iHip Marvel Headphones – Tinny as Iron Man

Bookmark and Share

Marvel Captain America HeadphonesI went on a bit of a kick picking up some headphones this weekend with Marvel branding from iHip.  The headphones look pretty cool and there’s two types, one with Captain America and the other with Iron Man.  For $10, I said why not, I can show off my geek cred as I listen to music and read comics on my iPad.  And the packaging sucked me in with a great cover to a Captain America comic.  Boy, what a waste of $10.

These headphones have to be some of the worst I’ve ever listened to music with.  It was as if the music was being piped through a tin can.  It was distant, missing the surround sound excellence I expect from an Apple product.  The packaging says “noise isolating,” I just didn’t think it was the music I was trying to listen to.  It also says “engineered for quality listening,” this is clearly a lie.  “Engineered for a lacking musical experience” is more like it.

Marvel should be embarrassed they’ve put their name and brand on such a piece of shit product.  I’m angry at myself for dropping $10 on it and being sucked in by cool packaging.

Do yourself a favor and avoid these at all cost.Marvel Captain America Headphones BackMarvel Captain America Headphones Back Close UpMarvel Captain America Headphones Front Close Up

IDW Brings DOCTOR WHO Comics to iPads, iPhones and PSPs

BBC Worldwide America and IDW Publishing bring DOCTOR WHO comics
to digital audiences worldwide

[Doctor Who comics on the iPad]San Diego, CA (March 19, 2011) – IDW Publishing and BBC Worldwide America have today announced the global digital launch of IDW’s critically acclaimed DOCTOR WHO comic book series. Doctor Who fans worldwide can now follow the Doctor’s comic book adventures on their Apple iPads and iPhones, and Sony PSPs, along with IDW Publishing’s entire catalog of DOCTOR WHO comics, which is now out in digital form.

One of BBC Worldwide’s most successful franchises and the longest running science-fiction television series in the world, Doctor Who follows the adventures of the Doctor, the mysterious traveler who, with his human companions, journeys throughout all of time and space, facing a variety of foes and righting wrongs. IDW’s extensive catalog of DOCTOR WHO comics features both original stories and reprints of classic adventures. Currently, IDW’s DOCTOR WHO brings readers all-new adventures of the Eleventh Doctor that augment the on-screen excitement.

“We’re excited to bring out DOCTOR WHO comics on the PSP, as it’s a perfect comic for the game audience,” stated Jeff Webber, IDW’s director of ePublishing. “For Apple devices, while all of the issues are also available in our IDW Comics app for our regular readers, there are many ravenous DOCTOR WHO fans that may not be familiar with the comics. So we created a stand-alone DOCTOR WHO Comics app that lets us feature the Doctor at the top level of the app store, offering users worldwide a completely focused experience.”

Ed Casey, Director of Licensing, BBC Worldwide America, who brokered the deal, said: “DOCTOR WHO fans are loyal and passionate and I’m sure they’ll love the fact that they can now get their [Doctor Who comics on the PSP]favorite Time Lord in this 21st century format.”

Prior to this digital launch, IDW’s DOCTOR WHO comics were only available in print in North America. Available to international readers for the first time, DOCTOR WHO digital series presently includes over forty issues, with more added each month. The full catalog is available for iPads and iPhones as a custom branded app, and as individual issues on the PSP.

Added Webber, “Plus, it’s just awesomely fun to build an app that keeps the look and feel of something that could be a part of the TARDIS itself. It’s just possible that the app might start pulling in comics from the future that haven’t even been created yet!”

Doctor Who returns to BBC AMERICA screens in the U.S. on Saturday, April 23.

DC and Digital Comics

It was a question “if” DC was ever going to go digital but when.  Yesterday the bombshell came out of nowhere that you will now be able to catch some of your favorite comic book characters on your iPad and iPods as well as the PlayStation Network and PSP.  A wide selection of books ranging from free to $2.99 now available, including a special free 10-page preview of Superman #700 by J. Michael Straczynski and artist Eddy Barrows.

Jim Lee had this to say:

At DC Comics, it has been a top priority that DC forges a meaningful, forward-looking digital strategy.  As both a comic book creator and Co-Publisher, it was incredibly important that our plan includes not only creator incentive payments, but also an innovative component that supports comic shop owners. We see digital as an opportunity to grow our entire business.

The impressive emphasis is “creator incentive payments” and “innovative component that supports comic shop owners” in this launch.

Payments to creators has been a point of contention with some other publishers as digital distribution usually wasn’t a part of original contracts (most of which existed before this was even an idea).  Bleeding Cool has this angle covered with a copy of the email that DC sent out from Jim Lee and Dan DiDio.

As we make this announcement it’s worth noting that, although DC is not the first major publisher to enter the digital comics arena, we are the first to announce a participation plan for talent, thereby setting the industry standard in that regard. Details of our initial compensation plan will be mailed to you in hard copy for your records and should be arriving next week. In broad strokes, the compensation is calculated on a net receipts basis in order to accommodate the various reporting structures of our digital publishing partners. Most importantly, we assure you that your participation in these digital works will be equal to or exceed the participation levels that you currently receive under our additional compensation plan for print.

When it comes to retail stores, DC’s press included this nugget:

Staying true to comiXology’s support of comic retailers, DC’s partnership with comiXology also includes a first-of-its-kind Retailer Affiliate Program, which will collect a portion of digital revenues to be invested back to and on behalf of comic book retailers in a variety of initiatives.

“The ComicsPRO Board of Directors is looking forward to continuing our dialog with DC Comics to figure out how their digital strategy can lead to new customers for storefront retailers,” said Joe Field, owner/operator of Flying Colors Comics & Other Cool Stuff, an Eisner-Award winning comic book shop in Concord, California. “We’re pleased to be part of this important conversation about the future of the comics business.”

Bleeding Cool is also reporting that DC will be making Justice League Generation Lost #4 and #5 will be returnable.  It was announced the series would debut online the same day of release and in fact debuted hours before most stores were open yesterday and a day before it’s release in the UK.

Apple Now Says Same Sex Kissing is OK

CensorshipApple has reversed course concerning the blocking of an iPad graphic novel adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. According to the Big Money the application and graphic novel was blocked until the author added big black boxes censoring the illustrations of men kissing.  Techcrunch received word yesterday that Apple has reversed course and is allowing the author to resubmit the application and graphic novel in it’s original form.

Apple representative Trudy Muller explained:

We made a mistake. When the art panel edits of the Ulysses Seen app and the graphic novel adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s Importance of Being Earnest app were brought to our attention, we offered the developers the opportunity to resubmit their original drawings and update their apps.

This is the second story of censorship and graphic novels in recent weeks.  Last week news broke of Apple’s censorship of a graphic novel version of Ulysses.

These news stories make me worrisome as the iPad grows in market share for serving text and makes me want to purchase one less and less.

Ulysses Censored for the iTunes App Store

CensorshipA comic adaptation of James Joyce’s Ulysses is finally on the iTunes App store, but only after jumping through some hurdles.  Apple demanded cuts to the content for it to be available.

Rob Berry and Josh Levitas launched the graphic depiction of the story which contained cartoon nudity.  The pair had to remove the nudity before Apple would approve the app.  Apples guidelines demand no nudity.

Ulysses is no stranger to censorship as it was part of one of the most important court cases on the issue.  In 1920 after the US magazine The Little Review serialised a passage from Ulysses dealing with the main character masturbating, the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice helped get the book banned in the US for more than 10 years.

On December 6, 1933 U.S. District Judge John M. Woolsey ruled that the book was not obscene because it was not pornographic.  This decision came after United States v. One Book Called Ulysses.  The Second Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the ruling in 1934.

The creators cropped the image to pass Apple’s strict content restrictions, but the full images are available on their website for discussion.

The app is rater 17+ by Apple.
