The Revenant Comes Out on Top While Star Wars Moves up to Second

revenant-leoThe Revenant topped the box office this past weekend earning an estimated $16 million. The previous week it came in second. Star Wars: The Force Awakens moved up to second earning an estimated $14.257 million, and last week’s champ Ride Along 2 dropped to third earning an estimated $12.96 million. Three new entries filled fourth, fifth, and sixth place. Dirty Grandpa debuted with $11.525 million, The Boy earned $11.26 million, and The 5th Wave was sixth with $10.7 million.

The box office was down compared to the same weekend last year, and that may have been due to the blizzard hitting a lot of the East Coast.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is nearing $900 million domestically. After this weekend it has earned $879.3 million, and in foreign markets its earned $1.06 billion for a grand total of $1.94 billion.

While the film is the top domestic grosser (not adjusted) of all time, it still has a while to go to take that title worldwide. It currently sits at third and is about $247 million shy of moving in to second place. It’d need $849 million more to move in the top spot.
