Going Green

In a world where composting human remains is a growing trend, what happens when our loved ones return, growing out of their composted remains into the people they once were?

The team behind Going Green explore this concept with their forthcoming original graphic novel, now live on comic book crowdfunding site Zoop. Rising star artist Vincenzo Federici joins co-writers Scott Duvall and novelist and indie filmmaker Sean Reliford for a story rooted in family, death, and how we deal with both.

Going Green is the supernatural family drama of Locke & Key meets the eco-horror of Annihilation in a modern-day monster comic with heart. This is a tale of family, loss, and second chances in a strange new world where the dead emerge from soil derived from their composted remains, giving them life anew.

Our story begins in the Pacific Northwest after the Dunn children suffer the tragic loss of their father. Instead of burying him, they go the route of an affordable new method of laying your loved ones to rest called Going Green, which composts the remains into soil as a greener alternative. Shortly after, their lives are uprooted as their formerly deceased dad is reincarnated as a plant-hybrid creature.

Meanwhile, a dangerous, kaiju-like hive mind comprised of the reanimated remains of the town’s deceased, is beginning to cause havoc as an internal battle wages within its ecosystem of conflicting personalities.

Vincenzo and Scott are re-uniting after their first collaboration on the Bruce Campbell-inspired comic crossover, Army of Darkness/Bubba Ho-Tep. Rounding out this groovy reunion are colorist Michele Monte and Ringo award-winning letterer Taylor Esposito, plus Eisner-nominated cover artist Sara Richard.

In addition to the 100-page graphic novel available in both print and digital (which includes 84 pages of story plus extras), add-ons will include stickers, signed and numbered art prints, original art commissions, signed copies of Army of Darkness/Bubba Ho-Tep #1, the chance to cameo in Going Green, plus more surprises and collector’s items signed by legendary comic book creators.

A Good Sport

Publisher Stacked Deck Press will launch a crowdfunding campaign for their upcoming book, A Good Sport, on the platform Zoop, coming soon.

A Good Sport is a graphic memoir written and drawn by French cartoonist Soizick Jaffre, detailing her participation in the 2018 Gay Games, her lifelong love of athletics, and her own personal search for freedom. This memoir is visually rich with Jaffre’s colorful, expressive illustration style that runs the gamut from realistic portrayal to eye-popping surrealism. A Good Sport deftly balances both personal and world history to paint a picture of feminist triumph and queer self-determination.

Jaffre’s journey takes her from the beaches of France to the streets of Saigon, from the cafes of Tel Aviv to the bowling alleys of America. Along the way we learn some of the history of the Gay Games and their origins in Olympian Tom Waddell’s fight against discrimination. We also see how the Games provide a gathering point for a world of queer athletes whose drive to compete is also an expression of their personal struggles for equal rights in their home countries. Throughout A Good Sport, Jaffre makes the connection between one’s right to participate in a chosen sport and the “game of freedom” that we all must play to become our best selves.

A Good Sport is a full-color trade paperback over 150 pages in length, published by award-winning imprint Stacked Deck Press. It features an introduction by cartoonist and comics scholar Justin Hall and a foreword by Gay Games organizer Pascale Reinteau. A Good Sport has something to inspire, inform, and delight readers from all walks of life.

Interested readers can sign up for email updates for this project at the campaign prelaunch page.

Let Her Be Evil

If you’re looking for sympathetic anti-heroines or villainesses with tragic backstories, you won’t find them here. Let Her Be Evil is a celebration of unapologetically wicked women with cruel intentions—of the nasty, the vile, the rage-fueled monstresses who know exactly what they want and aren’t afraid to get it by any means necessary.

The crowdfunding campaign for this 128-page softcover anthology has launched on Zoop and funded in less than a day. The comic is spearheaded by comics newcomer, Cassandra Jones. Jones comes from the world of traditional publishing as an editor, and has assembled an impressive roster of creators for her debut comics work. Let Her Be Evil features seventeen original stories, including new work by Heather Antos, Brent Fisher, Rio Burton, Kamila Krol, Moe McGonagle, as well as dozens of other writers, artists, colorists, and letterers.

The goal of this anthology is to provide the same narrative space that villainess’ male counterparts enjoy in movies, books, and comics without being explained away by child loss or sexual assault, and to free them of the preconceived notion that they should be morally punished for their deeds while we allow male villains to be evil without comment.

Rewards include the book, art prints, stickers, and much more.
