Saturday is “Neal Adams Day” in Syracuse

Syracuse’s Salt City Comic-Con is excited to announce that the Honorable Stephanie A. Miner, Mayor of the City of Syracuse, has proclaimed Saturday, June 24, to be “Neal Adams Day”.

Neal Adams, the prolific and trend-setting comic artist, is best known for his groundbreaking comic art on characters like Batman, Green Arrow, Superman and the X-Men. Adams is respected for his innovative work in advertising and his passionate efforts championing creators’ rights. Adams is the Guest of Honor at Syracuse’s Salt City Comic-Con this weekend, June 24th and 25th.

The proclamation recognizes that “Neal Adams has been inspiring generations with his skills and vision for the past five decades in comics, graphic novels, and advertising, with his artistic trailblazing, integrity and innovation.

Neal Adams will be meeting fans at his exhibition booth on the showroom floor during this two-day event in downtown Syracuse’s Oncenter.

Our own Brett Schenker will moderate the highly anticipated Neal Adams Panel Discussion Sunday in the Oncenter’s “Hall of Justice” from noon to 1:00 pm.

Neal Adams will also be making a pre-show appearance at Larger Than Life Toys & Comics in the Great Northern Mall in Clay, NY. The event is scheduled from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Thursday, June 22nd and there is no admission fee.

Gil Kane Panel added to Syracuse’s Salt City Comic-Con for this Sunday

Syracuse’s Salt City Comic-Con has just added a new panel to this weekend’s line-up called Gil Kane: Comic Book Storyteller.

Daniel Herman (author of Gil Kane the Art of the Comics, Gil Kane Art and Interviews and Silver Age the Second Generation of Comic Book Artists and Publisher of Hermes Press) will explore the work of one of the most influential artists of the Silver Age of comics, Gil Kane.  Herman will discuss Kane’s impact on art of comic book storytelling, his creation of the first modern graphic novels, his work in animation and more.

The program will begin with a brief video and will explore Kane’s growth starting in the Golden Age.  There will also be a question and answer segment at the end of the program.

Prizes, including Hermes Press’ classic (and out of print) Gil Kane Art and Interviews, and TwoMorrow’s Comic Book Creator issue #11, featuring Gil Kane, will be randomly awarded to panel attendees.

For the Salt City Comic-Con, Hermes will also be offering 100 Convention Exclusives of two titles: The Complete Jim Aparo Charlton Phantom   and The Art of Jim Davis’ Garfield.   Each book will include a “special limited edition insert plate”.  At the convention, Hermes Press will discount 20% off all the rest of their catalog of books.

This Gil Kane panel is scheduled for Sunday, June 25th, at 4:00 PM in the Hall of Justice at Salt City Comic-Con.

Syracuse’s Salt City Comic-Con teams with Empire Brewing Co for Pregame Event and Exclusive Beer

Salt City Comic-Con is partnering with Empire Brewing Co. to announce a Comic-Con Pre-Game Night on Wednesday, June 21, 2017.   This special event will be held at Empire’s downtown brewpub location from 6:00 to 11:00 and will help central New York fans prepare for June’s comic convention, scheduled for the following weekend at the Syracuse OnCenter.

Empire Brewery will debut their new beer, Barley Quinn, an exclusive beer especially crafted for Syracuse’s Salt City Comic-Con.

Salt City Comic-Con will host a Trivia Contest to award prizes to winners. Prizes include comic-con tickets, comics and merchandise.

Cosplayers will also be invited and prizes will also be awarded for the best cosplay.  Comics professional, and “Homegrown Hero”, Tom Peyer will be on hand to help judge the Cosplay Contest and autograph copies of his recent comic Captain Kid, published by Aftershock Comics.

Empire Brewery Co. will be offering select onsite specials for comic-con fans throughout the weekend.

Syracuse University & Salt City Comic-Con Partner to Host Comic Art Events

The Special Collections Research Center [SCRC] at Syracuse University Libraries, in conjunction with The Salt City Comic-Con, have announced a special viewing opportunity of original comic art and panel discussion on Friday, June 23, 2017.

The SCRC will present selected original works from its holdings by comic masters including Hal Foster (Prince Valiant), Frank Robbins (Johnny Hazard), Stan Drake (The Heart of Juliet Jones), Irwin Hasen (Dondi) and more. Casual fans, hard core collectors and art historians are invited to view original comic and cartoon art from industry legends maintained in the Syracuse University collections.

 

These events will serve as “Salt City Comic-con Eve” activities to celebrate the convention. The one-day viewing will be held on the sixth floor of Syracuse University’s Bird Library on Friday, June 23, from 10:00 to noon and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

The Special Collections Research Center will also host a Friday evening panel discussion at 5:00 p.m. on June 23, 2017 in the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons at Syracuse University Libraries.  This panel will explore and discuss the many original comic art treasures of the collection.  Panelists will include Craig Yoe, comic art historian and publisher, and Dan Herman, publisher of Hermes Press and also a well-regarded comics art historian.  Pop culture and marketing expert Ed Catto, of Bonfire Agency, will moderate the panel.

 

This event is free and open the public. Syracuse University’s Bird Library is located at 222 Waverly Avenue. Door prizes will be awarded to random attendees of the panel discussion.

 

Craig Yoe to appear at Syracuse’s Salt City Comic-Con

Syracuse’s Salt City Comic-Con is welcoming Craig Yoe, and Yoe Books, to the growing guest list.

The Eisner-Award winning archivist has been called “The Indiana Jones of comics historians” by Vice Magazine. His Yoe Books, an imprint of IDW Publishing, specializes in exposing a new generation to comics’ history in all genres –horror, superheroes, funny animals, satire and more.

Schweinfurth Art Center is Holding a Cosplay Event with Syracuse’s Salt City Comic-Con and Cosplay by McCalls

Syracuse’s Salt City Comic-Con and Cosplay by McCalls have teamed up with the Schweinfurth Art Center to host a cosplay event in Auburn, NY. The event will be held at the Schweinfurth Art Center on Saturday, June 10, from 4-7pm. CNY cosplayers are invited to show off and compete in Auburn’s first ever cosplay contest! Entry to this family friendly event is free for both cosplayers and non-costumed participants.

Cash prizes ($100 each) will be awarded in four categories:

  • Bronze: Kids –Age 12 & under
  • Silver: Teens & Twentysomethings – Ages 13 to 25
  • Gold: Adult – Ages 26 and up
  • Platinum: Team Cosplay – Any ages: groups of three or more

The event will include make-up demonstrations, cosplay photo stages, super hero selfies (where all fans can take pictures of themselves with cosplayers), a cosplay costume “tune-up” station, and snacks and refreshments.

Cosplay Invades Auburn” is a preview event in anticipation of Syracuse’s Salt City Comic-Con, Central New York’s largest summer celebration of pop culture.  Salt City Comic-Con will offer a free raffle for all attendees to the Auburn event. The prizes include pairs of two-day tickets to Salt City Comic-Con (four prizes) and pair of VIP tickets to Salt City Comic-Con (one prize).

One lucky winner will be awarded the special “Convention’s Choice,” a copy of the limited collector’s edition Syracuse Salt City Comic-Con exclusive comic starring Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Batman. The cover is illustrated by comic legend Neal Adams, and features a local landmark, the Niagara Mohawk Building, to celebrate this artist’s return to Central New York for the convention.

The Auburn event on Saturday, June 10 will include registration from 4-5pm, photo time from 5 to 6 and the costume awards ceremony at 6:30. The festivities will end at 7pm. Cosplayers are encouraged to participate in Auburn’s Sizzlin’ Summer events that same evening, which will include live music and food vendors a few blocks from the Schweinfurth in downtown Auburn.

Hermes Press Brings Exclusives to Syracuse’s Salt City Comic-Con

Syracuse’s Salt City Comic-Con welcomes Hermes Press, one of the premiere publishers of pop culture art books and comic reprints, to their June comic convention.

For over 15 years Hermes has been dedicated to producing accurate restorations of classic comics from The Phantom to Zorro. Hermes has also produced archival art books ranging from monographs about Gil Kane (Green Lantern, The Atom, and The Amazing Spider-man), Frank Frazetta (Conan the Barbarian), and Jim Davis (Garfield). Hermes has a unique focus on the history behind the artists who created comic books and strips, and over the years has published books that explore areas never before seen, such as the complete history of Flash Gordon and Rip Kirby creator Alex Raymond, written by noted comics historian Ron Goulart. Hermes has also begun reprinting the historical pocket book Phantom series originally published by Avon Publications. Along with their reprints and histories, Hermes also publishes original comic series such as Howard Chaykin’s Buck Rogers and Peter David’s The Phantom, and more.

At the convention, Hermes Press will also be offering 20% off all books at the show.

The Complete Jim Aparo Charlton Phantom is a deluxe hardcover in full color, complete with dust jacket and endpapers. The great Jim Aparo got his first big break with Charlton Comics and did standout work on The Phantom that garnered him praise throughout the industry. Now, for first the time, all of Aparo’s Phantom stories and covers are collected in one volume which focuses on this great artist’s outstanding work on The Ghost Who Walks.

The Art of Jim Davis’ Garfield, an art monograph on the history of Garfield and artist Jim Davis is a collaborative effort with Paws, Incorporated. For the first time ever, fans of Garfield, Jon, and Odie will be treated to a huge, all-color, all original art book, The Art of Jim Davis’ Garfield. Starting with an original essay by noted historian R. C. Harvey, this art book takes fans through the history of Jim Davis and Garfield, and how the furry feline has grown in popularity and style over the years, discussing many of the mediums Garfield is represented in, from the Garfield and Friends television show to the live-action movies, to the current strip.

Hermes will also be selling a small quantity of The Art of Jim Davis’ Garfield Signed Limited Editions at the convention.
