Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in! Below are ten suggestions of comics, graphic novels, or trade paperbacks you should spend some extra time checking out and think about picking up.

Pick of the Week: Bitch Planet #1 (Image Comics) – The highly anticipated women in- prison sci-fi exploitation riff. Think Margaret Atwood meets Inglourious. There’s lots of buzz, and some good word of mouth leading up to this first issue, and I’m happy to say, it lives up to the hype.

Afterlife With Archie #7 (Archie Comics) – It’s been too long since the last issue! One of the best series of the year.

Batgirl #37 (DC Comics) – A change in design, a change in direction, a change in attitude, a whole new series that’s not too late to check out and see what the buzz is about!

Copperhead #4 (Image Comics) – An awesome space western. A comic that’s under the radar, and so good.

Eternal #1 (BOOM! Studios) – If death wasn’t an obstacle, how would that change life? Clones toss things in the air, and this series explores the aftermath. The first issue is not what we expected, and a solid debut.

Lola XOXO #5 (Aspen Comics) – It’s too long between issues! Such a beautiful comic to look at, and the apocalyptic world is a fascinating one to explore. It’s a great comic, that’d also be a fantastic game too!

Southern Bastards #6 (Image Comics) – One of the top comic series of the year. Southern noir at its best.

Southern Dog #4 (Action Lab Entertainment) – A comic dealing with racism in the south? Yes please. Plus werewolves.

Spider-Man and the X-Men #1 (Marvel) – Guess who’s taking over? Well, this should be interesting.

The Valiant #1 (Valiant Entertainment) – Valiant puts out one of the best comic superhero universes out there. This new limited series kicks of their Valiant Next initiative, and is a perfect starting place for folks to check out what they’ve been missing. Hop on the bandwagon now, before it’s too late!

Sell-Outs and New Printing Roundup

Here’s this week’s announced sell-outs and new printings.

Image Comics

Skybound‘s Birthright #1 by Joshua Williamson and Andrei Bressan has sold out and will return November 5, the same day as the second issue.

Copperhead #2 by Jay Faerber and Scott Godlewski has sold out and will return for a new printing on November 5, the same day as the third issue.

The Fade Out #2 by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips has sold out. It’ll return November 5, the same day as the third issue.

It should be no surprise, but Scott Snyder and Jock‘s Wytches #1 has sold out at the distributor level. A second printing is in the works, and it’ll hit shelves on November 12, the same day as the second issue.

Sell-Outs and New Printing Roundup

Check out the sell-outs and new printings announced this week.

BOOM! Studios

Hexed #1 from writer Michael Alan Nelson and artist Dan Mora has sold out at the distributor level. The second printing ships October 1 with a new cover by Mora.

Dark Horse

Prometheus: Fire and Stone #1 has sold out of its first printing. Writer Paul Tobin and artist Juan Ferreyra‘s first issue will return for a second printing on October 8.

Copperhead #1, by writer Jay Faerber, artist Scott Godlewski, colorist Ron Riley, and letterer/designer Thomas Mauer is getting a second printing. The issue will return on October 8.

Ryan Browne‘s God Hates Astronauts #1 has sold out at the distributor level. The second printing will hit shelves on October 8.

Marvel

Marvel has announced that Dark Tower: Drawing of the Three – The Prisoner #1 has sold out at the distributor level and will return for a second printing. The comic by writers Peter David and Robin Furth with art by Piotr Kowalski returns to shelves October 8.

Valiant

It should be no surprise that The Delinquents #1 from writers James Asmus and Fred Van Lente and artist Kano has sold out at the distributor level. The second printing will be on sale October 1. The cover is by Paolo Rivera.

Pick of the Week: The Bunker #6 (Oni Press) – He came from the future to save the world, but, is the only way to save it to destroy it? Young and Old Grady meet, and the fate of the world hangs in the balance. Joshua Hale Fialkov and Joe Infurnari’s series will be at the top of numerous “best of” lists when this year is up.

Archer & Armstrong #24 (Valiant) – Valiant has the best universe out there, and what they’ve put together has been amazing, what a cohesive comic universe should be. Archer & Armstrong is an awesome example of their series, mixing humor and action with every issue.

Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers #2 (Dynamite) – Joe Casey and Nathan Fox are continuing their run on one of Jack Kirby‘s greatest creations, Captain Victory! The first issue exceeded my expectations, to the point we wanted to see what happened next. Bring on issue two!

Copperhead #1 (Image) – Westerns are a genre that are hit and miss in comics (and in general). This new series mixes in some sci-fi, in an extra long first issue for the regular price.

Death of Wolverine #2 (Marvel) – The first issue blew us away. Our cynicism was prepared for a cash in, but the writing of Charles Soule and art of Steve McNiven is an amazing combo for this fitting send-off.

Edge of Spider-Verse #1 (Marvel) – A Spider-Man centric event brings together wall crawlers from around the multiverse to deal with a killer who is hunting them down.

Prometheus: Fire and Stone #1 (Dark Horse) – Dark Horse is relaunching the Alien/Predator/Prometheus universe in comics. This series promises to bridge the cap between Prometheus and Alien, and hopefully right some of the wrongs from the movie. No matter, we want more Alien!

Stumptown Vol. 3 #1 (Oni Press) – Greg Rucka‘s fan favorite private eye is back, and now it’s an ongoing series! If you haven’t read the first two volumes of the series, you’re still good to pick up this one. The detective Dex has to get to the bottom of some violence before a heated rivalry transforms into war.

Wild’s End #1 (BOOM! Studios) – When a rural English community of the 1930s is the victim of an alien invasion, the residents’ lives are upended by the harsh realities of life-and-death violence. Led by the town’s outsider and retired war veteran, they will have to rally together to uncover the secret of their invaders and ultimately fight back. Writer Dan Abnett does War of the Worlds!

The Walking Dead #131 (Skybound/Image) – Did you read the last issue!? That ending alone is the reason this issue winds up on the list. What the hell is going to happen next?
