Affleck’s Batman ‘Tired And Weary’ & More DC Teases
We’ve gotten some hints as to what to expect when Ben Affleck dons the cowl to portray Batman in the upcoming Batman/Superman film. Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara described this version as:
…tired and weary and seasoned and been doing it for awhile…
At an investor gathering this past Thursday dubbed, Bank of America Merrill Lynch Media, Communications and Entertainment Conference, the CEO addressed the casting and movie and some more.
Tsujihara said Affleck was “perfect” for the film that Zack Snyder returns to direct. He added:
We think it’s going to be huge.
The CEO also described the blogosphere’s reaction as “passionate” which is putting it nicely. Addressing the Man of Steel’s performance, Tsujihara said the studio “could not be happier” as the film has grossed $660 million worldwide.
Also said:
We think it’s the perfect springboard for Batman and Superman. Ben is perfect for the vision Zack has for that character. The fact that you saw such a passionate response in the blogosphere is really kind of a testament to the love that people have for this character.
Affleck’s casting was announced August 22 causing an internet meltdown. He’ll be acting opposite of Henry Cavill’s Superman. The movie will be out in 2015.
What’s more interesting is what wasn’t said, but hinted at. Tsujihara also indicated that there will be “a lot of announcements” coming out the DC Comics which is owned by Warner Bros. There is currently three DC-based animated television shows as well as the CW’s Arrow television show and the rumored to be coming Flash television show.

The Day Ben Affleck Blew Up the Internet. Batman Bigger than the Oscars.
No matter where you turned, it seemed you couldn’t get away from the announcement that Ben Affleck would play the next Batman. But, how much did it really blow up?
Here’s searches and interest in Ben Affleck (blue) and Batman (red) over the last 30 days:
Here’s the same data over the last year:
“G” on the timeline is Ben Affleck’s win for “Best Director” for Argo and “F” is Argo winning for “Best Picture” at the Oscars. Affleck playing Batman has drawn more interest in him, than his winning numerous awards. And folks wonder why actors jump at the chance to take on these roles?
When Batman Slept with Superman’s Mom
In the weird world of Hollywood, Ben Affleck, who will be playing Batman in the Man of Steel sequel, “slept” with Diane Lane, who played Superman’s mom Martha Kent in the Man of Steel and will reprise the role in the sequel.
That all went down in 2006’s Hollywoodland which saw Affleck playing George Reeves who donned the tights to play Superman. So Affleck has played Superman as well!
And Now the Petitions about Batfleck Begin
The reaction of the internets to the casting of Ben Affleck as Batman has not been too kind. Shockingly it took about 5 hours though for the petitions to begin. Change.org currently has about a dozen petitions running with a total of about 5,500 signers between them all as of this post. As expect very few of the petitions created, and comments posted by those that sign, are coherent or even solid arguments.
This so far pails in comparison to the more than 50,000 hand written letters sent to Warner Bros. after it was announced Michael Keaton was cast as Batman in 1989.
Here’s the petitions currently up targeting various folks.
- Warner Bros to stop Ben Affleck from playing Batman. : Find someone better to follow up Christian Bale and that’s not from Gigli.
- Ben Affleck should not be cast as Batman in the new Man of Steel Movie: Stop Ben Affleck from Ruining the Batman/Superman movie in 2015
- DC Comics: Recast the new Batman instead of Ben Affleck
- The removal/boycott of Ben Affleck as Batman. : Find a much more suitable actor to play this icon.
- Zack Snyder: Cut Ben Affleck from the cast of the new Man of Steel film.
- Warner Bros. Studio: Not have Ben Affleck be the new Batman
- Ben Affleck : Not Play Batman in Upcomimg Batman/Superman Movie
- Ben Affleck aka Butt Chin Butthead: Stop him being casted as the Batman in any Batman Movie PERIOD
- PETITION -NO BEN AFFLECK FOR BATMAN!: CHANGE THE ACTOR…
- Warner Brothers: Remove Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne in the Superman/Batman movie.
- Warner Bros. and Zack Synder: Remove Ben Affleck from the role of Batman immediately.
Still no petition asking the Whitehouse to comment… yet.
Batman Casting Controversy….. in 1989
The internets were all in a storm with the rather shocking news that Ben Affleck has been cast to portray Batman/Bruce Wayne in the Batman/Superman sequel to Man of Steel set to hit theaters in 2015. This isn’t the first time the casting of Batman has caused controversy.
24 years ago Michael Keaton was cast for the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman in Tim Burton‘s version of Batman, which lead to a letter writing campaign that saw 50,000 letters sent to Warner Bros. Letters were those things we had to use to voice displeasure before the internet/Facebook/Twitter. Bob Kane, the man who created Batman, even questioned the casting.
From a New York Times article from 1989 written before the movie’s debut:
Yet even before shooting began at London’s Pinewood Studios last fall, ”Batman” generated more anger than anticipation among the comic book hero’s fans – the hard-core audience for any film such as this. In a massive letter-writing campaign, objections were raised over the studio’s emphasis on this high-concept Batman and the refusal to make a serious square-jawed film out of one of the most popular – and psychologically complex – comic book characters.
The controversy, which erupted in the front pages of The Wall Street Journal and numerous trade publications, focused on the casting of Mr. Keaton, best known as the anarchic prankster in last year’s comedy hit ”Beetlejuice,” as the vengeful vigilante, and the choice of Tim Burton, the ”Beetlejuice” creator and former Disney animator, as the film’s director. The suspicion voiced by hundreds of angry fans was that ”Batman” would be a campy send-up similar to the self-parodying but hugely popular 1960’s television series.
I think we can all agree that turned out pretty well, right?
Superman and Daredevil as Batman!? Ben Affleck Cast as Batman!
Daredevil is Batman. Larry Gigli is Batman. Rudy Duncan is Batman. AJ Frost is Batman. Ben Affleck is Batman. Warner Bros. announced today that Ben Affleck will be stepping into the cape and cowl following in the footsteps of Christian Bale and will place Bruce Wayne/Batman in the upcoming Superman/Batman movie. He’s the eighth actor to do so.
WB president Greg Silverman said in a statement:
We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some.
The film, as sequel to this year’s Man of Steel will be directed by Zack Snyder. The movie will open July 17, 2015, with Henry Cavill, Amy Adams and Diane Lane reprising their roles.
Snyder in a statement added:
Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him.
Past rumors had swirled that Affleck had been offered the chance to direct the upcoming Justice League movie. He’s proven himself an accomplished director with recent hits like Gone Baby Gone, The Town and Argo. Bale was also reportedly offered $50 million to reprise the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman.
Affleck has actually played Superman before stepping into the tights while playing real life actor George Reeves in the wonderful Hollywoodland. Reeves was an actor who played Superman and died under mysterious circumstances.
Affleck is clearly in the Warner Bros. family as the last two movies he directed, The Town and Argo, and his next one, Live by Night (he produced all three too) were all Warner Bros. films.
This is another comic franchise to add to Affleck’s belt continuing a common occurrence of a few actors playing multiple comic book characters in movies from different comic publishers.
