Spider-Man: No Way Home Takes the Weekend Box Office and Crosses $1 Billion

Spider-Man: No Way Home is officially the top-grossing film worldwide in 2021 so far with a staggering $1.054 billion. It’s the first film to cross the $1 billion mark since the pandemic began.

The film was the top of weekend box office dropping 68.7% from the previous weekend but still grossing an estimated $84.5 million. Domestically, the film has grossed $467.3 million at the domestic box office so far.

Internationally, the film earned about $252.9 million over the week to bring that total to $587.1 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $1,054,431,855. It is now #19 in all-time domestic earnings (not adjusted for inflation) and #38 worldwide.

Sing 2 debuted in second place with an estimated $23.8 million over the weekend raising its earnings so far to $41 million. Internationally, the film has also grossed $24.8 million. Worldwide, the film ahs grossed $65.8 million.

The Matrix Resurrections opened in what has to be a disappointing third with an estimated $12 million over the weekend. The film has grossed $22.5 million since it opened domestically. Internationally, the film also grossed $47.3 million for a worldwide total of $69.8 million. The film also opened simultaneously on HBO Max and it’s unknown what the viewership was for the streaming service and we can only guess the impact on the theater total.

The King’s Man was another debut with an estimated $6.4 million over the weekend. It has grossed $10 million since the film opened earlier in the week. Internationally, the film also grossed $6.9 million delivering an opening of $16.9 million worldwide.

American Underdog rounded up the top five and was another debut. The film grossed $6.2 million over the weekend and has no international gross so far.

In comic films…

Eternals is still grossing at the box office with a few weeks before it debuts on Disney+. The film added $218,000 to its domestic total to bring that to $164.5 million. It also added a little at the international box office to lift that to $236.2 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $400.7 million.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage earned an about $100,000 over the week. The film has grossed $212.5 million domestically. Over the week the film has grossed $2.8 million at the international box office to bring its total to $288.5 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $501 million worldwide.

My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission didn’t chart and its domestic total has remained just under $9.8 million. Internationally, the film looks like it gained a little with $31.2 million and its worldwide gross just over $41 million.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘ domestic gross remained around $224.5 million. The film also looks like it gained about $300,000 at the international box office where it stands at $207.7 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed just over $432.2 million.

Black Widow has ended its domestic run. Domestically, the film has grossed a little under $183.7 million. The international total stands at $196 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $379.6 million.

Old looks like its run has completely ended. Domestically, the film has grossed $48.2 million. Internationally, the film stood at $41.9 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed a little over $90.1 million.

The Suicide Squad has ended its run at the box office. Domestically, the film has grossed $55.8 million. The film has also earned $111.6 million internationally. Worldwide, the film has grossed $167.4 million.

Initial numbers have 21 films earning $144,983,807 from 33,134 theaters. That’s a about a 50% decrease from last weekend’s 38 films which earned $282,928,044 from 25,261 theaters. The average earning was $4,375.68 this past weekend, less than half from the previous weekend’s $11,200.19.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife Captures the Weekend Box Office

It shouldn’t be a big surprise but Ghostbusters: Afterlife took the top of the weekend box office with an estimated $44 million. The film also grossed $16 million at the international box office for a worldwide debut of $60 million. The film has generally had a positive from audiences while critics have been mixed.

The original Ghostbusters debuted in 1984 with $13,578,151 about $36.1 million in today’s dollars. It also had a budget of $30 million which is just under $80 million in today’s dollars. Ghostbusters: Afterlife has a reported budget of about $75 million. So, compared to the original, the numbers aren’t so bad for this relaunch.

The 2016 Ghostbusters reboot opened with $46,018,755 which is about $53 million in today’s dollars. That had a budget of $144,000,000 which is about $166 million today.

Ghostbusters II debuted with $29,472,894 in 1989 which is about $65.7 million today. That film had a budget of about $25 million, around $55.8 million in today’s dollars.

We still have have a bit to go to see where Ghostbusters: Afterlife ends but as far as opening, the film is one of the more successful films, with a moderate budget by today’s standards. If it has some legs, expect sequels to spin out of it but there’s still some time to see how it does. No matter, Sony should be happy with the relaunch of the property and its debut.

In second place was Eternals which dropped from last weekend’s first place. It earned an estimated $10.8 million to bring its domestic total to $135.8 million. Over the week, the film grossed around $37.7 million to bring its international total to $200.3 million. The film has grossed $336.1 million after three weeks.

Clifford the Big Red Dog slipped one spot to come in third place. The film grossed an estimated $8.1 million to bring its domestic total to $33.5 million. No international total has been returned.

King Richard debuted in fourth place with an estimated $5.7 million. It also grossed $2.5 million internationally for a worldwide gross of $8.2 million.

Dune rounded out the top five dipping from last weekend’s third place. The film grossed an estimated $3.1 million to bring its domestic total to $98.2 million. It also grossed $10.8 million internationally over the week to bring that to $268.9 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $367.1 million.

In comic films…

Venom: Let There Be Carnage slipped out of the top five to come in sixth. It earned an estimated $2.8 million. The film has grossed $206.5 million domestically after eight weeks. Over the week the film has grossed $9.4 million at the international box office to bring its total to $248.2 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $454.7 million worldwide.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings grossed an estimated $52,000 to bring its domestic total to $224.5 million. The film also grossed about $700,000 at the international box office where it now stands out $206.8 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $431.3 million.

Initial numbers have 47 films earning $83,118,450 from 30,225 theaters. That’s a decent increase from last weekend’s 37 films which earned $69,724,432 from 29,898 theaters. The average earning was $2,749.99 this past weekend, an increase from the previous weekend’s $2,332.08.

Shang-Chi Takes the Box Office with a Labor Day Record but Short of Black Widow’s Debut

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings easily took the weekend box office setting a Labor Day weekend record… but all is not perfect. The film earned an estimated $75.4 million over the three day weekend and is projected to earn between $83 and $90 million over the four days. The previous weekend best was Rob Zombie’s Halloween which earned $30.5 million in 2007. The film also earned $56.2 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $127.6 million.

Where things can be debated is whether the “theater only” strategy paid off for Disney and Marvel Studios.

In July, Black Widow debuted with $80.4 million domestically and $78 million internationally. In both of those measurements that film did better than Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings but it also debuted on Disney+ for an extra $30 plus subscriptions and reportedly generated an additional $60 million. That offer wasn’t available for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. So, did the film miss out on revenue?

What can be argued is that the lack of a Disney+ didn’t boost box office receipts like theaters might have expected. Black Widow so far is the top opening film of the year and Shang-Chi is second beating F9 by about $1 million. Theater owners will argue the lack of digital release did help to boost Shang-Chi‘s debut due to the record setting weekend. But, when it comes to “origin” films, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is on the lower end of Marvel Cinematic Universe debut earnings with only The Incredible Hulk, Ant-Man, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Thor lower. And, when adjusted for inflation only Ant-Man is lower with The Incredible Hulk being close with $70.3 million. Disney likely lost out on money by not releasing the film on Disney+.

What really needs to be watched is the film’s second weekend and if it sees a massive drop-off like Black Widow though the two are very different in reviews with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings receiving much higher reviews from both critics and the audience. It’s possible a positive word of mouth will soften the second weekend drop. What’s clear is that audiences are being picky about what they see in theaters in the age of COVID. Studios need to be much more strategic for the next year in deciding what to release only in theaters and what to dual release on-demand.

In second place was Candyman which dropped 52% from its debut weekend. The film earned an estimated $10.6 million to bring its domestic total to $39.1 million. Internationally, the film earned about $5.7 million over the week to bring that to $10.9 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed a little over $50 million after two weeks.

Free Guy slipped one spot to third earning an estimated $8.7 million. Domestically, the film has grossed $91.9 million after four weeks. Over the week the film added an impressive $47.1 million to bring that to $147.4 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $239.3 million.

PAW Patrol: The Movie grossed an estimated $4 million to bring its domestic total to $30.3 million. $12.5 million was added to its international total over the week to bring that to $50.3 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $80.6 million.

Rounding out the top five was Jungle Cruise which added a little under $4 million to its domestic total. It now has grossed $105.6 million. Its international total stands at $86.9 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $192.5 million.

In comic films…

The Suicide Squad came in at #8 with an estimated $905,000. Domestically, the film has grossed $54.4 million. The film added $16 million to its international gross to bring that to $108.1 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $162.5 million.

Black Widow came in at #9 with an estimated $748,000. Domestically, the film has grossed $182.5 million. The international total has held steady at $189.6 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $372.1 million.

Old was #12 with an estimated $470,000. Domestically, the film has grossed $47.3 million. Internationally, the film added about $500,000 to its total over the week to bring that to $38 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $85.3 million.

Initial numbers have 45 films earning $110,438,478 from 30,852 theaters. That’s around $45 million more than last weekend’s 51 films which earned $61,351,651 from 37,222 theaters. The average earning was $3,579.62 this past weekend, over double the previous weekend’s $1,648.26.
