The Savage Strength of Starstorm #1 is a clunker of a start

The Savage Strength of Starstorm #1

Orphaned amnesiac high school student Grant Garrison is just attempting to navigate his present and recall his past when a meteor decimates his school. In the rubble, Grant discovers a strange artifact from another galaxy, the weapon known as the Starstorm, and the power that resides within it will determine not only his and his friends’ future-but the fate of the entire universe. The Savage Strength of Starstorm #1 is an homage to Image Comics’ founders according to Drew Craig and like many early Image releases, it’s a tough read.

Craig delivers an opening chapter that we’ve seen so many times before. Evil aliens are in search of some artifact that falls to Earth and a kid gets ahold of it. That kid, Grant Garrison, then gets superpowers in the form of an alien suit he doesn’t understand. Nothing is new, nothing is super original as far as that.

The characters Grant is introduced to also don’t leave much of an impression. There’s the bully, the “friend” that shows him around school, and the attractive girl. All feel rather hallow, filling a character type than being actual developed characters.

The art by Craig too is a little short. Along with color by Jason Finestone and lettering by Finestone, there’s a roughness to Craig’s style. Designs aren’t consistent and character features look a little off. It’s a personal style, but one I’m not a fan of. Craig does deliver a flair for the action when things get going but the moments are broad making you not focus as much on the rough details.

There’s something a bit throwback about The Savage Strength of Starstorm #1. But, that’s not necessarily a good thing. It’s concept takes centerstage leaving us characters who we’re given little reason to care about. And the concept, so far, is something we’ve seen many times before, again, leaving little reason to get excited about what happens. Maybe the comic improves and delivers something original eventually, but for a start, it feels like an adventure we’ve seen far too many times before.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

DC Pride 2023

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Amazing Spider-Man #26 (Marvel) – Word is out. Someone dies. We want to see how it all goes down.

Ancient Enemies #4 (Frank Miller Presents) – The series has been pretty interesting with its themes and concepts and we want to see how much more it dives into them.

Cat Fight #1 (IDW Publishing) – A mysterious character threatens Felix’s family member to recruit Felix to his crime syndicate. That sends Felix on a mission around the world.

DC Pride 2023 (DC Comics) – We’re always fans of anthologies.

Listen Beautiful Marcia (Fantagraphics) – When a daughter gets in trouble with a gang, her mother steps up to save her.

Local Man #4 (Image Comics) – The series has been a lot of fun mixing in something new with classic Image superhero comics.

North Valley Grimoire #1 (Massive/Whatnot) – It’s spycraft meets spellcraft in a series that’s supernatural suspense with Magicians.

Pathfinder: Wake the Dead #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – The popular tabletop roleplaying game kicks off a new comic adventure with extras for those that play the game.

Power Girl Special #1 (DC Comics) – Power Girl has new powers and looks to be getting a bit of a spotlight. The character has had a bumpy recent history so we’re wondering where this all goes.

Savage Strength of Starstorm #1 (Image Comics) – A high school student finds a strange alien weapon called the Starstorm and the power within will determine the fate of the entire universe.

Starman: David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust Years (SelfMadeHero) – As Bowie fans, it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that this made our list this week.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Saturday Morning Adventures Continued #1 (IDW Publishing) – The first volume was fun and we’re fans of the classic animated series, so we’re excited to check out this second volume!

W0rldtr33 #2 (Image Comics) – The first issue with a “virus” that causes individuals to act in violent ways was intriguing. There was some potential there and we want to see where it goes.
