Cullen Bunn Launches New Army of Darkness Series

Dynamite Entertainment has announced that its flagship title and longest-running comic book series, Army of Darkness, will launch with a brand new #1 issue in December. Cullen Bunn, the celebrated writer of Deadpool, will take iconic horror hero Ash Williams somewhere he has never been before: outer space. Lost in time, low on gas… and surrounded by dames! Ashley J. Williams, the chainsaw-wielding Chosen One, is thrown through the time stream to Prohibition Era Chicago, where he lands in the middle of the war between Eliot Ness’ Untouchables and Al Capone’s criminal empire. When the evil Book of the Dead falls into the hands of a would-be gangster and a Deadite Mob rears its ugly head, Ash turns in his boomstick for a badge, his chainsaw for a tommy gun! Also, with the help of the diminutive Deadite named Ted, our hero propels to the end of the world, where waits the vengeful King Montezuma, a legion of undead Nazi soldiers, and a resurrected Yakuza crime lord! Will the Chosen One survive the ravages of time, and how does the mysterious Lady Ash fit into the equation — as a heroine or a tool of the Necronomicon?
This 144 page volume collects issues 8-13 of the second volume of Army of Darkness by ELLIOTT R. SERRANO and features all of the covers by DANIEL LEISTER and MARCIO FIORITO.

Dynamite Entertainment Epands with Dynamite Toys and Games

At the Dallas Toy Fair, Dynamite Entertainment announced the creation of a new division, Dynamite Toys and Games, dedicated to the production and manufacture of action figures, novelty products, gaming cards, board games, and more. With their tenth anniversary right around the corner, Dynamite CEO and Publisher Nick Barrucci felt the timing was right to expand into new categories and expand.

With our tenth anniversary coming up in 2014, the time is right to expand into new categories, develop cool collectibles based upon our many company-owned and licensed characters, and grow our business to incorporate exciting new licenses. Dynamite is currently ranked as the sixth most prominent supplier of comics and graphic novels to Diamond Comic Distributors, North America’s leading distributor to the comic shop specialty market.  With significant gains in the sale of ancillary product such as toys, novelties, and games into brick-and-mortar comics and specialty stores, the market is ripe for expansion, and as an established and trusted supplier to our retail partners, Dynamite will prove to be a leader in the creation and marketability of original and licensed merchandise.  Our experience with manufacturing 3D products, including our successful licensed statues, inspired this expansion.  We have been building toward Dynamite Toys and Games for several years, waiting for a special occasion to re-enter the 3D market, and our tenth anniversary is that moment.

Initial planned releases include the following properties:

  • The Six Million Dollar Man 40th Anniversary
  • Chaos Comics, via the reintroduced Eternal Toys brand
  • Red Sonja
  • Army of Darkness
  • Vampirella

Planned initial releases include action figures, a statue, and novelties related to The Six Million Dollar Man, timed to celebrate the character’s 40th anniversary. Leading into 2015, Dynamite Toys and Games plans to grow organically, building upon licensing partnerships, revealing new licenses throughout the coming year, as well as developing a new line of figures based on their popular horror character Vampirella, reflecting the character’s forty-five years of publication.  The toy division will also reinstate the Eternal Toys brand, associated in the 1990s with the Chaos Comics library of characters, for limited edition reissues of classic sculpts, including such action figures as Evil Ernie, Chastity, Jade, Lady Demon, Purgatori, and more.

SDCC 2013: Dynamite Announces Steve Niles on Ash and the Army of Darkness

AshAndAODLogoTempLeading up to this week’s San Diego Comic-Con, Dynamite has announced that their flagship comic book title, Army of Darkness, will receive a complete overhaul and a new ongoing series as imagined by Steve Niles, acclaimed author of 30 Days of Night and Batman: Gotham County Line.  A horror/action series with dark comedic overtones, the newly-titled Ash and the Army of Darkness continues the time-traveling, demon-fighting adventures of Ash Williams, the smart-mouthed hero of the 1992 cult-favorite film of the same name.

Niles is calling it a complete reboot, a word that often worries fans. But Niles is looking at this as a continuation of the movie series instead. The new series will start and the last frame of the film and then go right to the next.

Niles said about the announcement:

It’s a wild ride and I think fans of the film will be very happy because I am bringing back a lot of what made the movie so fun.  My run of Ash and the Army of Darkness takes place almost entirely in the 1300’s setting. That was what made Army of Darkness stand apart.  I’m hoping readers agree.

The film is one of my favorites and I think we have a really fresh, exciting take for Ash’s continuing adventures fighting the dead.  Dynamite has been expanding their line and have an impressive array of comic creators working with them now.  I’m looking forward to joining the team.

Niles is probably best known for his work on 30 Days of Night, but he includes a long list of series as a writer including  I Am Legend, Hellspawn, Chin Music, Simon Dark, The X-Files, Remains, Criminal Macabre, and 28 Days Later.

Should be a cool series and with Niles on it, immediately goes up into the anticipated category, especially with the persistent rumor we’ll be getting a new entry in the movie series from Sam Raimi himself.
