Transformers Reigns at the 2014 Box Office, Snowpiercer Shows Strength

It was the top earning film worldwide of the year earning hundreds of millions more than the next film. It was also the most profitable. Taking away its estimated budget, the film made $877.4 million what was 4.18 times its budget, the best of the bunch for both stats.

Domestically, Guardians of the Galaxy was the top earner, bringing in $333 million. Globally that film earned $772.6 million.

But, when it comes to films with the best legs, Snowpiercer blows all the competition out of the water. The film opened to limited release, and earned $171,187 its first weekend domestically. The film went on to earn $4.6 million. That’s an earning of 26.66 times what it opened with. Fellow small film We Are the Best!, which was based on a graphic novel, earned 10.22 times what it opened with.

All together films based on comics, or had a comic tie-in, brought in $7.7 billion. Films based on Marvel properties earned $2.94 billion of that.

Apes Top Robots at the Box Office

dawn of the planet of the apesIt’s not much of a surprise, but Dawn of the Planet of the Apes topped the weekend box office earning an estimated $73 million. That debut is about a 33% improvement from 2011’s Planet of the Apes which debuted with $54.8 million.

The film’s audience was 58% male and 55% over the age of 25. Diversity was also present with the crowd roughly 48% Caucasian, 23% African-American, 16% Hispanic, and 14% Asian. The film received an A- CinemaScore and is currently at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

When it comes to other comic related movies, Transformers: Age of Extinction dropped to second, earning $16.5 million. Domestically the film has earned $209 million and internationally $543.5 million.

The Edge of Tomorrow earned an additional $1.865 million the past weekend to bring it’s domestic gross to $94.55 million in it’s sixth week at the box office. Internationally the film has earned $256 million.

X-Men: Days of Future Past was in 16th place adding a little over $1 million to bring the domestic total to $229.2 million. Internationally the film has earned $731.4 million.

Snowpiercer added $677,000 to it’s total and brings the domestic amount to $2.7 million. Internationally the film has earned $80.2 million. Interestingly in this third week of release the film was released on video on demand, so the amount earned that way isn’t reflected in the total.

As far as worldwide grosses for 2014 of comic related movies, Transformers is now on top with $752.5 million, X-Men is second at $731.4 million, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is third at $712.4 million, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is fourth at $705 million, the Edge of Tomorrow is in tenth place at $350.6 million, 300: Rise of an Empire is twelfth with $331.1 million, Snowpiercer is 33rd with $82.9 million, and We Are the Best! has earned $157,000 to be at spot 150. At the end of the month Guardians of the Galaxy opens, which is likely to vault into one of the top earning spots of the year.
