No Time to Die Leads another $100 million Weekend Box Office

No Time to Die

It’s two weekends in a row that the weekend box office has totaled over $100 million. No Time to Die led the weekend with a little over $56 million. That’s on the lower end of Daniel Craig’s Bond run but not off from previous releases, especially with COVID still an issue. Casino Royale opened with $40.8 million in 2006, Quantum of Solace was $67.5 million in 2008, Skyfall opened with $88.4 million in 2012, and Spectre debuted with $70.4 million in 2015.

The film opened internationally the previous week and over the week also earned about $138 million over the week to bring the total to $257.3 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $313.3 million.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage dropped the expected amount with a decrease of 64.5% from the previous weekend. The film earned an estimated $32 million to bring its domestic total to $141.7 million. Internationally, the film added about $30.1 million to its total to bring that to $43.9 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $185.6 million after two weeks.

In third place was The Addams Family 2 which added a little over $10 million to its domestic total. It has now earned $31.1 million. The film has also grossed $4.6 million internationally. Its worldwide total is now $35.7 million.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings grossed $4.2 million domestically bringing that total to $212.5 million. The film also earned about $8.3 million over the week internationally and now has earned $189.1 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $401.6 million.

The Many Saints of Newark sunk in its second week as expected dropping 68.8%. The film grossed an estimated $1.5 million. It has now earned $7.4 million domestically. It also added $600,000 over the week internationally to bring that to $2.9 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $10.3 million.

In comic films…

Black Widow earned an estimated $12,000. Domestically, the film has grossed a little over $183.6 million. The international total has moved adding about $300,00 million over the week where it now stands at $195.5 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $379.2 million.

Old added an estimated $10,000. Domestically, the film has grossed just under $48.2 million. Internationally, the film stood at $41.9 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed a little over $90.1 million.

The Suicide Squad didn’t show up on the weekend chart and looks like it remained steady during the week. Domestically, the film has grossed $55.8 million. The film has also earned $111.6 million internationally. Worldwide, the film has grossed $167.4 million.

Initial numbers have 47 films earning $108,802,855 from 28,506 theaters. That’s about $20 million less than last weekend’s 51 films which earned $129,053,489 from 32,029 theaters. The average earning was $3,816.84 this past weekend, a little below the previous weekend’s $4,029.27.

Venom and Carnage Tear Apart the Weekend Box Office

Venom: Let There Be Carnage

Venom: Let There Be Carnage was a beast of a film opening with $90.1 million, the best domestic debut for a film this year. The opening shows good things for the franchise and the original film was not a fluke. That movie opened with $80.3 million in 2018 and went on to gross $856.1 million. That has the sequel out-performing the original even during the pandemic, an impressive debut. It should also have Sony excited that they’re heading in the right direction for their Spider-Man franchises and bodes well for the next film to release.

The film also debuted internationally where it grossed $13.8 million for a total of $103.9 million worldwide. We’ll see how the film holds up next weekend when it faces some competition.

Internationally, the winner for the weekend was No Time to Die, the latest James Bond film. Opening domestically next weekend, the film earned $119.1 million in its first weekend at the international box office.

Back here…

The Addams Family 2 debuted in second place with a little over $18 million. No international number was released. The first film opened with $30.3 million in 2019. But, without major kids competition, the film should do well this Halloween season.

In third place was Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The film dropped from last weekend’s first place once real competition entered the ring. The film grossed an estimated $6 million to bring its domestic total to $206.1 million. That makes it the top grossing domestic film of the year. The film also earned about $13.9 million over the week to bring its international total to $180.8 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $386.9 million where it has now moved into fifth place for the year.

The fourth place belonged to The Many Saints of Newark. The film also debuted on HBO Max and the word of mouth is generally not good. The Sopranos prequel earned an estimated $5 million domestically and $2.3 million internationally. With just $7.3 million, availability on HBO Max, and bad word of mouth, expect this one to see a quick death at the box office.

Rounding out the top five was Dear Evan Hanson which was second last weekend. The film grossed an estimated $2.5 million to bring that to $11.8 million. The film has not returned and international figures.

In comic films…

Black Widow came in at #16 with an estimated $26,000. Domestically, the film has grossed a little over $183.6 million. The international total has moved adding about $400,00 million over the week where it now stands at $195.2 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $378.8 million.

Old was #17 with an estimated $25,000. Domestically, the film has grossed just under $48.2 million. Internationally, the film stood at $41.9 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed a little over $90.1 million.

The Suicide Squad didn’t show up on the weekend chart but the film looks like it made about $200,000 over the week. Domestically, the film has grossed $55.8 million. The film added about $700,000 to its international gross bringing that to $111.6 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $167.4 million.

Initial numbers have 51 films earning $129,053,489 from 32,029 theaters. That’s almost $100 million more than last weekend’s 51 films which earned $38,699,520 from 34,852 theaters. The average earning was $4,029.27 this past weekend, a massive increase from the previous weekend’s $1,110.40.

Warner Bros. Shakes Things Up with Dueling Releases on HBO Max and Theaters for 2021

It was going to eventually happen but COVID has sped things up as Warner Bros. is making an earthshaking move when it comes to movie distribution. The studio will send 17 films to HBO Max for 31 days, to be released the same day as theaters.

Wonder Woman 1984‘s HBO Max and theater release on Christmas day was just the tip of the iceberg as more are to come.

The studio’s 2021 slate includes The Suicide Squad, The Matrix 4, Dune, Godzilla vs. Kong, and Space Jam: A New Legacy. Other films include Little Things, Judas and the Black Messiah, Tom & Jerry, Mortal Kombat, Those Who Wish Me Dead, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, In The Heights, Reminiscence, Malignant, The Many Saints of Newark, King Richard, and Cry Macho.

The decision will cause an uproar from theater owners who not only lose in this model but are struggling, and will struggle, to stay open due to the pandemic. The decision, according to reports, was not shared with exhibitors and was kept secret at Warner Bros. The studio will likely need to renegotiate with theater chains and offer up something so to as not completely lose their support.

But, something needed to be done. With a still unknown future and COVID vaccination likely to take most of 2021 the release schedule would be shaky and risky to rely just on theaters. Further delays would hurt the entire industry further creating a backlog of productions and likely cutting numerous projects as held up films would take up future release dates creating a ripple effect.

The films will roll at internationally as planned and the decision is focused on the US audience.
