Cover Art featuring Tula Lotay

STK693917People warn not to judge a book by its cover. Sometimes the cover deserves its own discussion.

This week’s pick burns brightly upon the racks, drawing even the passing eye to the radiant work of Tula Lotay. Lotay’s vibrant colors have adorned books like Supreme: Blue Rose, The Wicked + The Divine and Curb Stomp. This week her talent is featured on the latest issue of Slash & Burn, the tale of a recovering pyromaniac turned investigator. “My editors Jamie Rich and Molly Mahan at Vertigo gave me an outline of the story and a few ideas for what they wanted,” Lotay explains. “I just took it from there.”

The story follows Rosheen, a young woman straddling her responsibilities to the fire department and her darker appetites. Deeply sexual, very much alive and always attempting to stay in control, Rosheen lends herself perfectly to the passion and vulnerability typical of Lotay’s work. “I wanted something to feature sexiness and romance, the comic is a bit steamy, so I wanted the cover to interpret that. There is also an element that the main character, Rosheen, is not quite sure what is happening, who to believe, so I wanted the reverse down cover to reflect that, it can be viewed right way up or upside down.”

Above, we’re lucky enough to see Lotay’s process as she combines watercolors, inks and digital media to layer together a textured and engaging piece. “I’m pretty happy with this cover, I hope it creates a sense of intrigue, and makes people wonder, ‘who are these characters?’ There’s a sense of danger there with the lighter, a naked frame that could light something, both the characters are coming from different places which is also reflected in their different positions.”

Slash & Burn #3 hits stands this week. Make everyday a little better by following Tula Lotay on Instagram and Twitter, and check out her some of her work at her website.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Storm_1_CoverWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in! Below are ten suggestions of comics, graphic novels, or trade paperbacks you should spend some extra time checking out and think about picking up.

Top Pick: Storm #1 (Marvel) – Thief. Goddess. Headmistress. Queen. The X-Man called Storm has always defied a single title. And her desire to better the world has never been limited to only her own kind. On a mission to foster goodwill and safeguard the mutant race’s continued existence in her own way, Storm will travel the globe, confronting man and mutant, god and monster and everything in-between. She will overthrow tyrants, quell tsunamis and strive to see her dream for the world realized. She is Storm, a hero like no other….and the skies will tremble at the sight of their namesake.

The character has never had an ongoing series, it’s about time! Marvel continues to expand the diversity of the characters fronting their comics, and with this, there’s not a better choice of a character to do it with.

Afterlife With Archie #6 (Archie Comics) – Archie’s horror series picks up after a little bit of a break. One of the best surprises of the year!

Letter 44 #8 (Oni Press) – Six months into the presidency, President Blades has deployed sci-fi superweapons to end wars in the Middle East, opening him to attacks from all sides, including a Congressman once romantically linked with the First Lady. Meanwhile, in space, as construction on the alien Chandelier is finally completed, the crew of the Clarke will truly understand what they’re facing.

Ragnarok #1 (IDW Publishing) – Walter Simonson is known for his fantasy, especially his work on Thor. Some think it was a definitive take on the character. He returns to that genre with a new series from IDW.

The Shadow Hero (First Second) – In the comics boom of the 1940s, a  legend was born: the Green Turtle. He solved crimes and fought injustice just like the other comics characters. But this mysterious masked crusader was hiding something more than your run-of-the-mill secret identity… The Green Turtle was the first Asian American super hero.

The comic had a short run before lapsing into obscurity, but the acclaimed author of American Born Chinese, Gene Luen Yang, has finally revived this character in Shadow Hero, a new graphic novel that creates an origin story for the Green Turtle.

Skullkickers #29 (Image Comics) – Consistently one of the most entertaining comics on the market from the uber-talented Jim Zub.

Supreme: Blue Rose #1 (Image Comics) -Warren Ellis reintroduces the central image comics character. Should be interesting.

Transformers Vs. G.I. Joe #1 (IDW Publishing) – The two properties collide harking back to the classic 80s comics.

Trees #3 (Image Comics) – Another series from Warren Ellis explores mysterious pillars that have cropped up around the world. What do these alien artifacts mean or want?

Winterworld #2 (IDW Publishing) – Chuck Dixon’s cool comic that looks at survival in a bleak winter world. Think Snowpiercer, but outside the train.

Warren Ellis Pens Supreme: Blue Rose in July for Image

You are not dreaming.
We are trying to communicate with you.
Local reality has been reinstalled.
Things have gone wrong.
The revision has corrupted.
Finding Ethan Crane is your supreme priority.
We are speaking to you from the ultimate bunker within the structure of multiversal time.
Do not trust Darius Dax.
We are all going to die.

Warren Ellis teams up with Tula Lotay to re-introduce the central Image Comics character in Supreme: Blue Rose, coming this July from Image Comics.

In a release Ellis said:

One day I woke up with an idea, that came out of nowhere, for how to extend this most strange and storied of ‘analogue’ properties into a new space. A new floor on top of Alan Moore and Rob Liefeld’s house. And, since I had some time on my hands that year, I emailed Image, and we got my friend Tula Lotay involved—and her work will be a revelation to people.

Supreme: Blue Rose #1 arrives in stores on 7/23, and will be available for $2.99. It can be pre-ordered with Diamond Code MAY140571.
