Marvel Promotes College Football with ESPN

This January, ESPN will host the first ever College Football Playoff – and the television channel is teaming up with Marvel to promote the occasion! Only one team can be crowned champion, but which teams will make the playoff? Ultimately, a twelve-person selection committee will decide. But until then, there will be lots of campaigning from the schools and teams still in the hunt.

Marvel has released a first look at the College Football Playoff on ESPN “IN” Variant Covers that will grace the front of 8 special Marvel titles in January!

Why the cross-promotion between ESPN and Marvel? That’d be parent company Disney. Both Marvel and ESPN are owned by the house of the mouse. You can see what else Disney owns at this handy list. We look forward to the future How to Get Away With Murder graphic novels… It’ll also be interesting to see what promotion for Marvel appears on ESPN (if any).

There’s also irony that after a month of variants to highlight anti-bullying efforts, a sport which is having massive PR issues for abuse of women, a cover up of abuse, charges of rape, and more, is now getting variant covers.

Available only in comic shops in the month of January, these eight exciting Marvel titles are “IN” for the College Football Playoff on ESPN:

  • All-New Captain America #3 – 1/7/15
  • Amazing Spider-Man #12 – 1/7/15
  • Ant-Man #1 – 1/7/15
  • Avengers #40 – 1/7/15
  • Hawkeye Vs. Deadpool #4 – 1/7/15
  • Hulk #10 – 1/7/15
  • Legendary Star-Lord #7 – 1/7/15
  • The Punisher #14 – 1/7/15

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

All-New_Captain_America_1_CoverWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in! Below are ten suggestions of comics, graphic novels, or trade paperbacks you should spend some extra time checking out and think about picking up.

Pick of the Week: All New Captain America #1 (Marvel) – It shouldn’t be a surprise this comic is in the top spot. Marvel kicks off a new era for Captain America and Falcon with this brand new series and starting point. It’ll be interesting to see where the series goes, especially since Marvel’s AXIS event is still going on.

Archer & Armstrong: One Percent (Valiant) – If you’ve read Archer and Armstrong’s adventures, there’s no explanation as to why this is on the list. Hilarious political commentary with hilarious action.

Batgirl #36 (DC Comics) – Did you read issue 35? We all loved the new direction for Batgirl, and look forward to seeing what this second issue has in store for us.

Bigger Bang #1 (IDW Publishing) – The series explores the depths of humanity through the warped lens of an ever-expanding multiverse. The first issue is a fascinating read and dissection of this commonly used story trope.

Captain America and the Mighty Avengers #1 (Marvel) – The Mighty Avengers team seemed like a bit of a response to the diversity issue in comics, but the series grew into a fun story that fleshed out a bunch of under utilized characters. With Falcap in charge now, this should get really interesting.

Deep State #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Justin Jordan takes on conspiracy theories. You can read our review here.

Drifter #1 (Image Comics) – Abram Pollux barely survives a crash landing on Ouro, a lawless backwater world where life is cheap. This world’s unique properties set the stage for a story that combines the dark wonder of a strange and alien landscape with the struggles of an abandoned and lawless frontier town.

Kitchen #1 (Vertigo) – New York City, late 1970s. Times Square is a haven for sex and drugs. The city teeters on the verge of bankruptcy, while blackouts can strike at any moment.

The Resurrectionists #1 (Dark Horse) – A new creator owned series that has a cool take on reincarnation. It’s similar to some other series out there, but the first issue is a lot of fun.

Superior Iron Man #1 (Marvel) – A new direction for Tony Stark and Iron Man as he moves out west for a bit of a darker turn.

Preview: A New Hero Takes Flight in All-New Captain America #1!

This November, the hero formerly known as the Falcon soars once more, recharged, reborn and reinvigorated in All-New Captain America #1! Originally revealed on Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report and seen on CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, USA Today, New York Magazine and many, many more – Marvel has released a first look inside the gorgeous first issue! The blockbuster creative team of Rick Remender and Stuart Immonen take Sam Wilson to new heights as part of Avengers NOW!, as he dons the stars and stripes and steps into the mantle of his closest friend.

Drained of the Super Soldier Serum that gave him his strength, speed and endurance – Steve Rogers is no longer fit to wield the shield. But there must always be a Captain America – and his trusted friend and partner Sam Wilson is ready and able to take the job. With Steve’s son Ian at his side as the new Nomad, he’ll spread his wings as the new star spangled Avenger!

In an interview with Marvel.com, Remender said:

I’ve been having a lot of fun writing Sam. It’s a completely different attitude. The fact that he’s not a soldier shifts thing up a bit. Sam’s not going to be Steve. Steve can be very rigid. That can be kind of joyless at times, whereas Sam is absolutely not that.

The threat of Hydra is growing, as the terrorist band has infiltrated the Marvel Universe completely. Even worming their way into the super hero community. Anyone can be a threat, and no one is to be trusted. But what is Hydra’s ultimate goal? United by this new and more vicious Hydra, Captain America’s rogues gallery prepared to strike – aiming at the new and untested Captain America and Nomad.

Will their first day on the job be their last? Find out when All-New Captain America #1 zooms into comic shops and digital devices in November!

Updated: Marvel’s Avengers NOW! brings new Thor, Falcon/Cap, Superior Iron Man, and Dr. Stange, and more in to the spotlight

Marvel has a brand new initiative in the fall dubbed Avengers NOW! which follows Marvel NOW!, and All-New Marvel NOW! in shaking up the Marvel  universe landscape and a point to launch numerous new titles.

In November, Iron Man kicks it off with Superior Iron Man #1 which sends Tony Stark to San Francisco with a new outlook on life, and a whole new Iron Man suit, sporting a silver and black look. Much like Superior Spider-Man which saw Doc Ock take over Peter Parker’s body and mind, this Tony Stark will be hard to cheer for. The series is written by Tom Taylor and drawn by Yildiray Cinar.

In November we also get the Sam Wilson, previously the Falcon, taking up the mantle in All-New Captain America #1. The change announced on last night’s The Colbert Report, has been a while in the making, with Cap being side lined in the latest issue after her serum is sucked out of him. The series will be written by Rick Remender and art by Stuart Immonen.

Courtesy of writer Jason Aaron and drawn by Russell Dauterman, this October sees Thor #1 with a woman taking up the role, after the current Thor is determined to no longer be worthy. That change was announced this week on The View.

The change is greater than just those three, with a greater focus on some other characters who have either been featured in films, or will be. In an article with Entertainment Weekly, the characters depicted below will all feature more prominent roles. It’s not surprising that Dr. Strange (we have confirmation to expect a solo-series), Scarlet Witch, and Ant-Man are included, they’ll all be heading to the big screen soon. But, also shown are Inhuman characters Medusa and Inferno who have been getting some love in the Inhumanity storyline. Also shown are The Winter Soldier, and Deathlok, both who have series announced and are prominent in the Marvel cinematic universe either in movies or television.

All together there’s ten titles in the planning stages. With next year also seeing the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron, expect to see the return of Ultron some time in the near future. I would also speculate you’ll see some of the classic take on the characters like Cap, Thor, and Iron Man, return in some form around then too.

Avengers_NOW!Update: Here’s Marvel’s official press release:

The most popular characters. The most acclaimed creators. The most ambitious stories. This is the recharged Avengers NOW!.

This Fall, the Marvel Universe heads in an exciting and ambitious new direction as the industry’s top creators and brightest rising stars join the top Super Heroes – Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and more – to deliver the most exciting and energetic comics on the market with can’t miss all-new ongoing series!

Avengers NOW! is the start of a Marvel Universe like you’ve never seen before,” says Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso. “With massive changes coming to some of our biggest characters, Avengers NOW! is ready to kick off a bold new era of the Marvel Universe and will certainly close out 2014 with a bang.”

It all starts this October when Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman bring the thunder in Thor #1. Bereft of his mighty magic hammer Mjölnir, Thor must contend with a new God of Thunder in the Marvel Universe – and she’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen before! Who is this new mysterious leading lady? Not even Odin knows! Prepare for a senses-shattering new beginning as the all-new Thor thunders her way through the Marvel Universe!

Then, Avengers NOW! soars to new heights in All-New Captain America #1! From superstar creators Rick Remender and Stuart Immonen comes the next evolution of the Captain America mythos. Drained of the Super-Soldier Serum, the frail Steve Rogers has handpicked his shield-wielding successor – Sam Wilson, the Falcon! But as the winged warrior assumes his new heroic mantle, he’ll have to contend with a gauntlet of Captain America’s most terrifying foes! Can the new, untested Captain America stand up to his predecessor’s most vile villains? Find out this November in All-New Captain America #1!

It only gets bolder from there as the billionaire playboy unleashes his dark side in Superior Iron Man #1! Rising comic stars Tom Taylor and Yildray Cinar craft an all-new tale of a Tony Stark you’ve never seen before! Releasing the dangerous Extremis technology to the citizens of San Francisco, he’ll transform the City by the Bay into the City of Tomorrow! But at what price? And what does a world look like when it’s consumed by technology? Find out this November in Superior Iron Man #1!

Once again, the biggest creators bring you the biggest characters in the biggest stories…and it’s happening NOW!
