NYCC 2012 – New Comic Book Distributor Comic Flea Market Debuts

The new comic book distribution company Comic Flea Market will be displaying at the New York Comic Con this week at booth #2374.

This will be a strategic move to better position publishers to take advantage of the quickly expanding digital marketplace and new market economic realities in print comic books.  CFM will also be distributing graphic novels, trading cards, posters and e-books.

The new distribution company will be displaying samples, offering show-specific coupons, as well as looking for new partners at the convention.

One of the key differentiators is CFM’s ability to print to order. As a business model, this suits clients in terms of removing the requirements to overprint certain titles and deal with a costly administrative bureaucracy.

Comic Flea Market will also be working with comic book stores in developing a comparable discount to Diamond Distributors.

Dark Horse has announced that Scott Allie has been promoted to editor in chief. Allie celebrated his eighteenth year with the company last month. He made his mark at Dark Horse quickly when he began editing Mike Mignola’s Hellboy only a month after joining the Editorial department. He has shepherded multiple projects with names outside the comics industry, such as Lance Henriksen with To Hell You Ride and Gerard Way with The Umbrella Academy. Along with Dark Horse’s director of public relations, Jeremy Atkins, and recently appointed VP of Marketing, Matt Parkinson, Allie helped to develop and edit the company’s first foray into digital publishing with the critically acclaimed anthology MySpace Dark Horse Presents. Action Lab Names Kevin Freeman New President of Action Lab Entertainment

Effective October 1, 2012, Kevin Freeman has been named the new President of Action Lab Entertainment.  He replaces Shawn Pryor, who has served as President since the publisher’s inception in 2010.

Pryor will remain an integral part of the Action Lab team.  He will focus his efforts on building the digital side of comic production and serve as the primary contact to ComiXology, Comics Plus, Graphic.ly, and other digital outlets for Action Lab’s wide range of titles.  He’ll also serve as Action Lab’s web admin and be a facilitator for special projects.

In the almost two years that Pryor served as president, Action Lab went from a small unknown publisher to an award-nominated, and award winning, company.

“An administrative shift was needed to ensure that the future of Action Lab was maintained as it continues to grow,” explained Pryor.  “As we expand, our staff needs to expand as well.  We need to be able to spread out responsibilities, and that’s where Freeman comes in.  Now is the time to let someone else take the company further.”

Freeman brings with him a myriad of editorial and administrative experience, having served as the Managing Editor for comics publisher Ape Entertainment from 2005 to 2012.  He also served as interim Editor-in-Chief at Ape in 2009.  He joined the Action Lab team as Managing Editor in June 2012.

“I’m really excited to serve as Action Lab’s new president, and humbled that they are giving me this opportunity,” said Freeman.  “The upside of this company is limitless.  Given our early success, our recent acquisition of the Vamplets license, and a number of other huge projects that we can’t talk about yet, Action Lab is going to be on the publishing map for years to come.  We are doing amazing work here.”

Action Lab received two Eisner nominations in 2012 for its critically-acclaimed all-ages comic Princeless, and has been praised for its diverse library of titles, including Double Jumpers, Fracture, and The Order of Dagonet.

In his new role, LeHeup will contribute to Valiant’s newly relaunched stable of ongoing titles, including X-O Manowar, Harbinger, Bloodshot, and Archer & Armstrong. LeHeup is the latest addition to Valiant’s growing editorial team, joining Assistant Editor Josh Johns and Executive Editor Warren Simons.

“When we began our search for a new Associate Editor, Jody’s name was at the top of my list,” said Simons. “I had the opportunity to share an office with Jody at Marvel, and I saw firsthand how dedicated he was to creating amazing, innovative stories. He has a tremendous love for our medium, and I know he’ll be an exceptional addition to our hardworking team at Valiant.”

A four-year veteran of Marvel editorial, LeHeup edited a host of bestselling and critically lauded titles during his tenure, including Uncanny X-Force, Age of Apocalypse, Deadpool, and X-Factor, while his work on the acclaimed anthology Strange Tales garnered him a Harvey Award nomination in 2011.

ONI Press Announces Changes In Its Sales and Marketing Team

ONI PRESS ANNOUNCES CHANGES IN ITS SALES & MARKETING TEAM

It is with both optimism and sadness that Oni Press announces the departure of a longtime employee and the addition of two new members to its sales and marketing team.

Thomas Shimmin and Amber LaPraim are taking joint positions as Marketing Coordinator, while the current Director of Marketing, Cory Casoni, is leaving Oni Press to consult for NAMCO BANDAI Games, Inc. as the Head of Marketing for ShiftyLook.

Casoni joined Oni Press in 2008. Prior to becoming part of the company he had been manufacturing T-shirts for Oni Press, including the well-known Scott Pilgrim limited edition shirts. Casoni was the first hire in a series that led to the current complement of employees now at Oni Press.

“Transitions are always a little difficult, and always a little bittersweet,” Oni Press publisher Joe Nozemack said. “We hate to lose any of our valued workforce, but at the same time, we can’t begrudge Cory for accepting a great opportunity when presented. He’s got a passion for gaming and comics, and this new job combines both. In his time with us, Cory has been integral to growing Oni Press’ presence in the existing marketplace and finding us new markets to sell our comics. Under his guidance, we have successfully launched some of our best-selling titles, including The Sixth Gun and the award-winning graphic novels One Soul and Petrograd. He was also at the marketing helm during the height of Scott Pilgrim mania. We couldn’t have weathered that without him.”

Both Shimmin and LaPraim joined the Oni Press Marketing Department earlier this year. Shimmin has been working with Casoni interfacing with direct market comic retailers, including a concentrated push for Brian Churilla’s buzz book The Secret History of D.B. Cooper. LaPraim has been operating as Oni Press’ logistics coordinator and organizing convention appearances, including recent stops at the Emerald City Comic Con, Stumptown Comics Fest, and Los Angeles Times Festival of Books.

“Having the staff already on board makes the switchover all the easier,” said Oni Press editor in chief James Lucas Jones. “Tom and Amber are more than ready to step into this position and we’re excited to have them on full time.”

Founded in 1997, Oni Press, Inc. has become one of the comic industry’s most well respected independent comic publishers; focusing on genre, character, and story driven creator-owned work.
