Peter Panzerfaust #7, featuring Tiger Lily, Gets 2nd Printing

Since the announcement that Peter’s arch-nemesis, Captain Hook, would make his debut in the Image Comics/Shadowline title Peter Panzerfaust by Kurtis J. Wiebe and Tyler Jenkins, the issues have been flying off the shelves. The issue with Kapitan Haken’s first appearance, #8, has received a second printing that will be in stores on February 27. And now copies of the preceding issue have landed in the hands of readers eager to learn about Peter’s backstory, necessitating a second printing of #7, which features the introduction of Tiger Lily. The second printing of Peter Panzerfaust #7 (DEC128267)will be in stores on March 6.

Peter Panzerfaust #9 will be on the shelves February 13. The first five issues of the series, which reimagines the Peter Pan mythology in a World War II setting, are available in a trade paperback, Peter Panzerfaust Volume One: The Great Escape.

Storm Dogs #1 and Comeback #1 for free!

Two acclaimed Image Comics miniseries are getting free first issues! The debut issues of two Image Comics science fiction miniseries, Storm Dogs and Comeback, are now free at comiXology and on the Image Comics digital site and app. The two issues have sold out in print at the distributor level.

Storm Dogs by David Hine and Doug Braithwaite has been hailed for its sophisticated depiction of an alien world, futuristic technology, and taut procedural mystery story. The issues I have read are solid and it’s definitely worth checking out the first issue, even if it wasn’t free.

Storm Dogs #2 was in stores on December 5 and continued the roll of positive reviews. Issue #3 will be in stores on January 16, 2013.

Comeback is a stylish time-travel thriller by Ed Brisson and Michael Walsh, published under Image Comics’ Shadowline imprint. It’s another example of the excellent comics Image has been publishing this year.

Comeback has also continued its great reception with the release of its second issue on December 19.

Education for Assassins in Five Weapons

When the world’s deadliest, stealthiest, and most infamous assassins need a place to educate their children, an institution that respects and upholds their values, they turn to the prestigious School of Five Weapons. At the setting of the new Image Comics/Shadowline mini-series by Jimmie Robinson, Five Weapons, students train in the martial arts, pledging their loyalty to one “club”: Knives, Staves, Archery, Exotics, and Guns.

The School of Five Weapons is turned upside down when a new student arrives, one carrying a name that all the students and teachers know: Shainline. The clubs vie for Tyler’s loyalty, but it becomes apparent very quickly that this kid isn’t someone who is easy to pin down. Tyler has just the edge he needs to succeed at Five Weapons — a razor-sharp mind!

Robinson writes and draws Five Weapons, and his clean, lively art is colored by Paul Little. The mini-series has the same mischievous tone as Robinson’s series Bomb Queen but was created for a wider audience, as the “T” (teen) rating indicates.

The showdowns are epic, the secrets are dark, and Five Weapons is insanely fun. The first, 32-page issue can be pre-ordered from the December issue of Previews and will be in stores on February 27.

Dear Dracula Gets Animated!

Dear Dracula, a graphic novel for kids published by the Image Comics imprint Shadowline, has been adapted into an animated feature for Cartoon Network. The hour-long feature will air on October 16 at 7 p.m. (ET, PT) as part of Cartoon Network’s “Spooky Specials” Halloween programming.

A scarily sweet story of a young boy named Sam who loves horror films and vampires so much that he writes to Dracula for Christmas instead of Santa Claus, Dear Dracula was written by Joshua Williamson and drawn by Vicente “Vinny” Navarrete. Sam gets an unexpected reply to his letter when Dracula himself shows up on his doorstep, ready to make Sam’s dream of being a vampire come true.

Giving voice to Dear Dracula is a cast of well-known Hollywood veterans as well as breakout young actors:

Ray Liotta as Dracula
Nathan Gamble (Dolphin Tale) as Sam
Ariel Winters (Modern Family) as Emma
Emilio Estevez as Renfield
Marion Ross (Happy Days) as Grandma

The DEAR DRACULA animated feature is produced by Kickstart Productions, with a screenplay by Brad Birch.

Dear Dracula by Joshua Williamson and Vicente “Vinny” Navarete is a 48-page, full-color hardcover graphic novel for $7.99. Its ISBN is 978-1-58240-970-2.

Kurtis J. Wiebe Receives Shuster Award

Image Comics and Shadowline‘s Kurtis J. Wiebe was named Outstanding Comic Book Writer by the Joe Shuster Awards for his work on his series Green Wake and The Intrepids.

Wiebe was named the winner of the Shuster Award on September 15 in a ceremony in Montreal, Quebec. Named after Superman’s co-creator, the artist Joe Shuster, the award recognizes outstanding work by Canadian comic book creators. The judges noted that Wiebe “was selected primarily for his work on the profound and affecting Green Wake.”

Published by Jim Valentino’s Image Comics imprint Shadowline, Green Wake is a murder mystery set in a dream-like town where the residents forget their pasts and no one ever leaves. The art is by Riley Rossmo, who is also the artist on the Wiebe-penned Debris and co-writer and artist on Rebel Blood.

Wiebe has spoken about the very personal nature of the series, which he created while going through a divorce. “When I won the [Shuster] award for that series it made me realize that this series, despite its early end… had profoundly affected those that read it,” he said. “It mattered to them. That’s a huge victory to me and made it very worthwhile to struggle through the writing process which was, really, a grieving period in my life.”

Green Wake encompasses ten issues and is collected into two trade paperback volumes.

Wiebe is one of Image/Shadowline’s most prolific creators. His other Shadowline titles include Grim Leaper, Peter Panzerfaust, and Debris.
