Review: The Unworthy Thor #5

We finally get the answer to what did Fury whispered to Odinson. I will say first off, it felt very anticlimactic, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. Like a lot of comic book moments, this felt very hyped and dragged out, but when we got to the payoff, I was scratching my head.

I won’t spoil The Unworthy Thor #5 for people who have not read it, but let’s just say it wasn’t the big moment I thought we would get, especially with an awesome writer like Jason Aaron. This could pay off down the road, so I will wait and see before I rush to judgment on that, but I just wanted more.

The Unworthy Thor #5 brings this miniseries of Odinson to a close, but it is far from the end of his story. There is a lot of setup in this issue for what seems like things that will happen down the road with Thanos, Hela, Death, that other hammer, and even The Collector. Things don’t wrap up neatly, but that is okay, because sometimes they shouldn’t. However, I still felt like I was left wanting so much more. Whether that be another issue or two, or a jaw-dropping conclusion.

Even with my slight disappointment with the ending of this series, I still enjoyed this book. It was fun to have Odinson back, while also not casting Jane out (though who knows what will happen down the road). From drinking mead to trying to rescue his home world from The Collector, to fighting talking dogs, to The Black Order, Thanos, and hanging with the best horse in the galaxy, Beta Ray Bill, I enjoyed the journey. The Mighty Thor is one of my favorite Marvel books each month, so I hope to see Odinson show up and continue his adventure next to Jane very soon.

The art by Olivier Coipel, Kim Jacinto, and Pascale Alixe has a fantasy feel to it that fits the world and lore very well. Even as we travel across space the book never loses that feeling. You truly get the feeling that this book is for Gods beating each other up, and the art depicts that in a very biblical way. The colors by Mat Lopes and Jay David Ramos bring everything to life with bright yet muted tones. It adds to the art to make a very unique and interesting style. Everything has a soft, almost dream-like feel to it.

I may not be satisfied with what was whispered to Odinson, but I did enjoy this issue. The whisper is still something that makes sense to the overall story, and still works quite well. Sometimes my expectations can be so high, that I can feel let down, but I would still recommend this comic to any fan of Odinson, Jane, someone who read Original Sin, or anyone looking for fun god fights. I mean, Beta Ray Bill is in this book, and that should be reason enough to buy it. So I will say in conclusion, that this book is worthy of a purchase. I will see myself out!

Top Pick: Batman/TMNT Adventures #5 (IDW Publishing) – This book has just been plain all out fun! I was skeptical of the quality it would be after the last Batman/ TMNT crossover, which was good but this story so far just ninjas the previous teams ass! It takes the very best aspect of Batman: The Animated Series and melds it together in the Turtles world. Each issue is better than the previous and even though they are leaning to The Mad Hatter being the big boss behind it all, when Tetch is written correctly he is quite the villainous force. I can’t wait to see how this joyride through my childhood icons ends.

Action Comics # 976 (DC Comics) – Well here it is, the battle for Superman’s future! Can Supes defeat Myx (not spelling his damn name) and get back his family or will he lose more than he gained in the process? All I know is if Jon becomes a casualty out of it, I’m going hunting with Kryptonite bullets. Nevertheless a good twist on a classic Superman character and I am enjoying the various runs on my hero since Rebirth. Can anyone say New New 52?

Reborn #5 (Image Comics) – I have really dug this team up of Millar and Capullo thus far. I don’t think it has tremendous long term value but the short term storyline has been fantastic. The art is some of Capullo’s best and Millar’s writing is less Millar-y than usual which keeps it at a nice tempo for me. Very interesting look into the theory of reincarnation and one that wants to make sure my pet gets all the love he can get before I meet him in the afterlife. A fun ride for sure, not ready to get out of the car yet.

Iron Fist #1 (Marvel Comics) – The timing for this couldn’t be better as I have just reached the middle of my binge watching of “Iron Fist” on Netflix and I love it. My Danny Rand – ometer is at it’s peak right now so more firery chi punching for me is a must. This book is welcome, hope it meets my kung fu needs.

Top Pick: The Unworthy Thor #5 (Marvel) – What did he do to make him unworthy?! It seems like this is the issue where we should finally learn what was whispered into Odinson’s ear.

Action Comics #976 (DC Comics) – The end of the fantastic Superman Reborn arc! I loved this entire run so far and this arc has been so crazy it works.

Doom Patrol #5 (DC’s Young Animal) – This is one of the most fun and wacky comics out. I am obsessed with Nick Derrington’s art and wished he was drawing everything lately.

Black Hammer #7 (Dark Horse) – It has returned! One of the best comics out in the medium and written by one of my favorite writers, Jeff Lemire.

Dept. H #12 (Dark Horse) – Matt and Sharlene Kindt have been so consistently good on this book every month. I love this cover and I am excited to return to the deep and find out whodunit.

Top Pick: X-O Manowar #1 (Valiant) – I have the review copy sat on my desktop just waiting to be opened up and read again, but before I did that, I realized that this was honestly one of the few comics this week I’m looking forward to reading (again) when I pick it up i print so I can see the art without the watermark on it. I can’t wait to see it.

Hulk #4 (Marvel) – I read the first issue of this entirely by accident and immediately found one of my favourite new series. The tension you feel as Jen struggles to not change into the Hulk is palpable, and so well written. I don’t even need a villain in the series, I could read about Jennifer Walters living her life all day long.

Top Pick: Extraordinary X-Men #20 (Marvel) – The war between the X-Men and the Inhumans has come to an end, and the X-Men need to figure out their next move. I am very excited for the upcoming ‘ResurreXion’ event and looking forward to seeing the new paths the X-Men take.

Top Pick: Hulk #4 (Marvel) – This has been a great book from the start, showing that even a superhero can be shaken to their core after traumatic events.  Jen has definitely seen her share, from losing her cousin to almost dying by Thanos’ hand. This book is doing a fantastic job of showing her struggle to try and gain back her life while keeping her Hulk side at bay. If you aren’t reading this book, jump in now while it’s still early; you won’t be disappointed.

Invincible Iron Man #5 (Marvel) – I’ve been enjoying this book and getting to know Riri Williams.  It’s a fun book, seeing her being mentored by AI Tony Stark, and seeing her show him a thing or two in the process.  This issue should be fun as well, as various heroes are approaching her to join their teams but, of course, we’ll some villains tag along.  This should be fun.

Unworthy Thor #5 (Marvel) – Will Odinson just pick up the damn hammer already?!?!

Top Pick: The Torture Report: A Graphic Adaptation (Arcade Publishing) – On December 9, 2014, the Senate Intelligence Committee released a report condemning the CIA for its secret brutal torture during the Bush administration. This graphic novel summarizes and makes that important document understandable for individuals. The illustrations add poignancy to the facts.

The Circle #4 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – A solid teenage horror tale that mixes fantastic art with a creepy story.

Heathen #2 (Vault Comics) – The first issue was great, the second issue is somehow better. This is a fantastic new series from a relatively new voice in comics and definitely a unique spin on things. Two words: lesbian. vikings.

Powerless #1 (Vault Comics) – Everyone has powers, but a new disease takes away those abilities. A cool concept from the upstart publisher.

Terms and Conditions (Drawn & Quarterly) – R. Sikoryak has taken the iTunes Terms and Conditions and created a word for word graphic adaptation.

Black History In Its Own Words (Image Comics) – Criminally, I’m behind on Ronald Wimberly’s work, despite the fact that his recent Image Comics work, Prince of Cats (once a publication of Vertigo), has been making waves with its unique premise and gorgeous art. Black History In Its Own Words sounds like a great endeavor in the same effort as March, using the comics medium as a way to educate on important moments and figures in black history. We already know comics can be art, can be literature, but what about educational? Comics can be a teaching tool for reading and drawing, so it only makes sense it should take the next step in teaching all too important academia such as history, science, math, government, etc.

All-New Wolverine #17 (Marvel) – I’ve only read the first volume so far, but X-23 as the All-New Wolverine has one me over. She continues on the powerful themes of the original character, dealing with anger and finding more meaning in life than violence, while exploring her own unique personality. Most superhero comics have overdone action to the point that it’s no longer fun, but the creative team here manages to keep it so while not forgetting character development. Definitely one of the best among new Marvel titles.

Top Pick: Inhumans vs. X-Men #4 (Marvel) – This event has been a rock ’em sock ’em ride from the get go.  The X-Men are fighting for their survival and they are definitely not holding back.  The action has been non stop as the X-Men have taken out the Inhuman’s heavy hitters, but they may have underestimated the Nuhumans and their ability to push back. It’s only going to get more cut throat as this goes on and I can’t wait to see where this goes.

Jessica Jones #5 (Marvel) – When I started reading this title, I was a little annoyed that Marvel took Jessica back to her “darker” self, after everything that was established with her and Luke Cage.  But I have bee enjoying this title, and the last issue definitely cleared some things up for me.  I’m liking the set up of the “big bad” in this title and I am curious to see what the end game is.  I very good title that I recommend.

The Unworthy Thor #4 (Marvel) – Odinson is held prisoner on the Collector’s ship; a strange hammer within his reach, but the Collector wants the power for himself.  And to make matters worse, Proxima Midnight and Black Swan have crashed the party.  I’ve been enjoying this book, but really just want to see Odinson get his hands on this hammer already!

Justice League of America: Rebirth #1 (DC Comics) – I’ll be honest, the Rebirth titles I was reading didn’t hold my interest (though I do want to go back to Red Hood, Birds of Prey and Teen Titans as I lost track of them) but I am intrigued by the team line up of this book.  I read the Rebirth stories for The Ray and Killer Frost, which I enjoyed, and Black Canary and Vixen are favorites of mine, so I’m hoping this book can deliver.

Top Pick: Kingpin #1 (Marvel) – Matt Rosenberg has been of the best and most consistent writers lately. He has done some fantastic miniseries, and we get him on a big Marvel ongoing. Finally! With how he wrote the character on the CW2 miniseries, and it being the best thing to happen to that event, my expectations are through the roof for this book. Be excited.

Moonshine #5 (Image Comics) – This has been a solid and underrated book by Azzarello about mobsters, Appalachia, and werewolves. It is such an original tale that has packed an intriguing mystery about city slickers coming to the mountains with booze and blood involved.

Detective Comics #950 (DC Comics) – The oversized anniversary special that is priced at $3.99, that is a beautiful concept everyone should follow. I love this series, and James Tynion IV hasn’t let me down yet. I don’t expect him to anytime soon.

The Unworthy Thor #4 (Marvel) – It’s been so far so good for the return of Jason Aaron writing Odinson, and there’s only a few issues remaining. Will Thor get his original hammer? Or at least the ultimate version? Will he ride off into the sunset and allow Jane to remain the God of Thunder? I suspect a new ongoing. I can’t wait to find out.

The Flash #16 (DC Comics) – Finally the Rogues have returned! Josh Williamson has done a solid job with this series, but now that the Rogues have returned, it’s getting even better.

Top Pick: Ninjak #24 (Valiant) – This is the first time that Ninjak has been my top pick in a long time, if ever. Matt Kindt has always been consistent with his writing on the series, but with the last issue he kicked it up a gear, and I can’t wait to see where he takes us with this issue.

All-Star Batman #7 (DC Comics) – Scott Snyder and Jock gave me Batman #44, which remains one of the best issues of Batman I have ever read. Needless to say, I’m excited to get a whole story from these two.

Divinity III: Shadowman #1 (Valiant) – Honestly, this was a toss up between this and Detective Comics #950, with this issue coming out on top because of it’s relation to the main Divinity III miniseries. The more content  I can get from the Stalinverse, the happier I am.

Red Hood And The Outlaws #7 (DC Comics) – An unsung gem in DC’s line up, this darkly funny (whether it’s supposed to be or not) series has become one of the ones I look forward to the most each month.

Top Pick: Black History In Its Own Words (Image Comics) – Ron Wimberly takes us through a look at Black History framed by those who made it. As a white guy with a large gap in my knowledge, I’m looking forward to filling in some of that.

Black #4 (Black Mask Studios) – The series has been an interesting one, and while not perfect, each issue has been thought provoking with a depth not usually found in superhero comics.

Death Be Damned #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Seven outlaws have killed Miranda Coler and her family, but her death turned out to be a little less permanent than they expected. A western tale of revenge is exactly what I’ve been looking for.

Divinity III: Shadowman #1 (Valiant) – This latest “event” miniseries from Valiant has been absolutely amazing. Any opportunity to get more about this world, I’m excited.

The Fissure #1 (Vault Comics) – El Sueño, Texas was a single street town withering under the shadow of the Mexico-U.S. Barrier. Then the pavement split, and a massive crack spread from one end to the other, rapidly swallowing El Sueño whole. Young couple Avery Lee Olmos and Hark Wright fight to escape the mysterious sinkhole and the malevolent force that beckons from its depths. Writer Tim Daniel has kicked ass with these types of stories and this debut from Vault Comics is one I’ve had my eye on for quite some time.

Top Pick: A&A: The Adventures Of Archer And Armstrong #11 (Valiant) – The penultimate issue of a series that frequently had me laughing, I’m lookng forward to seeing how Rafer Roberts starts to wrap this crazy sixteen issue run up.

Deadpool The Duck #1 (Marvel) – I’m honestly expecting this to be a so-bad-it’s-awesome comic.

Faith #7 (Valiant) – Jody Houser has been consistently fantastic on this comic, and the revolving cast or artists have also been pretty damn awesome, too. This issue sees both the start of a new story and a new artist joining Houser and Marguerte Sauvage, Joe Eisma. I’m always excited to read this comic.

Old Man Logan #16 (Marvel) – I’ve been a fan of Wolverine since before I was a fan of comics, and this is one of the few Marvel comics I rush to get every Wednesday. Lately it hasn’t quite been as good as I want it to be… but this is a new year, and a new arc.

The Unworthy Thor #3 (Marvel) – Jason Aaron writes a redemption story for the Odinson, after he lost his hammer at the end of Original Sin, and I’m looking forward to seeing where he takes it – it already looks like Odinson won’t get his old hammer back (what with that being in the hands of Jane Foster), which was my main concern for this arc.

Top Pick: Wynonna Earp Legends: Doc Holiday #2 (IDW Publishing) – Doc’s enemies are coming out of the woodwork leaving Doc and Wynonna in one hell of a fight with Doc’s past.

Harley Quinn #11 (DC Comics) – The latest arc ( Joker Loves Harley) starts in this issue. All those little reminders that have been popping up in the last 10 issues are leading Harley into an elaborate plot courtesy of Mr. J. I see a love triangle brewing because I don’t see Red Tool giving up without a fight.

Big Trouble in Little China/Escape From New York #4 (BOOM! Studios) – Snake and Jack go undercover in David Lo Pan’s army.

Justice League vs Suicide Squad #3 (DC Comics) – Amanda drops a truth bomb and the battle rages on. I’m not sure who to root for but, I’m looking forward to seeing it all play out.

Old Man Logan #16 ( Marvel) – This rescue mission went all kinds of wrong and Logan finds himself back in the Wasteland.

DC Comics Bombshells #21 (DC Comics) – A glimpse into Cheetah’s past while the rest of the ladies search for more mechanical gods.

Top Pick: Blood Blister #1 (Aftershock) – A new series from Aftershock. That sentence has translated into some of my favorite comics of 2016 with Animosity, Shipwreck and more. Here’s hoping for another hit!

Batman #14 (DC Comics) – More Cat and Bat before we get to “I Am Bane”. I cannot wait to see what King has in store for their back and forth “relationship”, and the messes it will get them in.

Superman #14 (DC Comics) – It looks like we are finally going to be getting some answers soon with Mr. Oz, the other Clark in Action Comics and what everything from Rebirth means. This issue looks like it could be fun, and could start the ball rolling toward more answers.

The Unworthy Thor #3 (Marvel) – So far, so good for the limited series featuring Odinson trying to get his groove back. I am keeping an eye on this and see what will happen and what it will mean for Jane.

The Wicked + The Divine #25 (Image) – After another cliffhanger issue, I can’t wait to see if what I think happened, just happened. Such a great series.

Top Pick: The Unstoppable Wasp #1 (Marvel) – I’ve read the first issue and it’s just tons of fun. From the writing to the art, it’s hard to read this debut and not have a smile on your face. But, the comic not just is entertaining it also promotes kick-ass women in science with a cool feature in the letters page. It’s a great comic to kick off 2017.

The Fall and Rise of Captain Atom #1 (DC Comics) – I’ve dug what DC has done in recent years with the character and I was intrigued to see what this limited series would bring. Having read the first issue, it’s solid.

The Flintstones #7 (DC Comics) – Some of the best social commentary out there.

Justice League of America: The Atom #1 (DC Comics) –  I know nothing about the new Atom and since he’s a member of the new Justice League of America I’m looking forward to diving into this issue to get caught up.

Transformers: Optimus Prime #2 (IDW Publishing) – I love me some Transformers and watching not just the action but the politics that play out in this series focused on Optimus’ annexation of Earth has me even more excited.
