Review: Absolute Carnage vs Deadpool #1

Two characters I generally dislike come together in Absolute Carnage vs Deadpool #1, an entry in the Absolute Carnage event. And even though the issue has a more comedic tone than the rest of the event’s horror, it still works and entertains. Yes, I enjoyed a comic with Deadpool and Carnage at the center of it.

Written by Frank Tieri, the issue sees Deadpool finally piss Spider-Man off enough that Spider-Man stops talking to him unless Deadpool seeks help. Off to Ravencroft Deadpool goes but unbeknownst to him, the place is the hideout for Carnage and his cult. For those that don’t know, Absolute Carnage has Carnage and his growing army attempting to get the spines of symbiote wearers to free their god. Up to this comic, the event has had a nice tinge of horror to it. Absolute Carnage vs Deadpool #1 takes a bit of a different route focusing more on Deadpool’s humor.

That humor extends to Carnage who comes off more as a laughable villain than the nightmare depicted in other issues. That’s not a bad thing but there’s absolutely a difference in tone in this comic versus all others. It makes this issue a bit of an outlier. That also makes it a breather in a rather serious and “scary” event.

What also works is Carnage and Deadpool themselves. They play off each other. With tones so diametrically opposed they somehow balance each other out and become tolerable to me.

The art by Marcelo Ferreira fits the tone of it all quite well. With ink by Robert Poggi and color by Rachelle Rosenberg the art is able to do both humor and horror. Compared to early parts of the comic, the tone of the art begins to shift as Deadpool enters the building of nightmares and continues to shift as things spin out of control. The lettering is key too. Joe Sabino nails it with a style that emphasizes the nature of Carnage and his followers.

While I’m not quite there to say you should go out and buy the comic, I do think the trade will be a lot of fun to read.

Review: Absolute Carnage: Scream #1

So far, I’ve enjoyed Absolute Carnage. It’s an event that’s done a fine balance into the horror/gore genre without completely crossing a line. It also has been fairly friendly to new readers. Absolute Carnage: Scream #1 continues that balance but tips a bit too much into unfriendly for new readers.

Written by Cullen Bunn, the comic sees the return of Scream, one of the rainbow of symbiotes that exist. The comic does an excellent job of delivering that horror tinge to what is a superhero story at its core. The resurrection of Scream has a nice creepy factor to it. But, the comic relies a bit much on Scream’s past to really be enjoyable.

The art by Gerardo Sandoval helps a bit. Absolute Carnage: Scream #1 has some twisted moments building off of the reader’s imagination. Victor Nava‘s ink, Erick Arciniega‘s color, and Cory Petit‘s lettering help deliver the chaotic nature of the issue. The resurrection scenes have a gruesome quality about them. The New York scenes have some solid panel work that emphasizes the hunt that’s going on. The art, like the other Absolute Carnage issues, is key at delivering the tone of it all.

The comic is good but not great. There’s a reliance on knowing two characters and without that, it lacks the punch to really sell the issue. Still, as it progresses the action will likely be the draw and hopefully more explained. Absolute Carnage: Scream #1 is an interesting piece of the bigger puzzle but doesn’t quite stand on its own yet.

Review: Absolute Carnage: Separation Anxiety #1

Absolute Carnage: Separation Anxiety #1 is everything you’d hope for in a tie-in to the Carnage focused event. The comic is a follow-up in a way to Deadpool vs. Carnage. At the end of that series, four of the five Life Foundation Symbiotes – Riot, Phage, Agony, and Lasher – bonded to a stray dog, wandering the Midwest. But with Carnage descending on New York, the call to join him is too great.

Written by Clay McLeod Chapman, Absolute Carnage: Separation Anxiety #1 is horror done right. The comic revolves around an abusive family who is paid a visit by the symbiotes. From there, it’s a descent into destruction and murder as the family is consumed.

The comic is rather simple in a way taking the trapped in a house while hunted horror setting. But, it works really well. Chapman leaves it open as to who will and won’t escape and you can feel the tension build as the comic progresses. Sure, there’s a lot of tropes here but that’s also partially what makes horror enjoyable.

The one negative to the comic is, if you’ve never read Deadpool vs. Carnage, the symbiotes aren’t really explained. The dog is a mystery. I haven’t read that previous series but I still enjoyed this for the spiral into death that it is.

Part of that enjoyment is due to Brian Level‘s art. Along with color by Jordan Boyd and lettering by Travis Lanham, the art emphasizes the terror. There are literal spirals that play off the Knull motif and the out of control nature of it all. Lanham’s lettering provides a disturbing “tone” to the dialogue. Boyd’s colors at times add a sickly palette. The art and lettering come together to build on and emphasize the scariness of it all.

The comic absolutely delivers horror tropes but there’s something to it that makes it all enjoyable. There’s an unknown aspect to the comic that makes its story all the more scary and disturbing. Add in just enough macabre and it comes together to create the perfect tone for a comic tied into Carnage.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Absolute Carnage: Scream #1/Absolute Carnage: Separation Anxiety #1 (Marvel) – Absolute Carnage was a hell of a start to Marvel’s latest event. This week is the big test to see how the miniseries tie-ins hold up and these are the first two victims… we mean comics to read.

Age of Conan: Valeria #1/Conan the Barbarian: Exodus #1 (Marvel) – Marvel has been knocking it out of the park when it comics to the revamped Conan line of comics and as usual, we want to see new additions can keep up that quality.

Once & Future #1 (BOOM! Studios) – An ancient evil is brought back by Nationalists and an ex-monster hunter and her grandson must stop it.

Omni #1 (Humanoids/H1) – A doctor acquires superpowers and finds out she’s not the only one. The H1 superhero universe gets expanded and we’re intrigued as this one seems to be one of the key series.

Powers of X #2 (Marvel) – While Hickman’s take on the X-Men universe has our team divided as to what we think, we’re all intrigued as to what comes next.

Reaver #2 (Image Comics) – It’s a fantasy Dirty Dozen and we’re good with it. Simple concept and one we can just sit back and enjoy.

Second Coming #2 (AHOY Comics) – The comic had a lot of controversy leading up to it but in the end, the first issue was entertaining with a nice sendup of current culture versus Jesus’ teachings. We’ll see where the series goes from there.

Shows End #1 (Mad Cave Studios) – A young girl runs away to the freakshow to find refuge in the 1920s. Definitely different when it comes to a comic series.

Unearth #2 (Image Comics) – Solid horror and suspense that has us wanting to explore the caves it’s set in.

White Trees #1 (Image Comics) – An oversized first issue by Chip Zdarsky, Matt Wilson, and Kris Anka. Three warriors have to put aside their memories of war to find their missing children.
