Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

loveislove-coverWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Brett

Top Pick: Love is Love (IDW Publishing) – A response to the tragic Pulse shooting, this anthology brings together hundreds of creators all to benefit Equality Florida and the victims of the tragedy. This is a chance to be entertained and touched by a comic and for your dollars to benefit a good cause. More of this, please!

G.I. Joe #1 (IDW Publishing) – It feels like forever since we had a regular G.I. Joe comic series and this new one spinning out of Revolution gives the Joes an interesting new world to play in that feels like it’s the logical progression from all of those Transformers/G.I. Joe comics of the past. I’m excited to see where it all goes and what the Joes look like in this new world.

Soviet Daughter (Microcosm Publishing) – Any other week this would be at the top of my list. This graphic novel follows two stories. Lola who lived through the Bolshevik revolution, civil war, Stalinist purges, and the Holocaust. She taught herself to read and worked as a secretary for the NKVD (which became the KGB) and as a lieutenant for the Red Army. Alos her great-granddaughter Julie who’s coming of age in an immigrant family in Chicago and her political awakening in the midst of the radical politics of the turn of the millennium. Sounds amazing.

Supergirl: Being Super #1 (DC Comics) – A new limited series from Mariko Tamaki and Joëlle Jones that looks like a fantastic coming-of-age story perfect for fans of the tv series… really anybody.

Tomboy #9 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – Are you reading this series? If not, you’re missing out. It’s a vigilante superhero-ish/horror series starring a teenage girl possessed and out for revenge against the people who killed her friend… and she sees ghosts.

Shay

Top Pick: Love is Love (IDW Publishing) – A tribute to those affected by the Orlando shooting brings the comic book community together with proceeds going to a good cause. Buy it, read it, give it to friends. Love trumps hate!

Batgirl #6 (DC Comics) – Batgirl might not be making it home after all thanks to an attack on her plane home courtesy of Poison Ivy.

Harley’s Little Black Book #5 (DC Comics) – Harley Quin vs Superman and an alien run style Fight Club-esque battle royale. Shut up and take my money!

Justice League vs Suicide Squad #2 (DC Comics) – A continuation of the good guys versus the “good guys” storyline. I’ve got popcorn and can’t wait to see how it all plays out.

Hulk #1 (Marvel) – Jennifer Waters, tries going back to a normal life after the Civil War, whatever that means when you’ve got a Hulk waiting to break free inside of you.

Brik #6 (Oni Press) – The story of a boy, living in a Russian Mob run city in Yonkers, and him Golem closes out its story arc and it’s so good, you’re going to be hoping that the end of this arc isn’t the end of this story!

Joe

Top Pick: Love is Love (IDW Publishing) – I have been so excited for this book since it was announced. It’s a beautiful anthology project by some of the most talented people in the medium, and the proceeds go to the families of the Orlando Pulse victims. Sometimes our medium makes me sad, but moments like this, it makes me happy.

AD: After Death #2 (Image) – The second part of the three part half comic half pride by Snyder and Lemire. If this issue is nearly as good as the first issue, I’ll be satisfied. I do hope we get more answers to what curing death means, but this series is worth the art and writing alone.

Seven To Eternity #4 (Image) – Like Kost Remender books, this series has kept me on my toes. What I thought would be a slow burn quickly turned everything on its head in the last issue. Can’t wait to see what happens next.Rocket Raccoon #1 (Marvel) – Its finally here! Another Rosenberg comic and another one in the Marvel universe. After his work on CW II: Kingpin, and 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank, the sky is the limit for this writer. What a fun character to write about in Rocket. I am very excited for this.

Rocket Raccoon #1 (Marvel) – It’s finally here! Another Matthew Rosenberg comic and another one in the Marvel universe. After his work on Civil War II: Kingpin, and 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank, the sky is the limit for this writer. What a fun character to write about in Rocket. I am very excited for this.

Hulk #1 (Marvel) – I love the Dekal covers, and I cannot wait to see Jen Walters state of mind after the Civil War II Banner, Rhodes, and her in a coma situation. She seems like she is going to be extra angry, which means extra hulky. A raging lawyer with uncontrollable outbursts? Yup!

Alex

Top Pick: Divinity III: Komander Bloodshot #1 (Valiant) – The first issue of Divinity III blew me away. I’m all in for this series now, and I can’t wait for this.

All-Star Batman #5 (DC Comics) – After last week’s dismal Batman #13, it’s going to be lovely to get my hands on a comic by one of my favourite Batman writers.

AD: After Death Book Two (Image) – The first book caught me completely off guard with it’s mix of prose-like narrative and whimsically illustrated comic pages. It’s no surprise that the story has already had the screen rights snapped up.

Savage #2 (Valiant) – Tarzan meets dinosaurs. That’s literally why I’m pumped for this.

Bestselling Seven to Eternity Rushes Back to Print

Review: Seven to Eternity #3

seven-to-eternity-3Seven to Eternity #3 continues the story of the Osidis family and their legacy. In the last issue, just as Adam was about to hear the God of Whispers offer, a group of wild characters called the Mosak entered to bring the fight to the God of Whispers and his Piper. This issue gives us some great action, with some fantastic fight scenes with swords, magic, and more. This book truly feels like a great fantasy tale, and I always feel like the world is going to open up more and more with each issue. Thankfully, this issue doesn’t disappoint in that area. Rick Remender loves to keep his readers on their toes and has shown before that he will kill main characters, as he often does. That gave me a sense of anxiety while I was reading this book, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I enjoyed flipping each page and wondering what awaits me. That’s what you get in a Remender tale.

We get an important flashback to Adam’s youth and a sad look at his brother Peter, who was very ill. We learn more about Zeb as a father, and while the story told us so far that he was stubborn and wouldn’t budge on much, we do see some vulnerability here when he admits he will do anything to save his son. Things come full circle as we learn that the same group who appeared to fight the God of Whispers are the same people who turned Adam and his family away, leading to a heartbreaking scene in his past. When we flashback to the present, you see why Adam is reluctant to work with the very people who didn’t help him when his family needed it most. But times are tough, and he soon learns he will need all the help he can get.

Jerome Opeña on art is near flawless again as he draws the limb flying, dinosaur stomping, flute playing action scenes. This series is going to be awesome to have in trade, just to be able to spend more time with Opena’s art alone and see how everything comes together in a bigger volume. I love all of the crazy character designs from the dinosaur with a portal in his mouth named Drawbridge, to Healer Monkey, and the amazing looking Piper conjuring his demons. This is some of the best art Opena has ever done, and I am glad that issue three continues that trend. Matt Hollingsworth does a great job on color and gives the world and most of the characters a dirty and depressed look, which fits the tone of the story perfectly.

Seven to Eternity is only three issues in, and I feel like while some big things have happened, the best is yet to come. I truly have no idea where this story is going, and I love that. Remender once again keeps the reader guessing and on edge with this book, and like his other comics, you cannot wait to see where it goes next.

Joe

Top Pick: Seven to Eternity #3 (Image) – The first two issues told a lot of story in such a short time. More comics could learn from this. The first issue set up the legacy of the family name and the big bad, and the second introduced us to him and then a whole new band of characters. Let’s see what Remender has planned for the third issue! So far this series has been awesome.IVX #0 (Marvel) – Death of X did not fully satisfy me, but the surprise ending did. Let’s hope this series is a lot better, as it is leading us into the new Inhuman and X-Men titles coming this spring. I am hopeful that Lemire and Soule come through big here for this event and get people excited for what’s to come.

IVX #0 (Marvel) – Death of X did not fully satisfy me, but the surprise ending did. Let’s hope this series is a lot better, as it is leading us into the new Inhuman and X-Men titles coming this spring. I am hopeful that Lemire and Soule come through big here for this event and get people excited for what’s to come.

Great Lakes Avengers #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was so fun and goofy, and I loved it. The art by Robson is fantastic, and the jokes by Gorman worked well. The entire premise is ridiculous and it just makes it better. This isn’t even a b level team of Marvel heroes, but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable of a premise. I highly recommend this if you’re looking for something light and fun.

Batman Annual #1 (DC Comics) – DC is bringing in all of the bat writers on the annual. I usually don’t get very excited for annuals, but I am for both this and Superman hitting the same day. This book will have Snyder, King, Dini, Orlando, and Scott Wilson writing with Riley Rossmo and Neal Adams on art. I am hyped!

saga40-01-covSaga #40 (Image) – If you haven’t read Saga yet, please go start. This is what is arguably the best comic out today. I am eager to see where Vaughn and Staples takes us this issue, as we follow these incredible characters on their wild adventures. This book can make you laugh, cry, and smile all in one issue.

Alex

Top Pick: Savage #1 (Valiant) – I can sum up why this is awesome in three words: Tarzan meets dinosaurs. It also looks savagely brilliant.

Batman Annual #1 (DC Comics) – Paul Dini and Scott Snyder writing Batman all in one book? Sounds ideal.

Conan The Slayer #5 (Dark Horse) – A consistent story that not enough people are talking about. If you’re a fan of sword and sorcery then you owe it to yourself to check this out.

Old Man Logan #14 (Marvel) – It’s been awhile since I enjoyed a solo Wolverine series as much as I have been enjoying this. A new arc starts this issue, and I’m pretty excited to dig in.

Revolution #5 (IDW Publishing) – A left field surprise for me; I can’t wait to see how this epic crossover ends.

Brett

copra_round_four_cover_bergen_streetCOPRA Round Four (Bergen Street Press) – If you haven’t been reading Michel Fiffe’s series you’re missing out on some of the best comics out there. The indie series is collected here in the fourth trade and it’s worth every penny. The series is best described as an indie Suicide Squad and it’s absolutely awesome. This is the only series I buy single issues and the trades.

Fish Eye #1 (Scout Comics) – The publisher has been putting out some fantastic comics and this new series is well worth checking out. The concept is about a cop who is on a reality show whose ratings are slipping and he has to protect his family from a group of killers. Sounds interesting!

The Skeptics #2 (Black Mask Studios) – The first issue was solid taking place during the Cold War and featuring con-men pretending to be psychics to fool the US government. It’s a crazy concept but the style and characters have me coming back and been looking forward to this one.

Inhumans vs X-Men #0 (Marvel) – I’m a sucker for Marvel’s events and this first issue is pretty solid. It catches up new readers while also setting up some new stuff as well.

The Revisionist #6 (Aftershock Comics) – Time traveling entertainment and I seriously have no idea where it’s all going. With an 80s action film flair, this is one to read from the beginning, it’s so good.

Seven to Eternity Burns Through Printings

Image Comics has announced that Seven to Eternity #1 and #2 will both be rushed back to print in order to keep up with increasing customer demand. The epic new sci-fi/western series written by Rick Remender, drawn by Jerome Opeña, and colored by Matt Hollingsworth has gone back to print multiple times since its launch.

In Seven to Eternity readers meet The God of Whispers—a dark tyrant who has spread an omnipresent paranoia to every corner of the kingdom of Zhal. The God of Whispers’ spies hide in every hall spreading mistrust and fear. Adam Osidis, a dying knight from a disgraced house, must choose between joining a hopeless band of magic users in their desperate bid to free their world of the evil God, or accepting his promise to give Adam everything his heart desires.

Review: Seven To Eternity #2

seventoeternity02_coverartaSeven To Eternity #2 continues the story of the Osidis clan, as well as giving us some history between Adam’s father Zeb, and the God of Whispers. Like most Rick Remender books, I’m never sure where the story is going to go. That’s a good thing. I’ve often referred to him as the king of the gut punch, but he’s also very good at character development. Every time I read one of his books, I always find the characters interesting, and believable within their world. This book is no exception. We are only two issues in, but already I am wondering what Adam will do to protect his family, and how it will affect the Osidis legacy. Remender can flat out craft a tale, and he’s building another great one here.

This issue does a good job of building suspense with each page. As the story progressed, I was wondering what Adam would do now that he is finally face to face with the God of Whispers. The fantastic art by Jerome Opeña and colors by Matt Hollingsworth definitely help build the kingdom of Zhal. Whether we are seeing the back story of Zeb, or the lair of the God of Whispers. Even if this book didn’t have Remender writing it, and thankfully it does, the art is still something special to look at.

It was great to get a peek at why the Osidis name is judged so harshly in this world, and why they were living so far away from society. Zeb is a badass and it is great to see more of him, even if it is only through flashbacks. I feel like we know a lot about him in such a short time. What kind of man he was, and how much pride meant to him. It seems to me that he was a much different man than his son, and that’s okay. I find it very interesting that we don’t know a lot about Adam yet, except that he will protect his family at all costs. As of right now it would seem that Adam fights with his head, while Zeb fought with his heart. I think this story is a lot about family. It isn’t just a fantasy epic, even though it is an excellent one so far. It’s a story about legacy, and what it means to stand up against something you know is wrong, no matter what.

We get some new and interesting characters and a great fight sequence to show their powers off. It would seem Adam and the Osidis clan are not the only ones in Zhal to not hear the God of Whisper’s offer. I cannot wait to know more about a giant lizard with a metal mouth named Drawbridge, or Patchwork who at one point has her arm ripped off, but she replaces it with an enemies. There’s a healer monkey, a shapeshifter, and someone called The White Lady. I won’t spoil too much on this band of misfits, but they were a lot of fun.

If you are a fan of Rick Remender, buy this book. If you are a fan of fantasy stories, buy this book. Who am I kidding? You should probably just buy this book. In usual Remender fashion, I have no idea where this story is going, and it’s wonderful.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

vision__12Wednesdays are new comic book day!

Joe

Top Pick: The Vision #12 (Marvel) – All good things come to an end, and so bad things. The Vision isn’t a bad book, it’s a phenomenal one, but it does contain a lot of bad things. Heartbreaking things. Tom King has been a machine on this book to use that pun, and has written a fantastic modern day Shakespearean tragedy. This series was something truly special at Marvel, and everyone should see how this ends.

Seven To Eternity #2 (Image Comics) – I loved the first issue of this dark fantasy story by Remender and Opena. It set a high bar for the series and really got me excited to see where it will go next, especially with Remender’s usual gut punches and twists that he does better than anyone in the business.

Saga #39 (Image Comics) – It’s Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples creating one of the best epics we’ve seen in years.  I love this book, and it’s always at the top of my read pile. Even when there is sad moments, the series does a good job of giving you hope. You should be reading this book.

Detective Comics #943 (DC Comics) – Now that the Night of the Monster Men is over, we can get back to the focused awesome stories this book has been telling. Tynion has been so good on this book, and we still have some unanswered questions from the issue before monster men, but I doubt we get answers just yet. Either way, I love this book and what they’ve been doing with the other members of the bat family.

Wonder Woman 75th Anniversary Special (DC Comics) – A large sized comic with a bunch of different writers and artists dedicated to Wonder Woman? Yes please! I’ve loved the different takes on Wonder Woman and especially what Greg Rucka is doing with the character, but it is always great to get different perspectives on such an icon.

Alex

bsusa_001_cover-b_braithwaiteTop Pick: Bloodshot USA #1 (Valiant) – Are we surprised that I’m looking forward to a Valiant comic? We shouldn’t be. Nanite infested plague of killers? Check. A gang of Bloodshots from across the last 70 years? Check. Ninjak? Check. It’s going to be awesome.

Conan The Slayer #4 (Dark Horse) – If you’ve ever read any of Robert E. Howard’s original novels, then you’ll find a sense of familiarity in Cullen Bunn’s narrative. The art is also beautiful, atmospheric and brutal.

Mycroft Holmes and the Apocalypse Handbook #3 (Titan Comics) – We’ve all got our mental picture of Sherlock Holmes as a brilliant, yet  socially awkward fellow. Imagine, then, what an equally brilliant and less socially awkward Holmes would be like (hint: awesome).

Moebius Library: The World Of Edena (Dark Horse) – Be prepared to experience some of the best sequential art you’re ever likely to read.

Brett

VIGILANTE_Cvr_colors-BTop Pick: Vigilante: Southland #1 (DC Comics) – The Vigilante is updated with a new name behind the mask and this one looks to take on some of today’s social issues. I’ve really been looking forward to this one since it was announced as it hopefully gives us a more relevant take on the classic character.

Doctor Strange and the Sorcerers Supreme #1 (Marvel) – Marvel is pushing Doctor Strange with a bunch of series now and pushing the character and the magic aspect of the Marvel Universe into its own special corner. I’m intrigued in seeing how this series stands out and what comes out of it.

The Skeptics #1 (Black Mask Studios) – It’s the 60s and the Russians have the A-bomb, the H-bomb, and a pair of superpowered young people. The US needs a weapon and get their own, except it’s all a trick. The concept sounds amazing. It’s the Cold War in DC, how can I not dig it?

Teen Titans #1 (DC Comics) – Damian leading the Teen Titans? The concept just sounds like fun in a watching a trainwreck sort of way. His attitude plus what I’d consider the Teen Titans’ positive attitude should make for some fun times. Out of all of the Rebirth titles, this one has me really excited to check out.

Transformers: Revolution #1 (IDW Publishing) – I love me some Transformers and to see them brought into a world with so many other properties is really cool. But, I want to see how their bigger world and story folds in and hopefully none of it loses momentum.
