Apes Rule the Box Office Again. Transformers Rule Globally.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes remained in the top spot at the box office. The film earned an additional $36 million, only a 50 percent drop from the previous week’s debut, which isn’t bad since other sequels this summer have seen a much sharper decline.
In other geek movie news… Transformers: Age of Extinction was fifth this past weekend, and to date, the film has earned $227.2 million. The film has a chance to challenge for the top spot as far as domestic grosses.
Domestically, the top comic related films of the summer are Captain America: The Winter Soldier, still holding strong with $258.4 million, X-Men: Days of Future Past is in third at $230.5 million. Transformers is fourth. The Amazing Spider-Man 2, is at $201.6 million for sixth. 300: Rise of An Empire is at 17 with $106.6 million, and Edge of Tomorrow has earned $96.6 million. Snowpiercer is at $3.5 million.
Globally, thinks are a bit different. Transformers: Age of Extinction tops things globally with $886.3 million earned. X-Men is second at $736.3 million. Cap is third at $712.7 million. Edge of Tomorrow has earned $357.9 million. 300: Rise of An Empire has earned $331.1 million. Snowpiercer has earned $83.7 million.
Transformers 4 Remains On Top of the Box Office
According to reports, the Fourth of July weekend was weak at the box office. Without any blockbuster competition,Transformers: Age of Extinction remained at the top of the box office with an estimated $36.4 million. That has the film dropping 64% from the previous weekend and in two weeks it has racked up a domestic total of $714.7 million. Overseas the film has topped $400 million already.
As far as other “comic book” movies Edge of Tomorrow, which is based on the Japanese light novel/manga series All You Need Is Kill, fell to #10 in its fifth weekend. The film added $3.6 million which brings its domestic total to $90.9 million. The film has earned $248.6 million overseas.
Snowpiercer is one of the summer’s best-reviewed action films, around 93% positive on Rotten Tomatoes. The film, based on a French graphic novel, expanded from 8 to 250 theaters. The film earned just under $1 million.
X-Men: Days of Future Past was in 13th and earned $1.84 million which brings its domestic total to $227.1 million. Captain America: The Winter Soldier earned $338,000 and brought its domestic total to $257.8 million. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 finally fell off the charts.
When it comes to 2014, domestically, Cap remains in 1st place, Days of Future Past in third, and Spidey is fifth. Globally Days of Future Past is in first with $724.7 million, The Winter Soldier is second at $711.8 million, and Spider-Man 2 is third at $704.2 million.
Transformers: Age of Extinction Tops the Box Office
As expected, Transformers: Age of Extinction topped the box office, bringing in an estimated $100 million in North America, with a $41.6 million opening day. What’s amazing is, the film has also done amazing overseas bringing in around $90 million in China over its first three days. That’s a record for that market, and the film’s final act was set in the country with a high profile Chinese actress in it as well. The film also earned $111.3 million from other foreign markets. That puts it at $301.3 million for the opening weekend. Transformers: Age of Extinction cost an estimated $325 million.
The movie received an A- CinemaScore, and %17 on Rotten Tomatoes, showing off the polarizing reviews.
Not shockingly the film was mostly male, 64%, and older with 57% over 35. Only 27% of the crowd was under the age of 18.
On the other comic book movie front, Edge of Tomorrow has now earned $84.1 million in North America.
X-Men: Days of Future Past wound up in ninth place after its sixth weekend. The film has earned $233.4 million domestically.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 crossed the $200 million mark domestically, with a global total of $703 million.
When it comes to the 2014 rank, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is sitting at the top domestically $257.2 million, Days of Future Past is in third with $223.4 million, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is in fifth at $200.2 million.
Globally, things are a bit different. Days of Future Past is sitting on top globally at $712.7 million, The Winter Soldier is second at $711.2 million, and Spider-Man 2 is third at $703.7 million.
Comics at the Box Office
While there wasn’t any new “comic” based movies debuting this past weekend, there were still quite a few in the theaters. Tom Cruise’s Edge of Tomorrow is still doing decent at the box office, dropping 37.4% in its third weekend and earned $10.3 million. Domestically the film has earned $74.5 million, and will wind up somewhere around $100 million when its domestic run ends. Internationally the film added $21.5 million to bring its international total to $218.3 million. Japan has yet to open, so internationally the film should wind up around $300 million.
X-Men: Days of Future Past is still going strong in its fifth week. It earned $6.2 million domestically and is up to $216.8 million. Globally the film has earned $692 million.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is still in theaters and earned $600,000 for $199.5 million domestically. Globally, the film is at $702.8 million.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier earned $197,000 and globally it has earned $710.7 million. The film is the top earner globally this year and tied with The Lego Movie to be the top earner domestically.
The top earning films so far this year are movies based on comic books. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is on top but The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is going to be close, and might top the film. X-Men: Days of Future Past is right now in third and doing well, so we’ll see where it ends up.
This coming week sees the opening of Transformers: Age of Extinction, and Snowpiercer, based on the graphic novel.
Edge of Tomorrow, Days of Future Past, Spider-Man & Cap’s Weekend Box Office
There were some high profile sequels debuting at the box office this past weekend, so it’s not a surprise they topped the box office. But, there were still quite a few “comic” movies in the theaters.
Edge of Tomorrow, based on the book All You Need is Kill (which is also a graphic novel) dropped 43.8% from it’s debut week. It earned $16.2 million, and so far has earned $56.6 million domestically. Overseas the film has earned $237 million. The film came in fourth for the week.
X-Men: Days of Future Past is in its fourth week, and came in sixth place. The film earned $9.5 million had has earned a total of $205.9 million domestically and $455.8 overseas. It’s now the top earning moving of the summer so far. Domestically it ranks third for “X” films, and fourth adjusted for inflation, though has a good chance of moving up some spots.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is in its seventh week and is now in 12th place domestically. It has earned a total $198.4 million domestically. The total is disappointing compared to previous Spidey films.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is close to being the top movie domestically of 2014. The Lego Movie currently has the top spot. Globally, Cap is in the lead with Spidey about $10 million behind. In fact Cap, Spidey, and DOFP make up the top three films so far in 2014 globally.
