LOS ANGELES – Kids love comic books, and comic books love kids! A new renaissance of all-ages comic books has energized young readers like never before. To celebrate, a group of comic book creators in Los Angeles have teamed up to host Kids Comics L.A. – a unique (and free!) one-day event on Dec. 4 at Meltdown Comics in Hollywood to spotlight kids comics and engage a new generation of future comic creators!

At Kids Comics L.A., kids will meet and interact with comic creators and learn how to make their own comic books! Writers and artists of kid-friendly comic books starring familiar characters will be in attendance to sign books and talk about comics with fans. Two unique comic seminars will help budding creators understand the basics of making their own comics, with one session focused on creating characters and one focused on comic book storytelling. These interactive seminars are open to everyone attending the event and families are encouraged to learn together!

The creators participating in Kids Comics L.A. include Sam Humphries (Fraggle Rock, Archaia Comics), Ian Brill (Darkwing Duck and Rescue Rangers, BOOM! Kids Comics), Dave Server and Jackson Lansing (Penguins of Madagascar, Ape Entertainment), and Chris and Shane Houghton (Reed Gunther, Independent).

Superman, Wolverine, Spider-Man and the Hulk can return to menace tourists on the crowded Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles.  A judge blocked the Keane Act which had outlawed the performers.

Judge Dean Peterson wrote:

It may not seem like a traditional form of free speech, but their right to perform is protected under that provision of the U.S. Constitution.

The Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce wasn’t happy with the ruling.  It’s President Leron Gubler said the Hollywood Blvd. characters are a menace to tourists, sometimes refusing to allow visitors to pass by the famous Grauman’s Chinese Theatre without a toll in the form of a photograph and gratuity.

The people who make a living this way was covered in a documentary, Confessions of a Superhero.  You can check out the trailer to that below.

(www.topcow.com), a Los Angeles-based entertainment company, was founded in December of 1992 by artist Marc Silvestri, who also co-founded Image Comics earlier that same year. Top Cow currently publishes its line of comic books in 21 languages in over 55 different countries. The company has launched 20 franchises (18 original and two licensed) in the industry’s Top 10, seven at #1, a feat accomplished by no other publisher in the last two decades. WANTED, an Eisner-nominated miniseries published by Top Cow from 2003-2005, is now a major motion picture from Universal Pictures starring Angelina Jolie, James McAvoy and Morgan Freeman. Virtually all of Top Cow’s other properties are in development as feature films, live-action television, animation or video games. Top Cow has also successfully licensed and merchandised its franchises into toys, statues, clothing, lithographs, puppets, posters, magnets, shot glasses, lighters, lunch pails, wall scrolls, mouse pads, die-cast cars, calendars, Christmas ornaments, Halloween masks, trading cards, standees, video games and roleplaying games.

Top Cow Invites You To A Discussion and Signing of Rest and Berserker with Milo Ventimiglia

Official Press Release

TOP COW INVITES YOU TO A DISCUSSION AND SIGNING OF REST AND BERSERKER WITH MILO VENTIMIGLIA

LOS ANGELES, Calif., October 25, 2010 – Top Cow Productions, Inc. proudly announced today that DiVide Pictures’ Milo Ventimiglia (Heroes) will be doing an in-store signing for, as well as discuss, Rest and Berserker at Borders in Southern California on Wednesday, October 27 at 7pm.

Rest tells the story of John Barrett, a man in his late 20’s, whose life is going nowhere.  He is stuck in a dead-end job with no friends and no future.  When his best friend from college mysteriously resurfaces with news of a new wonder drug that replaces sleep, John falls into a conspiracy that threatens to change the course of human history.  Written by Mark Powers (GI Joe) with art by Shawn McManus (Sandman) and Marco Castiello (Witchblade).

Berserker centers on Aaron and Farris, two young and completely different men who discover an animalistic and uncontrollable rage living inside them.  Meanwhile, two mysterious organizations seek them out for their newfound strength and power for their own purposes.  But what good is strength and power when you can’t tell friend from foe?  From screenwriter Rick Loverd and artist Jeremy Haun (Chuck, Detective Comics) comes a raw, blood series in the spirit of Wanted!

Borders is located at 3700 Torrance Blvd, Torrance, CA 90503. There is no charge for the signing and Borders will have copies of both Rest and Berserker softcovers on hand for sale during the event.

On April 26, 2010, the Supreme Court granted the state of California‘s petition for certiorari (cert) in Schwarzenegger v. EMA , the so-called “violent video game” case.  This will be the first time that the Supreme Court has agreed to hear arguments on any of the state laws attempting to restrict or ban certain video games. Until now, all such laws have been struck down by lower federal courts as unconstitutional restrictions on Free Speech protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution.

The Court will hear oral arguments on November 2, 2010. At that time, the Court will also review all friends of the Court briefs (amicus briefs) that will put forth additional information for the Court to consider. The Entertainment Consumers Association will be submitting such a brief on behalf of American digital entertainment consumers and will be attaching the gamer petition.
