Spider-man Turn Off the DarkIt was a bright spot for the troubled Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, but it topped Wicked as the highest-grossing show on Broadway show last week.  Spider ko’ed the show by $58.  The show grossed $1,588,514 compared to Wicked‘s $1,588,456.

The theater Spider-Man is running has 1,930 seats compared to Wicked’s 1,809 and due to it’s long running status Wicked has much better experience on how to get top dollar for it’s fewer seats.

Spider-man Turn Off the DarkNatalie Mendoza, who suffered a concussion during the first preview performance, will be leaving the Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.  Rumors are circulating an exit agreement is being worked on between the actress, her representatives and representatives of the musical.

Mendoza plays Arachne and her last performance was December 20.  She’s on vocal rest prescribed by her doctors.  It is also reported she’s shaken by the injury of her friend and fellow actor Christopher Tierney.

Arachne is a new character created for the performance and much of the second act revolves around the character.  The character sings the title song and on five other songs.

This was Mendoza’s Broadway debut.  She was best known for a role in the movie The Descent.

The musical grossed $944,138 for its four shows and played to 100 percent capacity for the week of December 26.  That figure doesn’t include any refunds for canceled performances.

Spider-Man Actor “Fortunate”

Spider-man Turn Off the DarkChristopher Tierney is lucky.  Tierney was the actor who was injured during a performance of the Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.  Timothy Tierney, the actor’s father, spoke to the New York Times Beat about the accident and injury calling him “fortunate.”

According to his father, Tierney was falling head first, but was able to turn his body mid-fall preventing his falling directly on his head.  He sustained a hairline fracture in his skull, a broken scapula, a broken bone close to his elbow, four broken ribs, a bruised lung and three fractured vertebrae.

With the aid of a brace and walker and after surgery, Tierney took his first steps on Friday.  He remains in the intensive care unit at Bellevue Hospital Center.

According to his father:

Chris told me that the word ‘accident’ was invented for a reason, and this was an accident, pure and simple.  He’s just chomping at the bit to return to dancing, to go back to ‘Spider-Man.’ He loves this production so much. I haven’t had a chance to see it, but we have tickets for opening night. It looks like Chris will be in the audience with us that night, and we’ll be glad to have him there.

We wish the best of luck on Chris’s recovery and hope to see him performing again some day.

Spider-man Turn Off the DarkWith the new opening date of February 7, 2011 (anyone know the over/under on this?) the Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark will have had a total of 10 weeks for preview performances.  The delay is intended to provide time for the creators to stage a new final number, make further rewrites to the dialogue and consider adding and cutting scenes and perhaps inserting new music from Bono and the Edge.

With the extension, the musical looks to have 72 preview performances, one more than the previous record holder.  The record was held by Nick & Nora which had 71 previews.  It opened to atrocious reviews and closed one week later.

In regards to the injury that occurred on Monday, OSHA, Actors Equity and the New York State Department of Labor met with members of the musical to discuss further safety measures and those measures would be enacted immediately.  Actors’ Equity later released a statement saying the injury was caused by human error.

TMZ has footage of the accident.  You can watch the video below the fold.

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark Delayed…. Again

Bookmark and Share

Spider-man Turn Off the DarkAnyone want to start a pool to see if upcoming Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark actually opens in 2011?  The New York Times Artbeat is reporting that the musical is opening sometime in February instead of it’s previous January 11.  The article states:

…the delay is intended to provide more time for the creators to stage a new final number, make further rewrites to the dialogue and consider adding and cutting scenes and perhaps inserting new music from the composers, U2’s Bono and the Edge, who will resume working full-time on the show in late December.

This is the fourth delay as the musical originally was supposed to open in January 2010.  The preview performances have taken a beating online by those who’ve seen it.  Many of the preview performances had to be stopped due to technical issues with the musical’s elaborate effects.  The musical has also been plagued by injuries.

The musical has cost an estimated $65 million and would need to run for four years before recouping it’s cost.  The first step in that would be to actually open.
