Mockingjay Part 2 Stays in First for Third Week

mockingjaypostersmallThe Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 was in first place this past weekend for the third week in a row. The film earned $18.6 million to bring its domestic total to $227.1 million.

The film fought off some competition that came close to toppling it. Krampus debuted and brought in an estimated $16 million. With a budget of $15 million, that’s a solid debut.

Other new films Chi-Raq and The Letters didn’t do as well. Chi-Raq was in 13th place earning an estimated $1.25 million and The Letters earned $802,000.

For the rest of the top five, Creed was in third earning an estimated $15.54 million, The Good Dinosaur was fourth at $15.51 million, and Spectre was fifth with $5.4 million.

Mockingjay Holds on to First with The Good Dinosaur and Creed Performing Well

mockingjaypostersmallThe Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 held on to first place in its second week at the box office. The film added an estimated $51.6 million to its domestic total. The film has earned $198.3 million in two weeks and $440.7 million worldwide. The film dropped 49.7% from its first week, making it the only Hunger Games film to drop less than 50%.

Two movies debuted this past week coming in second and third, and a third debuted coming in at number 12 for the weekend. The Good Dinosaur came in second and earned $39.2 million, while Creed debuted in third with $30.1 million. Victor Frankenstein was dead on arrival, earning $2.35 million. The Good Dinosaur did well for the time period it opened, but compared to other Pixar films, it didn’t do so well.

The Good Dinosaur and Creed bumped Spectre to fourth with $12.8 million and The Peanuts Movie to fifth with $9.7 million.

Mockingjay Breaks $100 million in Debut Weekend

mockingjaypostersmallThe Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 topped the box office with an estimated $101 million. That’s the fifth movie to open above $100 million this year. The film opened $20 million below the first part though. Of course people are calling the film a flop due to that lower opening, even though it was still above $100 million. There’s much debate as to the reason for the “lowish” opening.

Worldwide the film earned $247 million, which is $27.8 million behind Part 1’s $273.8 million. It is a bit apples and oranges comparison due to the film opening in different territories.

Spectre continued to earn, coming in second this weekend and bringing in an estimated $14.6 million. It has earned $153.7 million domestically in the three weeks its been open.

The Peanuts Movie came in third and brought in an estimated $12.8 million to bring its total to $98.9 million in three weeks.

Two new films were fourth and fifth. The Night Before was fourth bringing in an estimated $10.1 million, and fifth was The Secret in their Eyes which earned $6.6 million.

In other geeky films, Minions added $111,930 after 20 weeks.

Spectre Stays on Top and Crosses $500 million Worldwide

Spectre PosterSpectre remained at the top spot at the box office as it faced little competition in new films this week. The latest Bond film earned $35.4 million over the weekend bringing its domestic total to $130.7 million in its second week. The film is dominating overseas. It earned an estimated $48 million in China, and if true, that’s the largest opening weekend and largest opening over three days of all time for any 2D US film. Skyfall earned $49 million for its entire China run. All together the film is close to $550 million worldwide at this point.

The Peanuts were second for the weekend adding $24.2 million to its total bringing the film to a total of $82.5 million domestically after two weeks.

As far as new films, Love the Coopers did best bringing in $8.4 million and coming in third. The 33 was fifth, earning $5.85 million. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo debuted in eighth and brought in $2.4 million. And finally, My All American was twelfth and earned $1.392 million.

In geek related films Minions added $151,410 to its total after 19 weeks at the box office. Jurassic World added $75,210 to its impressive total.

Box Office Bounces Back with Bond and Peanuts

Spectre PosterAfter two disappointing weeks in a row, the weekend box office rebounded with a strong weekend due to two films in particular. The weekend was led by SPECTRE which earned an estimated $73 million in its first week. It was followed by The Peanuts Movie which earned an estimated $45 million.

That helped boost the weekend by 6% compared to the same weekend last year, and a 148% increase from last weekend.

SPECTRE was the second highest opening for a Bond film. 2012’s Skyfall was the top one and earned $15.3 million more. So far, the film has earned $296.1 million worldwide.

The Martian dropped to third, and earned $9.3 million, and Goosebumps moved to fourth and earned $7 million.

In other geeky movies, Minions earned $190,680 and Ant-Man added $185,000 to its total. Jurassic World is out in Blu-ray, but still added $112,590.
