The World of Skylanders Comes to Comics

In conjunction with Activision, IDW Publishing is proud to announce the first-ever Skylanders comic-book series, penned by renowned comic-book writer Ron Marz with Mike Bowden and David Baldeon as lead artists. In the world of video games, Skylanders is a global phenomenon and the best-selling kids’ game franchise since its launch in 2011. Now fans have the opportunity to follow the adventures of all their favorite characters from Skylands through the magic of comic books. The first issue, a prequel to the Skylanders Trap Team storyline, actually provides fans an inside look at where some of their favorite Skylanders came from, and even gives them a first look at a few all-new characters from the upcoming game.

IDW Publishing has been known for the quality and care given to some of the most beloved all-ages properties, and Skylanders is no different. The videogame sensation is making the leap to the pages of comics this July, debuting at San Diego Comic-Con 2014. Skylanders #0 features an introductory 16-page story as well as character guides and additional back-up information. The issue will be launched in both print and digital during SDCC weekend.

Skylanders will also join IDW’s successful Micro Comic Fun Packs line-up this fall and will be available in comic-book stores as well as mass-market retailers this October. Distribution is expected in the following territories: United States, Canada, France, Italy, United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Australia and New Zealand.

Activision’s Marvel Games Get Pulled

deadpool_gamescom_two_are_better_than_oneLooks like Activision‘s licenses for a few Marvel video games are up if their disappearance is any indication. The below games have been removed from the Playstation Network, Xbox Live and Steam. Those who already purchased them are fine, it’s just new digital purchases aren’t possible. You can probably find most of these in bargain bins as physical disks now anyways, so really folks will only miss out on the DLC that might not be available in physical form.

Gone are:

  • Deadpool
  • Spider-Man: Edge of Time
  • Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions
  • Spider-Man: Friend or Foe
  • Spider-Man: Web of Shadows
  • X-Men Origins: Wolverine
  • X-Men Destiny
  • X-Men: The Official Game

This isn’t the first time this has happend. In 2010, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 and its downloadable content were removed in a similar move. That’s the breaks when it comes to licensing deals and also a good argument as to why physical media is here to stay, and should stay, for a long time.

High Moon Studios’ Deadpool Team Laid Off

There’s some potentially awesome video games hitting shelves this year based on comic books, Deadpool being one of them. With the game now complete that means the team behind it, High Moon Studios, has been laid off. Activision has told Kotaku:

Activision Publishing consistently works to align its costs with its revenues – this is an ongoing process. With the completion of development on Deadpool, we are taking a reduction in staff at High Moon Studios to better align our development talent against our slate. Approximately, 40 full-time employees will be impacted globally. We are offering those employees who are impacted outplacement counseling services.

This is pretty standard for the video game industry. Doesn’t mean it sucks any less.
