The Scorched #1 Sells Over 270,000 Copies

Todd McFarlane’s Spawn franchise made history in 2021 with the BEST YEAR OF SPAWN EVER, breaking several long-held comic industry records. The newest record includes massive sales for his newest monthly title, The Scorched #1. Sales for the book made it the “Biggest New Team Book” from the past 30 years (including a new relaunch of Marvel’s X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy), with more than 270,000 copies sold. This is the fourth, major record-setting 2021 new title for McFarlane, all records have been set in under six months, and this marks the most records ever broken by a comic franchise in a six-month period.

Kicking off the reign of records, McFarlane’s Spawns Universe #1 became Image Comics’ top-selling first issue of the 21st century. The sales of King Spawn #1 demolished The Avengers record, becoming the comic industry’s highest ordered monthly superhero launch of the 21st century. Gunslinger Spawn #1 was the biggest launch of a new superhero monthly title in the comic industry of the past 25 years. Gunslinger Spawn #1’s total sales are more significant than Marvel’s Spider-Gwen launch in 2015, and there hasn’t been another new character comic close to that number in the 20 years prior to its release.

Following suit with the record-breaking 2021 titles, Spawns Universe #1King Spawn #1Gunslinger Spawn #1, and now The Scorched #1 has become one of the top selling Image Comics books in the 21st century.

The Scorched #1 is the first all-new monthly issue of McFarlane’s superhero team book by writer Sean Lewis and artists Stephen Segovia and Paulo Sequeria. After 30 years of the longest-running monthly comic title SpawnThe Scorched gathers the best characters for three decades and puts them together into one title. McFarlane has also recruited some of the top talents in the industry for this inaugural launch.

The first issue’s initial characters in The Scorched #1 will include Reaper, Spawn, Redeemer, Gunslinger, Medieval Spawn, She-Spawn, and much more waiting in the wings.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Dark Ages #4

Wednesdays (and now Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Bad Kitty Meets the Baby (Roaring Brook Press) – Great graphic novels for kids that are full of lessons and funny enough parents will enjoy it too.

Batgirls #2 (DC Comics) – The first issue was kinetic fun. Fun being the operative word.

Daredevil: Woman Without Fear #1 (Marvel) – “Devil’s Reign” has been fantastic and this series focused on Elektra/Daredevil has us excited to see what this chapter brings.

Dark Ages #4 (Marvel) – This alternate world has been awesome so far. With technology/electronics on the fritz, the heroes must take on Apocalypse who might have an answer to the world’s problems.

Devil’s Reign: Superior Four #1 (Marvel) – Doc Ock in his “superior” phase has been great and it looks like we’re getting “superior” versions of well known characters from across the multiverse in his latest machinations.

Falconspeare (Dark Horse) – We’re Mike Mignola fans and love his comics, so an entire graphic novel by him and Warwick Johnson-Cadwell gets us to take notice.

Glam Prix Racers: Back on Track (Feiwel & Friends) – The first volume was My Little Pony meets Mario Kart for kids but we loved it too! We’re excited to check out the second race of the Glam Prix Cup on GLittergear Island!

Joe Hill’s Rain #1 (Image Comics) – Joe Hill’s novella gets a comic adaptation and we gave it a glowing review.

The Last Session #2 (Mad Cave Studios) – Friends get back together to finish their roleplaying campaign but a new player threatens to derail the experience.

Robin & Batman #3 (DC Comics) – Great story but it’s the jaw-dropping art that has us sucked in.

The Scorched #1 (Image Comics) – Todd McFarlane has been expanding his Spawn universe and we get our first team book!

Space Cadet #1 (Scout Comics/Scoot) – A young kid dreams of going to the Moon. One night he wakes up on the lunar surface! Luckily, there’s a friendly astronaut there to give a tour.

Sports is Hell (Silver Sprocket) – If you’ve never read Ben Passmore’s graphic novel, here’s your chance in a new printing with a new publisher.

We Ride Titans #1 (Vault Comics) – A dysfunctional family are the ones who pilot the Titan that protects New Hyperion from kaiju.

Maniacs, Legions, Hyperborea, and Debuts are this Week’s Comic Highlights

There’s a lot of comics that come out every week and we’re kicking off a new regular feature where we highlight some of the interesting comics and debuts coming each week!

Gunslinger Spawn #1 Sees a First Printing of 393,000 Copies

“The Year of Spawn” continues with Todd McFarlane‘s new titles from the Spawn mythology, setting three record-breaking sales in less than five months. The latest record to fall was set by Gunslinger Spawn #1 when it became the biggest launch of a NEW SUPERHERO MONTHLY title in the comic industry (all companies included) in the past 25 years with the first printing of 393,000 copies.

Gunslinger Spawn #1 total sales are bigger than Marvel’s Spider-Gwen launch in 2015, and there hasn’t been another new character comic close to that number 20 years prior to that.

McFarlane’s Spawn titles also hold the following records: Spawn’s Universe #1 (June 2021) was Image Comics’ top-selling first issue of the 21st Century with a print run of 226,000 (and has since had to additional printings).

Then King Spawn #1 (August 2021) sales demolished The Avengers record, becoming the comic industry’s highest ordered monthly superhero launch in the 21st Century with a print run currently over 520,000.

The Scorched #1 release in December is slated to break another industry record for a new superhero team book. After 30 years of mostly just a single monthly Spawn book, The Scorched will gather some of the most popular characters from the past three decades and put them together in one title.

Gunslinger Spawn #1 will be available at comic book shops (48 pages, full color, rated: Teen+, $5.99, premium 10 pt. cover stock) and on digital platforms, including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, and Google Play on Wednesday, October 20.

Todd McFarlane Announces Four New Titles Building His Own Shared Comic Universe

Image Comics‘ President Todd McFarlane has announced his attempt at creating his own multi-character, interconnected comic book universe. His stated goal is to establish a shared fictional universe over time in the vein of what the other comic industry giants, Marvel, and DC Comics, have accomplished with their comic book universes.

The announcement was given by McFarlane during a first look presentation at the Direct Market Retailers at the Annual ComicsPRO Conference.

The character Spawn, created by McFarlane, will be at the forefront of the initial launch of new titles, but the long-term goal is that Spawn will become but one of many characters that will succeed not only in the comics industry but in many mediums across the globe.

McFarlane will capitalize on the twenty-eight-year success story of Spawn, which has seen sales increase between 150 to 600% from pre-pandemic orders. The Spawn title currently is a top 5 monthly selling title on the Diamond Distributors Top 100 Chart. Recently, a new release of a Spawn figure on Kickstarter set a new Kickstarter record, in its category, for raising just under $3.5 million in 30 days. That figure was also recently awarded the prestigious People’s Choice 2021 Toy of The Year (TOTY) by The Toy Association, Inc.

As part of his announcement, McFarlane announced four new titles coming out in 2021, with three of them continuing as regular monthly titles, meaning that there will be an opportunity for fans of the Spawn character and his new expanding world to get their stories from it on a weekly basis instead of just twelve times a year.

In June, in what McFarlane is calling “2021 the year of Spawn,” comic retailers will be able to order Spawn’s Universe #1. This will be a book that will set the stage with a story that will then spill out into the other new monthly titles. The first title will release in August with a book called King Spawn #1. The character Spawn will now join the rare company of stalwart characters, like Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man, that will have multiple monthly books for the same title character. It will also mark the first time in twenty-eight years that anyone can buy a monthly issue #1 Spawn book. It gives McFarlane hope of reaching a new generation of readers that missed out on the initial launch of the Spawn back in 1992.

In October comes the second new monthly called Gunslinger Spawn. This title character has been a huge hit among the fanbase over the past year, and each of his appearances has garnered enthusiasm at the stores and online.

Finally, there will be a new #1 team book, which will band five characters together to fight against forces too big for any of them to take on alone. That book is titled The Scorched. Spawn, Redeemer, Gunslinger, Medieval Spawn, and She-Spawn begins the group’s adventures. However, McFarlane promises a rotating cast of heroes over the coming months to keep the roster of heroes fresh. He also said that he would be bringing in new major villains into the fold, too.

To lend a creative hand on some of this expanding list of titles, McFarlane has recruited an all-star list of comic book creators such as Art Adams, Jason Shawn Alexander, Carlo Barberi, Brett Booth, J. Scott Campbell, Greg Capullo, Donny Cates, Jim Cheung, Mike del Mundo, Javier Fernandez, David Finch, Jonathan Glapion, Kevin Keane, Aleš Kot, Puppeteer Lee, Sean Lewis, Sean Gordon Murphy, Ben Oliver, Stephen Segovia, Paulo Siqueira, Marc Silvestri, Marcio Takara, and Frank Quitely, as well as others he will be announcing in the coming months.
