Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Amazing Spider-Man #25 (Marvel) – Marvel’s teasing some big stuff in this one, so don’t miss out Spidey fans!

Daughters of Snow and Cinders (Fantagraphics) – Fleeing the fires of her war-torn homeland, a young woman travels to the New World in search of gold to rebuild her life.

Disney Villains: Scar #2 (Dynamite) – The first issue was fantastic filling in some of Scar’s unknown story from The Lion King.

Dog Knight Vol. 1 (Feiwel & Friends) – Frankie is saved from a friendly golden retriever from bullies and wakes up in a giant doghouse and tasked to prove they posses the six dog virtues of loyalty, kindness, honesty, justice, stubbornness, and smell.

Extreme Venomverse #1 (Marvel) – It’s the Summer of Symbiotes and this is a small piece of that big puzzle that’s going on.

Gatsby (AWA Studios) – A new take on the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel.

Ghostlore #1 (BOOM! Studios) – We’ve all heard of ghost stories… but what stories do the ghosts themselves tell us? Ghosts telling ghost stories? Written by Cullen Bunn with art by Leomacs? Yeah, we’re in.

Green Lantern #1 (DC Comics) – It’s a new status-quo for the Lanterns, Hal Jordan, and John Stewart and it’s a fantastic start.

The Nasty #2 (Vault Comics) – The first issue was an interesting spin on the horror genre about a group of kids wanting to save their video store and going to make their own scary movie.

Samurai Doggy #6 (AfterShock) – The series has been an entertaining story but it’s the visuals that have us really excited to check out each issue.

Something Epic #1 (Image Comics) – Outside our perception, creative thought takes physical form, with only a handful of individuals known as Epics able to interact with this wondrous hidden world. It sounds like an intriguing idea and we’re excited to see how this one plays out.

Spirit World #1 (DC Comics) – From the pages of Lazarus Planet: Dark Fate, a new Chinese hero emerges who’s able to travel to and from the Spirit World, the realm of the dead, and that of the living. We’re always excited to check out new heroes and ideas.

WildC.A.T.s #7 (DC Comics) – The series has been a wild ride that fans of the characters should enjoy and this latest issue begins to lay out the conspiracy as we’re not sure who we can trust.

From the pages of Lazarus Planet: Dark Fate, a new Chinese hero emerges who’s able to travel to and from the Spirit World, the realm of the dead, and that of the living. Their name is Xanthe, and their superpower is being able to burn items folded from joss paper and immediately turn them into real objects, based on the East Asian practice of burning joss paper at graveyards in order to send resources to ancestors in the Spirit World…except Xanthe can retrieve those items in the world of the living! Their weapon of choice is a large broadsword (because who doesn’t love a big sword when you can choose to use a big sword?!). Xanthe is a master of the dark arts who’s here to give Constantine a run for his money…literally. When Constantine shows up saying Xanthe scammed him into buying something, he finds them and Batgirl Cass Cain fighting an abnormal influx of jiangshi (Chinese hopping vampires) and joins in to help. But when a portal opens up that drags Batgirl into the Spirit World, it’s up to Xanthe and Constantine to travel to the land of the spirits to rescue her! Who knows what other spirits we’ll find in the Spirit World-like that skateboarding boy wearing hanfu with some headphones and a gaping hole in his chest?!

DC reveals its Pride-themed variant covers

Throughout its line of monthly comic books, DC will highlight Pride-themed variant covers on series that feature queer characters in regular and lead roles. Dawn of DC delivers three new superhero series, City Boy, The Vigil, and Spirit World, in May

“Dawn of DC” is this year’s initiative from DC Comics featuring new series, new creative teams, and new characters all-together! In May, the comic publisher will release three new six-issue limited series each featuring Asian superheroes. Check out the solicits below!

Spirit World #1 (of 6)

First seen in Lazarus Planet: Dark Fate #1, Spirit World features Xanthe, a non-binary Chinese hero with the ability to travel in and out of the Spirit World – the realm of the dead, and that of the living. Xanthe possesses the ability to burn items folded from ceremonial joss paper and turn them into real objects that can be used in the physical world. Their super power is based on the East Asian custom of burning joss paper at gravesites to send resources to ancestors in the spirit world. In this debut issue, written by Alyssa Wong with art by Haining, Xanthe forms a reluctant alliance with DC’s bad boy of the mystic arts, John Constantine, to rescue Batgirl Cassandra Cain from a horde of jiangshi (Chinese hopping vampires). Haining provides both the main and 1 in 50 ratio variant covers, additional variant covers by Dustin Nguyen and Trung Le Nguyen, plus a special AAPI Heritage Month variant cover by Zu Orzu.

This mysterious team of South Asian metahumans made their first appearance in Lazarus Planet: Next Evolution #1 and can be seen again in issues #1070 and #1071 of Detective Comics. Written by Ram V, with art by Lalit Kumar Sharma, The Vigil is Arclight, Saya, Dodge, and Castle, a group of individuals given powers they didn’t want, determined to stop metahuman research and tech created for military applications at any cost. Along the way, they’ll encounter super heroes that could be allies or enemies, not a surprise for a group that exists to shut down state-sponsored superhumans…and clean up the mess before any hero or villain arrives, as if both the crime and The Vigil were never there. Artist Sumit Kumar provides the main cover, with variant covers by Mukesh Singh and series artist Lalit Kumar Sharma and Anand RK, with Pop Mhan providing a special AAPI Heritage Month variant.

Both DC and WildStorm fans have already been introduced to Korean super hero Cameron Kim, a.k.a. City Boy, in the WildStorm 30th Anniversary Special #1 and Lazarus Planet: Legends Reborn #1. Cameron is just a kid trying to make a living, using his powers of speaking to cities to find lost and hidden goods to pawn, just trying to get by. But having these powers also means that he hears everything about these cities, everywhere and all at once, including their histories and the truths behind them. In his two current appearances he’s already made “friends” with Gotham City (including a rat avatar made from the city’s scraps), but only time will tell if City Boy is received as openly by Metropolis, Amnesty Bay, Themyscira, or other cities in the DC Universe. This six-issue series reunites writer Greg Pak with artists Minkyu Jung and Sunny Gho, and the debut issue features a main cover and 1 in 50 ratio variant cover by Minkyu Jung, and additional variant covers by InHyuk Lee and Michael Choi, with an AAPI Heritage Month variant cover by Alexandre Tefenkgi.
