Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

the bunker 1 coverWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in! Below are ten suggestions of comics, graphic novels, or trade paperbacks you should spend some extra time checking out and think about picking up.

Pick of the Week: The Bunker #5 and The Bunker Vol. 1 (Oni Press) – Joshua Hale Fialkov and Joe Infurnari have put together a time bending mystery that delves into fate, and destiny. Oni is giving you a chance this week to catch up by not only releasing the latest issue, but also the first volume too. This is easily one of the best comics on the market.

Harbinger: Omegas #1 (Valiant) – When it comes to comic universes, Valiant has one of the best out there. Simple to follow, able to hop in on any series you want, it’s planned, and a case study of what to do. This latest series is a hopping on point to see what the hype is all about.

Henry and Glenn: Forever and Ever TP (Microcosm Publishing) – The brilliant indie series skewers rock masculinity by seeing what would happen if Glenn Danzig and Henry Rollins were more than just bandmates. This collects all the releases so far.

Lazarus #10 (Image) – One of the best female lead comics on the market, as well as a brilliant look at class. It’s a dystopian future where the world is carved up between rich families and their corporations.

The Mighty Titan #1 (Red Anvil Inc.) – Imagine you had powers. Imagine that you can make a difference. Bullets bounce off you. You can fly around the world and back. Imagine more that no matter what happens, whatever challenges may rear their head, you and you alone have the power to stop it. Now imagine you were told you have cancer. How would you deal with it. The Mighty Titan is writer Joe Martino’s attempt at wrapping his cancer experiences in a Superhero shell.

Nailbiter #4 (Image) – I’m a fan of serial killer, murder mysteries. This one is creepy and a great read too.

She-Hulk #7 (Marvel) – Charles Soule’s take on the green giant mixes her superherodom with her want of starting up her own law practice. An amazing comic that’s also one of the best of the year. It’s unique, entertaining, fun, funny, in other words, buy it!

The Sixth Gun: Days of the Dead #1 (Oni Press) – Brother Roberto and Jesup will one day play important roles in the epic struggle to control the Sixth Gun. This is the tale that would shape these two–one an agent of the Knights of Solomon, the other a priest of the Sword of Abraham–into the men they will become. Writer Cullen Bunn expands his fantastic series with this spin-off.

Superior Foes of Spider-Man #14 (Marvel) – What happens when you take a bunch of C/D-list villains and give them their own series? Awesomeness! One of my favorite comics on the market right now. Always a fun read.

Thanos: The Infinity Revelation (Marvel) – Jim Starlin takes on one of his most famous creations in this original graphic novel.

Cloud 9 Comix Relaunch Their Boutique Digital Comics Publishing Platform

cloud 9 comixWith the tagline “New comics, New Talent, New Experience”, Cloud 9 Comix have re-launched their digital comic book publishing platform and have released their new iOS app that now supports both iPhones and iPads. Featuring a smaller, all-exclusive catalog, the new iOS app comes with a bundle of new features including a new panel-by-panel system creating a new reading experience; support for right to left languages such as Arabic; video channel offering trailers, promo videos and the own-produced Comic Book Storytellers web series. Additionally, all comics are now in full HD and look better than ever.

Along with some of their flagship titles such as Winter City, Dynagirl, Infinity, Intrepid, Sky Pirates of Valendo and Drago Bentley, Cloud 9 Comix have brought aboard new and fresh titles such as The Mighty Titan, Cosmos, Jinn Warriors, The Realmscape Wars, and others. The highlight of recent publications signed exclusively by Cloud 9 Comix is Black Salt from Ratti Entertainment who have just successfully reached their crowdfunding goal to shoot a short film based on the comic book series. Cloud 9 Comix have been busy producing their first very own series, Trail, an exciting new action adventure series by the company founder Ben Slabak, which is due for release mid-2014. Much focus has also been placed on growing the international content, with series Versus from Nigeria; Zeta, Atomica, Anima and Era Draconiana from Chile; and the entire AK Comics catalogue from Egypt, available both in Arabic and English. Kickstarter Spotlight – The Mighty Titan

JGM Comics is trying something new. It’s releasing it’s newest title on Kickstarter. Joe Martino’s new
book The Mighty Titan takes Joe’s cancer experience and wraps it in a superhero shell. From the Kickstarter page:

The Mighty Titan is my newest creation that essentially takes my cancer (and other) experiences and wraps them in a superhero shell. This isn’t autobiographical. I have researched and talked to other cancer survivors to try and get the feeling of what other people have experienced. The plan is to do a 5 issue mini-series with the possibility of it continuing. I created Titan in 2004 during my first bout with Kidney cancer. It was a tough decision to take some of my personal experiences and put them to paper in order to entertain and possibly allow people a glimpse of what some of us go through while battling this potentially deadly disease.

This is basically a pre-order engine for the new mini-series and has rewards that range from the first issue to original art from the book to even staring in the comic. The Mighty Titan is a 5 issue mini-series that boasts the talents of Luca Cicchitti, Cory Smith, Jeff Austin, Keith J. Betancourt and Johnny Lowe. Issue one has a cover by Jerry Ordway and is colored by Danielle Alexis St Pierre.
