Review: Book Of Death #3

BOD_003_COVER-B_CRAINThe terrible future chronicled in the Book of the Geomancer continues to reveal itself as an unexpected and untold player…Master Darque…emerges to make his bid for control of the Earth’s newest Geomancer! But does the reappearance of history’s most powerful necromancer mean an apocalyptic future has been avoided…or guaranteed? As the heroes of the Valiant Universe fall and nature itself turns on humanity, all that stands between the devastated planet and ultimate evil is the Earth’s undying Fist and Steel himself…Gilad Anni-Padda, the Eternal Warrior!

To briefly recap the previous issues (with only minor spoilers!), which I reviewed here and here, Tama a Geomancer from the future has been erroneously blamed for a series of unnatural disasters where nature will suddenly attack and murder people. The Eternal Warrior believes otherwise and has run off with Tama in order to keep her safe. Convinced the unnatural disasters tearing our world apart are a direct result of the new Geomancer’s arrival, the superhero team Unity were tasked with bringing Tama and the Eternal Warrior in. But that didn’t exactly go according to plan…

Valiant’s Book Of Death continues to be one of my most anticipated comics released every month, and even with my high expectations for issue #3, this comic did not disappoint. With the story now in full swing, it will probably make little sense to those who haven’t read at least the second issue of this mini series (although when the story is this good, why start with #2, and not #1?), so if that’s you then go pick up the other two issues.

If you’ve read any of the reviews I’ve written about Valiant’s comics over the past month or two, you’ll know that I’ve really become taken by the publishers offerings; one could accuse me of simply nerding out over these comics – and this series specifically. If one did accuse me of that, I wouldn’t deny it, I would fully admit to it, in fact. I mention this because it may feel as if I’m repeating myself over the course of the three reviews written for this event series so far.

Robert Venditti has already given us two great installments in this series, and he’s delivered again with Book Of Death #3. His dialogue is again fantastic, and the pacing of this issue is really great. I really enjoyed the campfire scene from beginning to end between Tama and the Eternal Warrior, both because of Venditti‘s writing and also the fantastic art by artists Robert Gill and Doug Braithwaite. The scene is brought to life brilliantly by the colouring work of David Baron and Brian Reber who give a frantic urgency to the art work without loosing any of the detail found in the pencils and inks. The appearance of the series villain is also well done; for those who, like myself, have no notion of just who the villain is, you get a real sense of his power and his evilness from the first few pages, and his opposition to the Earth’s life-giving power is conveyed nicely in a simple panel.

I’ve already mentioned that I’m a fan of this event comic, even going so far as to say that Book Of Death is my favorite event series this summer. The third installment of this series is on sale September 23rd. Book Of Death #3 is a fantastic comic, but it isn’t a standalone story, and you would do yourself a disservice if you were to start reading the story here; the finale isn’t out for another month, so you’ve still got time to catch up.

Although I’m looking forward to the conclusion next month, it’ll be a bittersweet comic for me as it’ll signify the end of the Book Of Death story line that I’ve enjoyed so much this summer.

Review: Book Of Death: Legends Of The Geomancer #2 (of 4)

bodlog2Last month I gushed over Book Of Death: Legends Of The Geomancer #1, and the absolutely beautiful artwork that you could find within the comic. Book Of Death: Legends Of The Geomancer #2 is just as stunning to look at, and continues to tell the story of the genesis of the first ever Geomancer.

Writer Fred Van Lente delivers another excellent chapter in a story that would be worth reading regardless of the artwork, and you don’t need any prior knowledge of the Valiant Universe in order to enjoy this miniseries, which is shaping up into a fantastic four issue story.

As good as the story is, however, where Book Of Death: Legends Of The Geomancer #2 really shines is in the artwork.

Juan Jose Ryp’s pencils and inks continue to impress, and he is able to convey a chaotic fight scene without loosing, or confusing, the reader. Combine this with Jordie Bellaire’s colours and you have a match made in  comic book heaven that really comes together toward the end of the comic. As brilliant as the pencils and inks are, when Jordie Bellaire gets to work adding the colour the pages are just gorgeous.

I said this last month, but it bears repeating; even if you’re only slightly familiar with Valiant and their heroes, don’t be afraid to read this comic. The story set in the Stone Age has none of  Valiant’s big name characters in it (of course we’re only on the second issue), so if you’ve no idea who those characers are then it doesn’t matter. You don’t need to know anything about them to enjoy this comic. This miniseries continues to impress, and if I’m totally honest, I think I prefer it to the Book Of Death, if only because of the art style.

This is a great miniseries. It’s a true shame that it won’t be read by as many people as it should be.

You see in order to be able to read this comic, then your Local Comic Shop must satisfy a certain numerical order on Valiant’s main event series Book Of Death, and many retailers (like my own) simply don’t have the readership required to even qualify to order this book in, and that’s a shame. It’s a shame that so many people won’t have the chance to read this print only comic that, apparently, won’t appear in trade format. Were it not for the free review copy Valiant sent to Graphic Policy, I wouldn’t have the opportunity to read this series.

If you do get a chance to read Book Of Death: Legends Of The Geomancer #2, then take it.

Review: Book of Death #2

BOD_002_COVER-A_NORDValiant’s event story line Book Of Death continues as the Eternal Warrior faces off against his former team, Unity, and it’s awesome.

To briefly recap the previous issue, which I reviewed here, a series of unnatural disasters have been occurring in the United States where nature will suddenly attack and murder people. While some believe a new Geomancer from the future to be the source, the Eternal Warrior believes otherwise and has run off with the future Geomancer. The superhero team Unity have tracked down the Eternal Warrior and the new Geomancer to a cabin in the middle of the desert. Convinced the unnatural disasters tearing our world apart are a direct result of the new Geomancer’s arrival, the combined forces of the Valiant Universe are forced to confront the Eternal Warrior about his new charge. But to prevent civilization from falling into a new Dark Age, the Eternal Warrior won’t go down without a fight!

This is, by far, my favourite event series this summer.

I say that after reading only two comics in the series, which is less than I’ve read in either Marvel’s Secret Wars or DC’s Convergence. Valiant’s Book Of Death has been fantastic thus far. I thoroughly enjoyed the first issue, and the second issue did not disappoint,  either.

Opening where Book Of Death #1 left off, we see the Eternal Warrior face off against Ninjak, X-O Manowar, Livewire and Gin-Gr, and the fight is spectacular. As much as I try and keep any spoilers from my reviews, there is a minorish spoiler here, so skip to the next paragraph if you want to go into Book Of Death #2 utterly spoiler free. That being said, the opening encounter is an excellent showcase for those unfamiliar with the skills of the man with the axe. Whilst his opponents are far from unskilled combatants, they totally underestimate their opponent. The outcome of the battle is never in doubt, and the way in which the Eternal Warrior so casually deals with Unity is a sight to behold.

Book Of Death #2 is just as worth reading as the first issue, and while you won’t necessarily need to have read the opening chapter to enjoy the first half or so of the comic, the second half will make little sense to those who haven’t read issue #1 as the second half of Book Of Death #2 moves the story on quite a bit. Robert Venditti writes some terrific dialogue during this issue, and a personal highlight was the interactions between the Eternal Warrior and the Geomancer throughout the comic.

Robert Venditti has given us two issues in what’s shaping to be one of the best miniseries of the year; and while you may think you need to have been reading Valiant before picking the series up, that’s not the case. This is a story that anyone can, and should, enjoy regardless of whether you’re a new reader of Valiant’s comics, or if you’ve been along since the beginning.

Book Of Death #2 is on sale August 19th, and I’m already counting down the days until issue #3 come out.

Review: Book of Death #1

BOD_001_COVER-A_GILLAs an avid comic book reader, I have seen quite a few indie publishers come and go. There are comic book companies Virgin Comics, which actually spawned some excellent titles to NOW Comics, which actually had the first crack at Green Hornet, before Dynamite got the rights, to Malibu Comics and Topps Comics, whom although had some promising titles were bought up by the Big 2.Then there is Valiant Comics, which seemed to go the way of Malibu and Topps, when it got shut down back in 2004, but then in 2005, two entrepreneurs breathed fresh life into the brand and restarted it.

Since that time, Valiant has enjoyed a lot of mainstream success, even bringing in talents from the Big 2 and other indie publishers to revive their flagship characters. Growing up, I was never really a fan of Valiant, as I remember seeing the title of X-O Manowar, and even flipping through the pages of one of the issues, when I used to visit Jim Hanley’s Universe in State Island, and not even remotely being interested. Then a few years ago, after I saw the cover of one of the issues for Ninjak, I did the same thing, and thumbed through a few pages, but this time, was completely enthralled, as not only the art, but also the story, was captivating. Now, Valiant has gotten into the event series business, but not at the same level as most comic book universes have, instead on a small-scale, and only with a handful of books, which actually seems to be a smart bet.

If you are not familiar with this universe, the writers give you a short synopsis on page 2, which is actually refreshing, as Marvel and DC expects a reader to know, while Valiant makes it easy for a new a reader to hop on, but not enough for a reader to be invested in any of them. Book of Death takes place soon after the previous miniseries The Valiant and has the Eternal Warrior and Geomancer hiding in Southeast Oregon as Gilad protects both Tama—an ecological messianic figure—from the world, and the world from her. Within this first issue, fatalities are everywhere, but it is the secondary characters that populate the body count thus far, with each of the main ones facing off against death in their own titles. The unfortunate thing about this book, is that Vindetti, tells you straight out that each of these characters, will die, which makes the predisposition, a hard one, for the reader to either continue or not continue with the book, if you do continue on, the action does ramp up, with death looming over each of the characters, which allows the event to come off more like a game of Clue.

This is a great introduction into this world, even though one knows from jump, not to be too invested, as each of them will die soon after. Robert Venditti’s writing has enough levity and tension, for the reader to be absorbed enough to come back for his end game to all of this. Doug Braithwaite’s art is pretty standard as compared to his previous works, but serves its purpose for this book. Overall, an interesting concept, that although has been done multiple times throughout comics, is still fascinating enough to see it done again in this universe.
