Magnetic Press Pays Tribute to Osamu Tezuka in the Two-volume Anthology, Tezucomi

Celebrated graphic novel and art book publisher Magnetic Press has announced the launch of the two-volume anthology Tezucomi celebrating the works of legendary Japanese mangaka Osamu Tezuka. Featuring material produced by Tezuka Productions, this 600-page tribute will feature 18 original short stories by 20 top artists and authors from Europe collected into a set of two 300-page volumes. Showcasing many of Tezuka’s most popular characters, from Astro Boy and Kimba to Black Jack and Big X, the series will nod to the full spectrum of his incredible body of work, including some of his lesser-known creations.

Featuring a creative lineup hand-selected by Tezuka Productions from some of the most talented artists and writers in France and Spain, this collection of short stories will celebrate the influence Tezuka’s work has had on their own careers while introducing or entertaining readers of a new generation. The creative roster includes Ken Niimura, Joe Kelly, Juan Diaz Canales, Kenny Ruiz, Belen Ortega, Victor Santos, Mathieu Bablet, JD Morvan, Mig, David Lafuente, Bertrand Gatignol, LuisNCT, Elsa Brants, Reno Lemaire, Brice Cossu, Sourya, and more. The new material was produced as part of Tezuka Production’s 2018 celebration of what would have been Osamu Tezuka’s 90th birthday. This new release is in celebration of his 95th.

Often referred to as “the Father of Manga,” Osamu Tezuka was one of the most prolific and pioneering manga authors in Japan. Widely considered the Japanese equivalent to Walt Disney, his first published work, New Treasure Island, was released in 1947, initiating a successful career spanning 40 years with multiple influential and genre-defining creations. He is credited with producing over 150,000 pages of manga and over 60 animated projects before his passing in 1989. While his early successes included children-oriented stories such as Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion, his style and direction matured over time to include historical tales such as Buddha and darker psychological dramas such as Black Jack, Dororo, and MW. Tezucomi pays tribute to the full spectrum of Tezuka’s library, from light to dark.

The two-volume anthology will be released in two formats: as manga-sized trade paperbacks (5.25” x 7.5”) for traditional mangaphiles and as premium gallery-sized hardcovers (7.5” x 11”) for book lovers. Both formats will contain the same black-and-white content, 300 pages per volume, presented in a traditional right-to-left manga reading format. Both formats will be offered for pre-order through a campaign launching on Kickstarter this Tuesday, August 1st.

In addition to the two different versions of the two-volume series, fans can also pre-order deluxe, limited-edition slipcased sets of either format, available exclusively through the campaign. A super-limited “Super-Fan” package of both boxed sets will include an exclusive etched metal bookmark and red-foil bookplates. Only 250 Super-Fan sets will be available.

Other campaign-exclusive features will include bonus art prints by contributing artists Olivier Vatine, Rian Gonzales, Miki Montllo, and Toru Terada. Other exclusive bonus items will be revealed and awarded to pre-order customers throughout the 18-day campaign.

The pre-order campaign will run for 18 days from 9am PST Tuesday, August 1^st, until 5pm PST Friday, August 18^th. Books are expected to ship to pre-order customers in November, with the trade paperback edition available in bookstores in Q1 2024.

Magnetic Press announces Black Box Chronicles, a new sci-fi anthology

Magnetic Press has announced the upcoming premiere of their first original production in partnership with Horrible Future: Black Box Chronicles, a science-fiction anthology that spans multiple generations in mankind’s expansion into space and beyond the stars. Developed by Horrible Future founders Mark Schey and Chris Northrop, the anthology serves as an introduction to the sprawling drama and high-concept fiction that will be explored in a multi-media plan that includes print, digital, audio, video, and interactive elements.

Black Box Chronicles is set in the future age known as The Great Outward Expansion wherein mankind has not only left earth to colonize other planets but other star systems as well. Humanity’s natural instinct to explore is given free reign through exponentially advancing technology, reaching new plateaus of knowledge faster than anyone could have imagined. But regardless of how much data and processing power civilization achieves, there remains one barrier that can only be crossed in one direction: the one separating life and death. But one Scavenger believes he may be able to solve life’s biggest mystery by assembling scraps of data from a variety of Black Boxes recovered from several centuries’ worth of spacecraft that all share a secret connection, one that may answer the question of what happens in our final moments when we pass into “The Great Dark.”

Told by a creative team of some of the comic industry’s most talented artists and writers, this collection of 15 interconnected short stories set the historical groundwork for the Black Box Universe. Horrible Future founders Mark Schey and Chris Northrop have gathered a roster of seasoned talent from around the world, including David Mack, Michael Avon Oeming, Zach Howard, Eryk Donovan, Marco Fodera, Gavin Smith, Toru Terada, David Messina, Giovanni Rigano, Drew Moss, Christian Dibari, Taki Soma, and Mario Alberti.

In addition to the anthology, a world-building Art Book entitled Black Box Design Space will be released featuring an encyclopedic look at the various devices, locations, and technologies that make up this new future setting. Fully illustrated by concept artist Shane Molina, this supplemental volume will further immerse readers into the world of Black Box through rich cutaway schematics and lore that add further dimension and layers to the mysteries explored in the anthology.

In addition to the anthology and encyclopedia, additional supplementary content is in development, including original music by one of the fictional characters, longform prose short stories, and tabletop roleplaying materials using Magnetic’s D6MV System based on the classic D6 System by West End Games.

Black Box Chronicles will debut on Kickstarter on Tuesday May 16^th with special limited hardcover editions of both the anthology and the Design Space art book. The campaign-exclusive hardcover edition of the anthology will feature artwork by David Mack, while the general trade paperback edition will feature artwork by Shane Molina. A limited, deluxe slipcase set will feature both hardcover books inside a blue foil-laden slipcase with magnetic closure. Other campaign exclusives will include resin miniatures of some of the ships and drones featured in the series, a deck of premium playing cards featuring design motifs and artwork from inside the universe, and other unlockable bonus items that will be revealed at launch.

Small World Comes to Kickstarter from Toru Terada and Magnetic Press on April 6

Magnetic Press has announced their latest exciting Kickstarter campaign, a dark sci-fi fantasy tale for grown-ups called Small World, by written by JD Morvan and illustrated by celebrated mangaka Toru Terada!

Small World mixes elements of anime-inspired futurism with the gritty flair rolled up into a vice-filled version of a European children’s book. Not only is the blend of elements wholly unique, but the book is also the only full-length graphic novel by popular mangaka Toru Terada.

To further complement the originality of the book, Magnetic Press is offering an exclusive, campaign-only variant edition featuring a brand-new cover by in-demand comic artist Peach Momoko. This variant edition will only be available through the Kickstarter campaign. Furthermore, fans can pre-register their support to receive an exclusive, Limited Edition 8.5×11” Linen Cardstock Print of Peach’s cover art for FREE. One lucky backer can even purchase Peach’s original 11×15” watercolor painting.
