Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

BitchPlanet01_CoverAWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in! Below are ten suggestions of comics, graphic novels, or trade paperbacks you should spend some extra time checking out and think about picking up.

Pick of the Week: Bitch Planet #1 (Image Comics) – The highly anticipated women in- prison sci-fi exploitation riff. Think Margaret Atwood meets Inglourious. There’s lots of buzz, and some good word of mouth leading up to this first issue, and I’m happy to say, it lives up to the hype.

Afterlife With Archie #7 (Archie Comics) – It’s been too long since the last issue! One of the best series of the year.

Batgirl #37 (DC Comics) – A change in design, a change in direction, a change in attitude, a whole new series that’s not too late to check out and see what the buzz is about!

Copperhead #4 (Image Comics) – An awesome space western. A comic that’s under the radar, and so good.

Eternal #1 (BOOM! Studios) – If death wasn’t an obstacle, how would that change life? Clones toss things in the air, and this series explores the aftermath. The first issue is not what we expected, and a solid debut.

Lola XOXO #5 (Aspen Comics) – It’s too long between issues! Such a beautiful comic to look at, and the apocalyptic world is a fascinating one to explore. It’s a great comic, that’d also be a fantastic game too!

Southern Bastards #6 (Image Comics) – One of the top comic series of the year. Southern noir at its best.

Southern Dog #4 (Action Lab Entertainment) – A comic dealing with racism in the south? Yes please. Plus werewolves.

Spider-Man and the X-Men #1 (Marvel) – Guess who’s taking over? Well, this should be interesting.

The Valiant #1 (Valiant Entertainment) – Valiant puts out one of the best comic superhero universes out there. This new limited series kicks of their Valiant Next initiative, and is a perfect starting place for folks to check out what they’ve been missing. Hop on the bandwagon now, before it’s too late!

Below are ten suggestions of comics, graphic novels, or trade paperbacks you should spend some extra time checking out and think about picking up.

Pick of the Week: Saga Deluxe Edition Vol. 1 (Image) -The series everyone praises is collected in this nice deluxe edition. If you’ve missed out, well…. here you go.

Afterlife with Archie Magazine #2 (Archie) – Missed the comics? Well here you go!

Bob’s Burgers #4 (Dynamite Entertainment) – Based on the cult animated series. If you’re a fan, check out the comic, it captures the tone perfectly.

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #125 (Dark Horse) – 125 issues in and Hellboy and his world are as fun and entertaining as ever. It’s beyond impressive to pull it off. Check it out!

Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor #2 (Titan Comics) – It’ll be a bit until we get a new episode of Doctor Who, but these comics help fill the void.

Dungeons & Dragons: Legends of Baldur’s Gate #2 (IDW Publishing) – Jim Zub loves D&D and it shows off in this series based on the popular role-playing game.

Lumberjanes #8 (BOOM! Studios/BOOM! Box) – Just tons of fun. We need more comics like this.

Spider-Woman #1 (Marvel) – Marvel kicks off a new series featuring Spider-Woman. The past ones have been solid, and this one has had some controversy before its even launched. It’ll be interesting to see if Marvel can keep up the success its had with its other female lead solo series.

Winterworld #4 (IDW Publishing) – Welcome to the desolate winter world. Just a fantastic bleak story of an apocalyptic world. Absolutely under the radar of too many.

X-O Manowar #30 (Valiant) – Enter the Armorines! Valiant continues to put out one of the best comic universes out there, and this is a perfect jumping on point.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Storm_1_CoverWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in! Below are ten suggestions of comics, graphic novels, or trade paperbacks you should spend some extra time checking out and think about picking up.

Top Pick: Storm #1 (Marvel) – Thief. Goddess. Headmistress. Queen. The X-Man called Storm has always defied a single title. And her desire to better the world has never been limited to only her own kind. On a mission to foster goodwill and safeguard the mutant race’s continued existence in her own way, Storm will travel the globe, confronting man and mutant, god and monster and everything in-between. She will overthrow tyrants, quell tsunamis and strive to see her dream for the world realized. She is Storm, a hero like no other….and the skies will tremble at the sight of their namesake.

The character has never had an ongoing series, it’s about time! Marvel continues to expand the diversity of the characters fronting their comics, and with this, there’s not a better choice of a character to do it with.

Afterlife With Archie #6 (Archie Comics) – Archie’s horror series picks up after a little bit of a break. One of the best surprises of the year!

Letter 44 #8 (Oni Press) – Six months into the presidency, President Blades has deployed sci-fi superweapons to end wars in the Middle East, opening him to attacks from all sides, including a Congressman once romantically linked with the First Lady. Meanwhile, in space, as construction on the alien Chandelier is finally completed, the crew of the Clarke will truly understand what they’re facing.

Ragnarok #1 (IDW Publishing) – Walter Simonson is known for his fantasy, especially his work on Thor. Some think it was a definitive take on the character. He returns to that genre with a new series from IDW.

The Shadow Hero (First Second) – In the comics boom of the 1940s, a  legend was born: the Green Turtle. He solved crimes and fought injustice just like the other comics characters. But this mysterious masked crusader was hiding something more than your run-of-the-mill secret identity… The Green Turtle was the first Asian American super hero.

The comic had a short run before lapsing into obscurity, but the acclaimed author of American Born Chinese, Gene Luen Yang, has finally revived this character in Shadow Hero, a new graphic novel that creates an origin story for the Green Turtle.

Skullkickers #29 (Image Comics) – Consistently one of the most entertaining comics on the market from the uber-talented Jim Zub.

Supreme: Blue Rose #1 (Image Comics) -Warren Ellis reintroduces the central image comics character. Should be interesting.

Transformers Vs. G.I. Joe #1 (IDW Publishing) – The two properties collide harking back to the classic 80s comics.

Trees #3 (Image Comics) – Another series from Warren Ellis explores mysterious pillars that have cropped up around the world. What do these alien artifacts mean or want?

Winterworld #2 (IDW Publishing) – Chuck Dixon’s cool comic that looks at survival in a bleak winter world. Think Snowpiercer, but outside the train.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

bigtrouble_01_coveraWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in. Below are ten suggestions of comics, graphic novels, or trade paperbacks you should spend some extra time checking out.

Top Pick: Big Trouble in Little China #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Jack Burton is back…. in comic form! Based on the cult movie, Eric Powell and John Carpenter are bringing us more adventures, something I’ve wanted for a long time.

Afterlife With Archive Vol. 1: Escape From Riverdale (Archie Comics) – Talk about a fantastic series. If you missed the individual issues, you can now catch them all in this handy trade. Archie took a chance when it decided to make a mature Archie comic featuring zombies. But, after reading the first issue any doubts were washed away. One of our favorite series.

Caliban #3 (Avatar Press) – Garth Ennis does horror in space. Creepy, and fun…. in a weird way.

Nailbiter #2 (Image Comics) – The first issue left us wanting more. This series looks into why so many serial killers originate from one town, and why the person investigating that question has gone missing.

Quantum & Woody #11 (Valiant Entertainment) – One of the funniest, and most entertaining, super hero comics on the market.

Revelations #6 (BOOM! Studios) – It’s murder at the Vatican in this detective story. This issue wraps it all up and we have a better idea who committed the murder.

Rise of the Magi #1 (Top Cow) – A new series from Top Cow. The look is awesome and concept very cool.

Super Ego HC (Magnetic Press) – What’s it like to be the shrink to the heroes?

Superior Foes of Spider-Man #12 (Marvel) – One of Marvel’s best comics. This one follows Spider-Mans C list villains. Every issue has been fantastic.

The Wake #9 (DC Comics/Vertigo) – The second volume jumped ahead a few years, but is no less awesome. From Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy, welcome to this very different world.

Review: Afterlife with Archie #5

AWA_5-0Archie and his friends find themselves barricaded inside Lodge Manor with every zombie ambling towards them. Tensions are high, relationships are tested and longtime character meet their final fate in the conclusion to the “Escape from Riverdale” saga. Archie must gather all his friends – survivors of a zombie rampage – and escape their hometown of Riverdale. But, is he capable of leading the escape?

Afterlife with Archie #5 shows exactly what makes this series so good, mixing in dread, horror, some scares, and the very human interactions and reactions to a world crumbling around them. This issue especially focuses on Veronica’s butler, Smithers, as we’re taken through his experiences with the Lodge family. That focus creates some amazing moments, as Smithers acts as more of a father and protector than Veronica’s own father Hiram. It also builds up tension, where the family’s employee must decide as to whether or not do as he’s told, or what he thinks is right and the most likely thing that’ll allow all of them to survive.

The issue also is peppered with small interactions that are amazing. There’s Nancy, Ginger, and Chuck’s discussion. Then there’s Reggie and Kevin Keller, where we learn Reggie is a bit homophobic. There’s the strange relationship of Cheryl and Jason, and then finally Betty, Archie, and Veronica. All of these interactions and moments create such depth for each character, and often times of heartbreak. That attention to detail, and additions that enhance the story as a whole is courtesy of writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa who has elevated this series from a one-note punchline, to a comic that’s about more than zombies, but teenagers and adults dealing with a decaying world. Aguirre-Sacasa seems to know, and shows in his writing, that the best zombie tales are about more than the shuffling undead.

All of this is brought to (un)life courtesy of Francesco Francavilla whose art is always amazing. It’s a style made for horror, but as shown in this issue, is more than amazing for quiet human moments. It’s a perfect combination of writer, artist, and subject. I can’t imagine anyone else even attempting this, or even coming close to the excellence we see on the page. But, the brilliance of the art is more than just what’s drawn, it’s the use of color which adds to the mood. A limited palette on each page, and in the series as a whole has created a look that’s damn near perfect.

Afterlife with Archie continues to impress, quickly vaulting to being one of my favorite comics on the market right now. It’s the perfect balance of horror and humanity, and everyone should do themselves a favor and check it out.

The do or die moment has arrived! Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

andre the giant life and legendWednesdays is new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in. Below are ten suggestions of comics and graphic novels you should spend some extra time checking out.

Top Pick: Andre the Giant: Life & Legend (First Second) – I remember watching wrestler Andrew the Giant growing up in the 80s. This graphic novel is a condensed version of his life touching on the important things that shaped the man, and giving us some insight into such a fascinating individual.

Afterlife with Archie #5 (Archie Comics) – Afterlife with Archie has been an amazing spin on the Archie characters throwing in zombies, death, and anything goes. I never thought I’d be so excited over the Archie characters, but I can’t wait for each issue’s release of this series.

Bee and Puppycat #1 (BOOM! Studios/KaBOOM!) – A new all ages title from KaBOOM!, and imprint of BOOM!. The Kickstarter hit has come to comic form, with a magical tale that’s fun for the whole family.

Fubar: Better Red Than Dead (Alterna Comics) – Another zombie tale, this indie series is a great take on alternate history. Everything I’ve read from these guys have been amazing and I can’t recommend anything they’ve done enough.

Lumberjanes #2 (BOOM! Studios/BOOM! Box) – The hit series just keeps getting better. This one from BOOM!’s imprint BOOM! Box is about a group of girls at a summer camp where things are a bit… weird. It’s exactly what we need more of in comics.

Rust Vol. 3: Death of Rocket Boy (BOOM! Studios/Archaia) – If you haven’t read the first two Rust graphic novels, you’ve been missing out. This third volume, we’ll hopefully find out a bit more concerning the mysterious Jet. Each volume’s story has been entertaining, and the art is amazing.

Starlight #3 (Image Comics) – Mark Millar’s riff on Flash Gordon has been fantastic each issue so far. He’s hit all the right notes with each issue’s release, mixing in action, while tugging at our heart strings.

This One Summer (First Second) – Another graphic novel from First Second, Rose and Windy are summer friends whose families have visited Awago Beach for as long as they can remember. But this year is different, and they soon find themselves tangled in teen love and family crisis

United States of Murder Inc. #1 (Marvel/Icon) – In this oversized first issue, you will discover a world in which the families of organized crime never lost their stranglehold on the United States. From Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Avon Oeming.

The Walking Dead #127 (Skybound) All Out War has ended…. where do we go from there?
