Review – Dynamite’s Damsels #4 and Flash Gordon: Zeitgeist #8

Damsels #4

Damsels Cover #4I’ve enjoyed Dynamite’s Damsels series. It’s a nice new take on the recently popular spinning of fairy tales. In this case a mystery where it’s clear not everyone is who they say they are and the why’s and how’s are still being figured out. This isn’t your regular Cinderalla, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid and Snow White story.

As the twin armies of Perrault and Caumont thunder across the plains, Rapa and Heinrich search for clues to the true identity of Queen Talia in Perrault castle but soon find themselves fighting for their lives. Meanwhile in Villeneuve Queen Belle tries to reason with her husband, the king, as her subjects take matters into their own hands.

There’s some great humor in this comic, the idea of these people always being cursed or how they dealt with the Djinn. Plus there’s the action and the scheming between the Queens. It’s all adding up to an interesting comic. It’s not the best of the twisted tales, but it’s a worthy addition to what’s out there. How it differs and stands out is a part of the attraction to it. If you enjoy a comic with female leads that twists up traditional fairy tales, you should definitely check this one out.

Flash Gordon: Zeitgeist #8

FlashZeitgeist8

I’m a fan of Flash Gordon. The original strips, the campy 80s movie and this series from Dynamite. The first story arc took the Flash Gordon story we were all familiar with, and also we got to see what was going on on Earth the entire time too. While that second story arc was a bit weaker, it answered a question I always had. But, the first arc ended and now we get to see what happens next.

While exploring the subterranean labyrinths beneath the Imperial Palace of Mongo, Dr. Hans Zarkov-brilliant scientist and engineer-finds himself trapped in his own past, courtesy of an insidious trap left behind by Ming the Merciless. Is even Zarkov’s genius enough to free himself from this deadly snare?

The comic is basically an origina story for Zarkov. We learn more about his history, his motivations and we move the story forward. Ming is deposed and captured, and now Mongo has to deal with the power vacuum. Actually Flash really has to deal with the power vacuum and he’s learning that it’s not easy. On top of that the bridge to Earth is destroyed and Zarkov is on a mission to fix that.

The series picks up with the story, allowing us to see what happens after Ming is defeated. While the first arc was  bit rushed, it’ll be interesting to see how long this plays out. The war has been won, and now it’s time to rebuild. In our modern times, it’s an interesting reflection of the real world. We’ll see how far it’s taken. It could be great, it could be crash and burn, but this first step is solid.

Review – Dynamite’s Damsels #2, Dark Shadows #8, Evil Ernie #1, Voltron: Year One #5

Damsels #2

Damsels is an interesting series focusing on the female characters in the fairy tales we all grew up with. Mixing and mashing those stories is a popular thing right now, with about a half dozen different comic book series attempting to put their own spin and stand out. Damsels, has some interesting scheming and mystery surrounding it, enough that could keep me around for a while.

From the tales of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, the Little Mermaid and Snow White… In Caumont Castle, King Persine and Queen Rapunzel are still reeling from the discovery of a mysterious spy in their midst. The loyal subjects of Caumont must be made aware of the sinister magical threat before it’s too late! Meanwhile, having made her escape from Caumont via the River Esk, Rapa is still struggling to make sense of her situation. Can she really trust the amphibian girl who saved her life, or is she even more confused than Rapa herself?

The second issue is still setting it all up and we’re still figuring out all the players and exactly what the plot is of the comic. It’s a slow reveal that’ll keep me around for at least the first story arc.

Dark Shadows #8

Barnabas the hunted! What does he have to do with the mysterious deaths of multiple children in a nearby town? Could it be true that Barnabas is to blame? He doesn’t know for sure but he has vowed to get to the bottom of it. With Barnabas’ recent memory problems and need to fulfill his blood lust he fears the worst.

Dynamite’s Dark Shadows is still evoking a lot of the feel from the little of the television show that I’ve seen. The style and story telling is interesting. I think overall, I’d like to see more family interaction, as the first arcs tend to be mystery of the week, which might get old after a while.

Eight issues in, and I feel like I’m still learning who these characters are. Not a bad series, but I think it’s really made for diehard fans of the television series.

Evil Ernie #1

Ernest Fairchild was a kind and gentle soul…until one day something in him snapped, leading him to one of the most notorious killing sprees in American history. With 665 kills to his name, “Evil Ernie” requires ONE more murder to complete the ritual he started and seal his deal with the Devil. Problem is: he’s just been EXECUTED! What led an ordinary boy to become a leather-clad angel of death? How does he wield such blasphemous power? And what is the secret behind his hideous smiley-face button? This October, you may hate the sin, but you’ll LOVE the SINNER!

Evil Ernie gets a relaunch… and yeah. I never read an Evil Ernie comic. I have a lot of friends who are huge fans, so I know “of” the character, but that’s about it. The first issue was interesting and an origin story. This is a classic comic, and while it’s not a full story in this issue, you could read it and walk away and get a sense of who this character is. Yes, you read that right, we’re not talking a five issue origin story. It’s all here.

The character itself, not sure if he’s my form of entertainment, but the comic was absolutely interesting. Enough so that I want to check out the second issue and see where Snider takes it.

Voltron: Year One #5

The origin of the Voltron team continues. The traitor has been revealed, and #686 finally has the smoking gun necessary to bring him down once and for all. Only one problem though—central command has been infiltrated by zombie robots, and they’re promising to execute a “flesh sack” every ten minutes until their demands are met. And cut off from the rest of his team, Commander Sven has no choice but to form an alliance with the same man he’s sworn to expose at all costs. Finally face-to-face with his enemy, yet on the run from ones even more dangerous, what Sven does next changes everything. “Fearless Leader” goes penultimate, and this is where the future becomes set in stone…

I vaguely remember Voltron when I was a kid, but this series is just a great addition to the regular ongoing series. It adds history that we don’t have to sit through in that series and it’s done in a way that’s interesting and entertaining.

The bad guys in this issue, I shrug my shoulders at. I don’t remember if they were in the cartoon, so my opinions might be due to that. The action itself kind of came out of nowhere too. But, overall the idea of the team figuring out this grand conspiracy has been really entertaining.

The day began badly and has gone rapidly and literally downhill ever since. A series of peculiar and baffling encounters throw obstacle after obstacle into her path, intent it seems on preventing her progress. The thing is, until today she had no idea she was trying to make any progress, toward anything! A collection of hazy memories and bewildering tattoos are all she has to help her figure it all out, and to be honest, she’d just as soon not bother.  Around her, we see the mountain city of Caumont thrown into overdrive by the arrival of Queen Talia and King Aurore of Perrault. The streets are thronged with cheering people, does it matter they aren’t exactly sure why they are cheering, or for whom?

Pick of the Week – Ride: Southern Gothic #1

12-Gauge Comics is a publisher you probably haven’t heard of, and chances are you’re not reading their comics. Well, hopefully you’ll take a chance this week with the first of their two issue anthology, Ride: Southern Gothic #1. The pulp comic has tons of talent including Rick LeonardiDavid LaphamRon MarzNathan EdmondsonPaul Azaceta and more. Every series by this publisher that I’ve read has been solid. So, do yourself a favor and sit down and give this comic a chance.

  • Ride: Southern Gothic #1 – see above
  • Thief of Thieves #8 – Robert Kirkman and Nick Spencer’s series has been amazing and the fact there’s grumblings this will be the next television show from Kirkman just shows you need top hop on now, before everyone else finds out about it.
  • Damsels #1 – Dynamite does tough women, and this series gathers them together into one kick-ass series.
  • Transformers: Robots in Disguise #8 – IDW’s Transformers line of comics is amazing and this series is one of the prime examples. If you were a fan of the cartoon, definitely grab these comics.
  • Archer & Armstrong #2 – This is my favorite of Valiant’s relaunch. The first issue was filled with conspiracies and the interaction between the title characters was priceless. There’s more than enough mystery in the first issue to get me to come back for the second.
