It’s Marvel’s World as Avengers: Endgame Smashes Records with $1.2 billion Worldwide

It was a given that Avengers: Endgame would win the weekend box office domestically and worldwide but the film has delivered numbers few predicted. Domestically, the film earned an estimated $350 million over its first three days. In five days, the film has earned $1.209 billion at the global box office. And, those numbers are likely to improve when the final ones are revealed.

The film’s $350 million debut is almost $93 million more than the previous record of $257.69 million set by Avengers: Infinity War last year. It’s also 90% of the market share with the film accounting for 4 out of 5 tickets sold this weekend domestically.

The critics and audience loved the film with it receiving an “A+” CinemaScore. That’s the third Marvel film to receive that score, along The Avengers and Black Panther. The audience was 57% male and 61% was 25 years of age or older.

Internationally the film crushed records too. It earned more than $400 million more than the previous record holder what was The Fate and the Furious. It’s also the fastest film to ever top $1 billion globally in just five days. It’s the 18th largest worldwide release ever and sixth largest worldwide release for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As the 22nd film in that franchise, Marvel has grossed over $19.8 billion worldwide of which nine of those films have earned more than $1 billion at the box office.

The film earned the largest opening in 45 markets and that includes the #1 opening day in China with $107. million and the largest five day in that market with $330.5 million.

The film is released in Russia today as the final international market.

But, that’s not all for Marvel’s success…

Captain Marvel received the expected boost coming in at #2 with an estimated $8 million three day weekend. The film has earned $413.6 million domestically. It also added $2 million internationally to bring its international total to $696.6 million and $1.110 billion worldwide.

In third place was The Curse of La Llorona which dropped 72% from the previous weekend earning an estimated $7.5 million to bring its domestic total to $41.3 million after ten days. Internationally it has earned $8 million to bring that to $45.7 million and $87 million worldwide.

Breakthrough dropped to fourth place with $6.3 million to bring its domestic total to $26.1 million.

The top five was capped off with another comic film Shazam! with an estimated $5.5 million and a domestic total of $131.1 million after four weeks. Internationally the film added $5.4 million from 80 markets to bring that total to $215.2 million and $346.3 million worldwide.

In other comic films….

Hellboy dropped to #14 with an estimated $355,000 to bring its domestic total to $21.5 million off of a $50 million budget.

The Curse of La Llorona Tops the Weekend Box Office as Shazam! Drops to Second

It was a horror mood for Easter weekend as The Curse of La Llorona beat expectations and topped the box office.The film earned an estimated $26.5 million domestically. The film received a “B-” CinemaScore from the audience which was 51% male and 60% of the crowd aged 25 or older. It received just a 32% by critics on RottenTomatoes and 41 on Metacritic.

Internationally, the film launched in 71 markets with an estimated $30 million for a $56.5 million worldwide launch. That’s impressive since the film had a budget of just $9 million and it has yet to open in the UK or Japan.

Shazam! dropped to second place after three weeks earning an estimated $17.3 million to bring its domestic total to $121.3 million. Internationally the film earned $22 million to bring its international earning to $201.5 million for a worldwide total of $322.8 million.

In third place was the faith-based film Breakthrough which earned an estimated $11.1 million over three days and $14.6 million over five days. The film also received an “A” CinemaScore and the audience was 65% was female and 70% were aged 25 and older. Internationally, the film is in its second weekend in 20 markets where it earned an estimated $2.8 million for an international total of $5.9 million.

In fourth place was Captain Marvel which saw an increase despite losing locations. It moved up from sixth place last weekend. It’s no doubt seeing a boost due to Avengers: Endgame which opens this week. The film earned an estimated $9.1 million to bring its domestic earning to $400 million. The film also added $6.5 million overseas to bring that total to $689.5 million for a worldwide total of $1.090 billion.

In fifth place was Little which dropped from second place earning an estimated $8.5 million to bring its domestic total to $29.4 million. Internationally, the film added $1.4 million to its total which is now $4.8 million.

In other comic films….

Hellboy dropped 67.8% from third place last weekend to #10. It earned $3.9 million to bring its domestic total to $19.7 million. With a budget of $50 million, the film is an absolute failure and needs a miracle to turn things around.
