Onward Scores a Weekend Box Office Win

Onward

Onward took first place at the box office in its debut weekend. The film earned an estimated $40 million. That’s on the lower end of expectations for the Pixar and Disney film which was expected to open with closer to $50 million.

The film earned an “A-” CinemaScore from opening day crowds and a 96% audience score on RottenTomatoes. The audience was 52% female with kids and parents making up 58% of the opening weekend crowd.

Internationally, the film earned an estimated $28 million from 47 territories. It will open mid-April for Korea, Italy, and Japan while releases in Australia, Turkey, Hong Kong, New Zealand, and Taiwan remain and a date yet to be set for China.

The Invisible Man dipped from last weekend’s first place coming in second with an estimated $15.2 million. The movie has earned $52.7 million after ten days and a budget of just $7 million. Internationally, the film added $17.3 million for an overseas total of $45.6 million.

The Way Back debuted in third place with an estimated $8.5 million. It too was on the lower end of expectations for the opening. The film received a “B+” CinemaScore with a crowd that was 53% female and 87% of the audience was aged 25 or older. The movie debuted in 14 overseas markets with an estimated $640,000 from 448 screens. The next key markets open in April.

Sonic the Hedgehog ran into fourth place with an estimated $8 million. Internationally, the film added $12 million. The film has earned $295.6 million worldwide after four weeks.

Rounding out the top five was The Call of the Wild which earned an estimated $7 million to bring its domestic total to $57.4 million. Internationally, the film added $4.8 million to bring that total to $42.1 million.

When it comes to comic films…

Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn came in at #8 with an estimated $2.2 million to bring its domestic total to $82.6 million.

My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising was #10 after last week’s debut at #4. The film added $1.5 million to its domestic total to bring that to $12.7 million.

Sonic the Hedgehog Continues to Take the Cross the Finish Line in First

Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog managed to outpace The Call of the Wild, which beat expectations, to take first place. The film held on to first for the second weekend in a row.

After ten days of release, Sonic the Hedgehog has earned $106.6 million after bringing in an estimated $26.3 million over the weekend. Internationally the film added $38.3 million to bring its foreign total to $96.5 million and a worldwide total to $203.1 million.

In second place was The Call of the Wild which earned $24.8 million. That beat expectation but the film’s budget is a reported $135 million making this an uphill fight for the film. The audience was a 50/50 split between men and women with 62% of the crowd aged 25 or older. Internationally, the film opened in 40 markets earning $15.4 million for a $40.2 million global opening.

Birds of Prey dropped to third with an estimated $7 million to bring the domestic total to $72.5 million after its third week. It also added $10 million internationally to bring that total to $101.2 million and $173.7 million.

Brahms: The Boys II edged out the competition to come in fourth with an estimated $5.9 million. With a “C-” CinemaScore and a 40% audience score on RottenTomatoes, the film should drop quickly. The crowd was 53% female and 56% of the crowd was under the age of 25. It also launched in 23 markets with an estimated $2.22 million.

Round out the top five was Bad Boys for Life with an estimated $5.86 million. The domestic total now stands at $191.2 million. The film also earned $8.1 million internationally to bring that total to $200 million and $391.2 million worldwide.
