Suicide Squad is #1 Three Weeks in a Row

Suicide SquadSuicide Squad was once again the top of the box office as new releases failed to ignite interest. The film earned an estimated $20.7 million, over $5 million more than the second place Sausage Party, which earned an estimated $15.3 million. The Suicide Squad has now earned $262.3 million domestically, $310.4 million in foreign markets, and $572.7 million worldwide.

Suicide Squad still has money coming its way. The film opened in Germany this past weekend and opens in Japan September 10. Its success has helped drive the August box office to a record high.

As I said, Sausage Party was in second place and the film has earned $65.3 million domestically after two weeks. Worldwide, the film has earned $71.3 million.

A trio of new films rounded out the top five. War Dogs debuted with $14.3 million; Kubo and the Two Strings earned an estimated $12.6 million, and finally the Ben-Hur remake earned $11.35 million.

In comic related movie earnings….

Captain America: Civil War continues to bring in money. The film added $93,000 to its domestic total bringing it to $407.7 million. The movie has earned $1.152 billion worldwide.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows added an estimated $61,000 to its domestic total over the weekend. The film has earned $81.9 million domestically and $239.3 million worldwide.

X-Men: Apocalypse continues to earn money at the foreign box-office. The film earned an additional $3 million over the last week.

Next week sees the release of the buzzed about Don’t Breathe, Mechanic: Resurrection, and Hands of Stone. It’ll be interesting to see if Suicide Squad battles off the competition and remain in the top spot once again.

Suicide Squad Remains #1 While Sausage Party is Strong

Suicide SquadSuicide Squad held on to first place this past weekend with an expected large drop after its first week. The film earned an estiamted $43.7 million and dropped 67.3%. The film had an estimated budget of $175 million and so far has earned $222.9 million domestically, $242.5 million in foreign markets for a total of $465.4 million worldwide after 12 days.

Sausage Party opened in 2nd and earned an estimated $33.6 million. That’s solid for the “R” rated animated film. The budget for the film is an estimated $19 million, so this is a definite success.

Pete’s Dragon came in third with an estimated $21.5 million. The film’s opening number is debatable as Disney has scored success with live action takes on animated classics. The opening is similar to The BFG which I’d label a misfire. We’ll see how much legs the film has.

When it comes to comic adaptations….

Captain America: Civil War earned an additional $174,000. The film sits at $407.5 million domestically and $1.152 billion worldwide. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows earned an estimated $100,000. Domestically the film sits at $81.8 million and $239 million worldwide. Finally, X-Men: Apocalypse opened in Japan. It earned an estimated $3.1 million to bring it’s worldwide total to $539.7 million so far.

Suicide Squad Assembles for an August Record

Suicide SquadSuicide Squad found success this weekend setting an August record with an estimated $135.1 million earned. With a budget of $175 million, the film also brought in $132 million its international release for a total of $267.1 million. That domestic total is $40 million more than the previous record. That total beats Guardians of the Galaxy which held the previous record of $94.3 million.

Other records broken includes the largest opening day in August with $65.2 million and the largest Thursday preview total with $20.5 million. The film’s international earnings came from 57 territories and its total of $267.1 beat Deadpool‘s $264.7 million in 63 markets.

The long term run of the film will be interesting as it has just 26% on Rotten Tomatoes as of this post, a B+ Cinemascore, and a 7.1 rating on IMBD. Expect a large drop next weekend and the tune of “success” to turn to “failure” in the media.

In second place was last week’s winner Jason Bourne which earned an estimated $22.7 million. Bad Moms earned an estimated $14.2 million to remain in third place. The Secret Life of Pets remained in fourth with an estimated $11.56 million. Finally, Star Trek Beyond dropped from second to fifth to earn $10.2 million. The film Nine Lives debuted this week to come in sixth with an estimated $6.5 million.

When it comes to comic adaptations, Captain America: Civil War added an estimated $203,000 to its total to bring its domestic amount to $407.2 million and worldwide to $1.151 billion.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows brought in an estimated $130,000 to bring its domestic total to $81.6 million and worldwide total to $237.1 million.

This coming weekend sees the opening of Pete’s Dragon, Sausage Party, and Florence Foster Jenkins.

After Nine Years Jason Bourne Tops the Box Office

Jason BourneJason Bourne was the top of the box office earning an estimated $60 million for the second best opening for the movie series. The Bourne Ultimatum was the best opening with $69.2 million in 2007. The film also earned an estimated $50.1 million for $110.1 million total. The movie had a reported budget of $120 million.

In second place was Star Trek Beyond which dropped from first. The film earned $24 million to bring its domestic total to $105.7 million. The film has a worldwide total of $160.5 million for its $185 million budget.

In third place was Bad Moms which debuted with $23.4 million. With a budget of just $20 million, that’s a solid debut and those behind the film must be very happy with the results.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows added $200,000 to its domestic total to bring it to $81.4 million. Worldwide the film has earned $236.3 million. The film is third for non-adjusted domestic earnings for TMNT films (fifth when adjusted). The film ranks second for worldwide but is far behind 2014’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle‘s $493.3 million.

Captain America: Civil War earned $74,000 to bring its domestic total to $406.9 million and worldwide total to $1.151 billion.

This coming week sees the opening of Suicide Squad which is expected to top the box office, it’s just a question as to how well it does. It’ll be the widest August release of all time and some say it’ll open over $100 million.

Star Trek Beyond Soars Into First

Star Trek BeyondIt shouldn’t be a surprise, but Star Trek: Beyond came in first this past weekend earning an estimated $59.6 million. the previous Star Trek: Into Darkness opened to $70.1 million. The film received positive reviews and got an A- from Cinemascore. It had a reported budget of $185 million.

Coming in second was The Secret Life of Pets with $29.3 million and third was Ghostbusters with $21.6 million.

Next up are new films, Lights Out which did really well with $21.6 million and Ice Age: Collision Course disappointed with $21 million.

In comic book related movie news, Captain America: Civil War continued to earn money with an estimated $108,000. The film has earned $1.151 billion so far.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows added $105,000 to its domestic total. The film has earned $81.074 million domestically and $235.2 million worldwide.

Secret Life of Pets Repeats while Ghostbusters Comes in Second

The Secret Life of PetsIt was a close race at the top of the box office this past weekend. The Secret Life of Pets came in first place earning an estimated $50.56 million in its second weekend. The film has domestically earned $203 million and $253.95 million worldwide. With a budget of $75 million, it looks like the film will turn a nice profit, so expect a sequel.

The biggest debut of the week, the reboot of Ghostbusters, came in second. The film earned an estimated $46 million. That total has the film meeting expectations and projections and is the best opening for director Paul Feig and Melissa McCarthy. It also earned $19.1 million from three major territories and a few others. The big test now is to see how long its legs are with a budget of $144 million.

In third place was The Legend of Tarzan which earned an estimated $11.1 million, fourth was Finding Dory with an estimated $11.04 million, and fifth was Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates with an estimated $7.5 million.

In comic movie news X-Men: Apocalypse added an estimated $265,000 to its domestic total to bring that to $154.97 million. The film has earned $378.89 million in foreign markets for a worldwide total of $533.86 million. The film may pass 2000’s X-Men as far as unadjusted domestic earning. That film earned $157.3 million. When it comes to adjusted domestic earnings the film also may pass First Class which earned $156 million. Worldwide (unadjusted), the film sits in third and will not be overtaking Days of Future Past to come in second.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows added $260,000 to its domestic total. The film has earned just $80.85 million domestically, $150.3 million in foreign markets for a total of $231.15 million worldwide. The film is far short of 2014’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles which earned $493.3 million worldwide.

Captain America: Civil War is a winner for Marvel and it added $181,000 to its domestic total. The film has earned $406.58 million domestically, $744.4 million in foreign markets and $1.15 billion worldwide.

Next weekend sees the release of Star Trek Beyond which should definitely top the box office. Also Lights Out opens and the film has buzz. The x-factor is Ice Age: Collision Course, and with animated films dominating this year, don’t count this one out.

The Secret Life of Pets Opens with a Record and Dory Finds the Top

The Secret Life of PetsThe Secret Life of Pets topped the box office with an impressive estimated $103.17 million. That’s a record opening for an original animated film. It’s the sxith animated film ever to open with more than $100 million. The film should also do well with an A- CinemaScore. The film also opened in nine territories and has an international total of $42.6 million.

The Legend of Tarzan opened in second barely beating out Finding Dory. The film earned $20.6 million. Finding Dory was third with $20.35 million. Tarzan did have a budget of $180 million so its opening is a bit iffy. The film did have a good word of mouth, so its possible it might have some legs. Finding Dory now stands domestically at $422.58 million making it the top grossing domestic film of the year so far.

In other new films, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates outperformed its expectations bringing in an estimated $16.6 million to come in fourth.

When it comes to comic book adaptations….

X-Men: Apocalypse added $390,000 to its domestic total which now stands at $154.5 million. The film has earned $528.2 million worldwide.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows added $325,000 to its domestic total which is currently $80.4 million and worldwide it’s $219.9 million.

Finally, Captain America: Civil War added $310,000 to its domestic total to bring that to $406.2 million. The film has earned $1.15 billion worldwide.

This coming weekend sees the release of the new Ghostbusters film which likely will top the box office.

Dory Finds a Threepeat

finding dory posterFinding Dory was the top of the box office this past weekend making it three weeks in a row. The film earned an estimated $41.9 million domestically. In its three weeks, the film has earned $372.3 million. Worldwide, the film has earned $538.3 million.

A trio of new films followed Dory.

The Legend of Tarzan opened in second earning an estimated $38.1 million  which is much for than the $20 million it was expected to earn. Folks must be happy with its performance.

In third was The Purge: Election Year which brought in an estimated $30.9 million. With a budget of just $10 million, folks are probably popping the champagne. That’s better than the second film of the series and due to a solid word of mouth. Expect a fourth film.

Finally, The BFG came in fourth with an estimated $19.6 million. With a $140 million budget and Steven Spielberg’s name attached, this can only be seen as a disappointment.

In comic book movie news, X-Men: Apocalypse added another $940,000 to its domestic total. The film has earned $153.5 million domestically and $528.95 million worldwide. The film sits in third as far as worldwide earnings for “X” films but seventh in domestic gross.

Captain America: Civil War earned an estimated $771,835 to bring its domestic total to $405.4 million. Worldwide the film has earned $1.149 billion and is currently the top grossing film of 2016 so far.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows earned an estimated $765,000. The film has earned just $79.5 million domestically and $188.7 million worldwide. With a budget of $135 million, it’s hard to call this anything but a disappointment.

Next week sees the opening of The Secret Life of Pets which should give Dory a run for her money, but we’ll see!

Finding Dory Wins Again as Independence Day Doesn’t Resurge

finding dory posterFinding Dory topped the box office again bringing in an estimated $73.2 million to bring its domestic total to $286.6 million after two weeks. The film currently has earned $396.9 million worldwide.

The film has the eighth largest second weekend of all-time beating this year’s Captain America: Civil War which had $72.6 million.

Newcomer Independence Day: Resurgence earned an estimated $41.6 million. The estimated $165 million film has to be considered having a disappointing opening. It was also saddled with poor reviews so expect a much worse second weekend. The original film had an opening of $50.2 million 20 years ago and went on to earn $817.4 million.

In other new films, The Shallows opened in fourth bringing in an estimated $16.7 million and Free State of Jones was far behind in fifth with an estimated $7.8 million.

In comic movie related films, X-Men: Apocalypse added an estimated $2.5 million to its domestic total. The film has now earned $523.8 million worldwide. The film is third (unadjusted) when it comes to worldwide totals for “X” films. This year’s Deadpool is first.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows added an estimated $2.4 million to its total. That film has earned $153.9 million worldwide so far.

Finally, Captain America: Civil War continues to earn and added $1.4 million to its total. That film currently has earned $1.15 billion worldwide.

Next weekend’s holiday weekend should be interesting with some high profile openings and we will see if Dory can three-peat.

Finding Dory Tops the Box Office Breaking Records

finding dory posterFinding Dory topped the box office this weekend earning an estimated $136.2 million continuing Disney’s dominance at the movies this year. It’s the largest opening weekend for an animated feature. Finding Nemo earned $70.2 million when it opened in 2003.

The film earned an “A” CinemaScore with an audience that was 45% male and 55% female, 65% made up by families and 32% 12 and under.

The film also has the largest single day and opening day for an animated film with $54.9 million, though that includes $9.2 million from Thursday.

The film also earned an estimated $50 million in 29 international territories for a total of $186.2 million.

In second place was Central Intelligence with an estimated $34.5 million, a respectable opening for the film.

In comic related film news…. X-Men: Apocalypse added $5.21 million to its domestic total to come in sixth. The film has now earned $510.1 million worldwide. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows added $5.2 million to its total as well to come in seventh. That film stands at $142.7 million worldwide. Captain America: Civil War crosses the $400 million mark and stands at $401.3 million after bringing in an estimated $2.3 million at the domestic box office.

Next weekend sees the opening of Independence Day: Resurgence. Expect that film to top the box office.
