Rat Queens, the Animated TV Series

RatQueens_01_CVR_FINAL_smIt is being reported by Variety that Kurtis Weibe and Roc Upchuch‘s comic series Rat Queens is being adapted into an animated television series courtesy of Weta Workshop‘s Pukeko Pictures and Heavy Metal. The plan is the develop the comics into a 30 minute show, and then pitching it to TV networks.

The fantasy series features an all female team, and is a popular series, breaking out with a solid female fan base, leading an explosion of such comics to the market. The series is published by Image Comics‘ partner Shadowline.

This is the second series of Weibe’s to be adapted. His other Image comic Peter Panzerfaust is being adapted by BBC Worldwide. Heavy Metal is also producing that.

Artists from Rat Queens and Peter Panzerfaust swap covers

The August releases of two bestselling Shadowline series written by Kurtis J. Wiebe, Rat Queens #8 and Peter Panzerfaust #21, will feature covers by each other’s artists. Additionally, a special retailer incentive cover B diptych by Michael Avon Oeming will be available for both books.

Rat Queens artist Roc Upchurch will draw Cover A for Peter Panzerfaust. “Being a Peter Panzerfaust fan, I jumped at the chance to do a Wendy cover,” said Upchurch. “This is, by far, the best incarnation of Wendy Darling to date. I hope I did her justice (though, I probably did not).”

This twenty-first issue begins a new story arc for the series, providing a perfect opportunity for fans of Upchurch’s Rat Queens work to try out this series as well. Together at last, Peter, the Darlings, and the remaining Lost Boys embed themselves in the dangerous heart of Paris. With the Hook hot on their heels, it is only a matter of time before they are discovered. But as ever, Peter is not without a plan!

Peter Panzerfaust artist Tyler Jenkins will draw cover A for Rat Queens. “As far away from anything I get to draw on a regular basis and easily the most fun I have had doing almost any cover,” said Jenkins. “These characters seriously Roc(k).”

In this issue the Rat Queens continue their blade-swinging snark in part three of “The Far Reaching Tentacles of N’Rygoth.” And this time, enemies better watch their backs.

Peter Panzerfaust #21 will be available on 8/13 for $3.50 and can be pre-ordered using Diamond Code JUN140493. Rat Queens #8 will feature a wrap-around cover, will be available 8/6 for $3.50, and can be pre-ordered using Diamond Code JUN140495. Retailer incentive cover B by Oeming for PPeter Panzerfaust #21 can be pre-ordered with Diamond Code JUN140494. Incentive cover B for Rat Queens #8 can be pre-ordered with Diamond Code JUN140496.

Humans are an endangered species in The Superannuated Man

Ted McKeever introduces a chilling dystopia in The Superannuated Man, the first of a six-issue miniseries from Shadowline.

By the time most people realized it, they were no longer in charge of the world we know. In an unspecified future, the small seaside town of Blackwater has now been taken over by advanced and mutated animals. Most of the humans that lived there are now either dead or gone, but one old man remains—a man called HE—who scavenges off the scraps and refuse of humanity’s past on the outskirts of Blackwater, and doggedly defies the new tenants.

HE lives a life of solitude in Blackwater is a seaside town bordered by a carbon sea of inky blackness, and populated by animals that have been mutated for reasons connected to the sea.

McKeever has revealed:

But it’s the animals who are threatened by something they do not understand completely. And for years, there has been a growing inferiority tone of indifference and distrust towards him because of his aloof and self-sustaining ‘humanity. He is the unknown. An outsider who refuses to join in. He will not conform to their rules. And what they can’t understand, or bend to their ways, they will crush.

The Superannuated Man #1 arrives in stores on 6/4, and will be available for $3.99.

Love Stories (To Die For) Aims Straight For Your Heart

One comic. Two stories. One shared theme: love in the face of death. A group of savage Vikings in 946 A.D. are pitted against a band of equally-savage vampires to protect a monastery from invasion in “Bloodlust: Deceiver of the Gods.” Thousands of years later in the far-flung future, a man fights his way through an alien-infested space ship in an attempt to return to his wife and escape to safety in “Symptom of the Universe.” Written by Dirk Manning and drawn by Rich Bonk and Owen Gieni, respectively, Love Stories (To Die For) #1 is a full-color one-shot 48-page flip book published by Image Comics/Shadowline that hits stores on September 4 for $4.99.

Love Stories (To Die For) #1 features two full-length stories in one attractively-priced flip book with two covers, one on each side. Both tales explore the intersection of love and life, death and hope, and what happens when a person is forced to choose between one or the other. One man must fight his way through vicious monsters in order to return to the love of his life. Another must fight vampires alongside his men while pursuing justice.

Love Stories (To Die For) #1 arrives in stores on September 4 and can be pre-ordered now from the July issue of Previews (JUL130432).

Preview: Rat Queens Brings the Booze and Brawls in September

They’re not your typical band of high fantasy adventurers: Hannah the Rockabilly Elven Mage, Violet the Hipster Dwarven Fighter, Dee the Atheist Human Cleric, and Betty the Hippy Hafling Thief. These women are the stars of the new Image Comics/Shadowline series Rat Queens, and they’re the deadliest grog-guzzling, death-dealing, battle-maidens-for-hire in Palisade.

In this new series by Kurtis J. Wiebe and Roc Upchurch, starting in September, the Rat Queens are taking on the quest of a lifetime… or at least the quest that’s going to get them out of the latest jam they’ve found themselves in: clearing out some pesky goblins from a cave. But these aren’t just any goblins, and Hindman Cave isn’t just any cave.

Wiebe described the project in an interview with IGN:

I suppose it’s obvious at this point that this is a love letter to my years of Dungeons and Dragons and fantasy but tweaked ever so slightly with a modern twist. Rat Queens is a title I’m super excited about. This is a series I’ve wanted to write for years but never felt quite ready to do it.

Wiebe met his collaborator on Rat Queens, Roc Upchurch at Comic-Con in 2011.

Upchuch adds:

A fantasy setting with female leads is pretty much the dream for me, so I’m having the time of my life with Rat Queens. Creating these characters was both fun and challenging. The girls have very different personalities, so I wanted them to have very distinct and unique costumes to reflect that. The world itself is so fun to draw. I want this to be a place that fans of fantasy would want to live in with characters that they would want adventures with.

Rat Queens webcomic by Wiebe, Dejmal, and Upchurch will run each week on the Image Comics tumblr until the release of the first issue on September 25.

Rat Queens #1 — including a special variant edition with a cover by Saga artist Fiona Staples — can be pre-ordered now from the July issue of Previews (Diamond Code JUL130404).
