Fantastic Beasts Had a Number 1, But Not a Fantastic Opening

fantastic-beasts-and-where-to-find-them-2016When is a $75 million number one weekend opening not something to go crazy over? When you’re the Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. That film earned an estimated $75 million to come in first place this weekend. That’s the lowest opening ever for the Wizarding World and the last film was five years ago. The average opening is a little over $90 million.

The film earned an “A” CinemaScore and it looks like 55% of the audience was over the age of 35 which would indicate it was likely older Harry Potter fans that showed up for the film and not younger fans.

The film opened Wednesday in international markets and has so far grossed $143.3 million.

In second place was Doctor Strange who was in first place these past two weekends. That film earned an estimated $17.7 million to bring its domestic total to $181.5 million. The film also earned $26 million to its international total to bring that to $390 million. We’ll have more analysis of that film and comic films this year in an hour.

In third was Trolls which earned an estimated $17.5 million, Arrival was fourth with $11.8 million, and Almost Christmas was fifth with $7.04 million.

Two new films debuted in the top ten. The Edge of Seventeen earned an estimated $4.83 million for seventh, and Bleed for This was eighth with $2.36 million.
