 2013 programming highlights include special Q&A sessions with headline guests Seth, Jeff Smith, Gary Panter, Rutu Modan, The New Yorker’s Liza Donnelly and Argentinian cartoonist Liniers, many of whom will also join in several other panel discussions.

Highlights of this year’s panel discussions will include:

  • Living civil rights legend Rep. John Lewis, along with co-author Andrew Aydin and artist Nate Powell will discuss the first volume of Rep. Lewis trilogy, March!, about the civil rights movement of the 1960’s.
  • Conversations between Dash Shaw and Frank Santoro, Raina Telgemeier and Gene Yang, as well as Sam Henderson and Michael Kupperman.
  • What Makes Drawings Funny? with Peter Bagge, Lisa Hanawalt and Jay Lynch, moderated by Dustin Harbin.
  • In Kids/Not For Kids, Jeff Smith, Roger Langridge, Rutu Modan and Liniers will discuss how creators deal with producing works for the very different adult and children’s audiences.
  • A discussion about funding comics projects.
  • Our annual hands-on comics workshop will led this year by Alec Longstreth from the Center for Cartoon Studies and Josh Bayer from the Sequential Artists Workshop.

This year is the eighth year that SPX programming has been organized by Programming Coordinator Bill Kartalopoulos. Bill is a comics educator, critic and curator who has taught classes about comics at Parsons The New School for Design. Bill will be the editor for the 2014 installment of the critically acclaimed series, Best American Comics. He is the publisher and editor of Rebus Books, as well as being a Contributing Editor for Print Magazine.

Programming on Saturday will run from 11:30AM  until 7PM and Sunday programming will run from 12:30PM until 6PM.

Small Press Expo is pleased to announce Dash Shaw, Frank Cammuso and Jay Lynch as featured guests to SPX 2013, to be held September 14 and 15. Dash, Frank and Jay will join previously announced guests Seth, Lisa Hanawalt, Gary Panter, Frank Santoro, Gene Yang, Congressman John Lewis, Rutu Modan, Michael Kupperman, Liza Donnelly and Liniers.

One of the great experimenters with the use of story, line and color in indie comics, Dash Shaw will be at SPX to sign his latest book from Fantagraphics, New School, as well as his latest comic, 3 New Stories. Long time SPXer and creator behind the kid’s series The Knights of the Lunch Table, Frank Cammuso, has collaborated with famed underground cartoonist and creator of Nard N’ Pat Jay Lynch on the children’s book Otto’s Backwards Day. Their book is being published by children’s book publisher Toon Books, which will make its first appearance in the SPX exhibitor room at this year’s show. Fantagraphics to Release Two New Dash Shaw Books

Fantagraphics Books has acquired the new graphic novel, New School, from acclaimed cartoonist Dash Shaw, who previously created the graphic novels Bottomless Belly Button and Bodyworld.

To be published in April 2013, New School is an all-new, 340 page work of fiction that was loosely inspired by Shaw’s experience as a teenaged foreign exchange student. “New School is my most personal book. It’s all true (sort of). I dramatized and changed things to make everything closer to how it felt. The book took years of difficult work to make. Now I can’t wait to hold it in my hands!” says Shaw.

New School stars a likeably earnest if naive young man, Danny, who was raised on ’90s pop culture like Jurassic Park and X-Men. Danny’s story starts when his brother Luke fails to return from a trip to a remote island where he was hired to teach English to the employees of a new amusement park called ClockWorld. Built by wealthy industrialists but staffed by island natives, ClockWorld is an ambitious theme park that recreates historical events from throughout history.

Danny is given the charge of bringing his brother home, and is initially overwhelmed by his new and exotic surroundings. His initial infatuation quickly shifts to disillusionment, and his sense of “being different” grows to alienation, especially after he discovers that Luke has made a new life, new family, and even a new personality for himself on ClockWorld. How Danny and Luke’s relationship resolves is the heart of New School. New School is at once funny and deadly serious, naturalistic and fantastic, easily readable while wildly artistic, personal and political, familiar and completely new.

Additionally, Fantagraphics will also publish in April an all-new comic book by Shaw titled 3 New Stories. This stand-alone work will feature three all-new, full-color short stories that explore varied dystopian societies. From a Sherlock Holmes-style investigator who must complete his high school degree to filmed “voluntary” nudity to prison camps full of jaded children, Shaw pens each story with his signature style and unique spin, all in 32 pages.

Currently Shaw is working on a feature-length animation called Shell Game, complete with his complex live-painting style and poetic sensibilities. He recently directed an animated music video for Sigur Rós, which is now available to watch online.
