Review: Book Of Death #4

bod4cAn evil Geomancer has torn the world asunder. The dark puppet master pulling the strings has been unmasked. And the Valiant Universe as we know it is being torn apart. The end is here!

I could praise the writing and artwork in this final issue, but I’ve been doing that all series long, and I feel I may be beating a dead horse by doing that – that being said, though, Robert Vendetti has written the most brilliantly suited final chapter to this arc that you could hope for, and between Robert Gill an Doug Braithwaite, the art is all I could have hoped for. I honestly could talk about both the writing and art work so much more (they’re both fantastic, and have been over the entire series), but to do so I would stray dangerously close to the spoiler territory that I want to avoid.

Because of that the review of Book Of Death #4 as a comic will probably be shorter than most other reviews that I’ve written lately.

The finale to Valiant‘s four part summer brings the arc to a close nicely; if you haven’t red this series, then either pick up the collected edition when it’s released, or the four single issues if you can find them – although be aware that if you do want to read Wrath Of The Eternal Warrior without reading this series there may be the odd spoiler for Book Of Death contained within Wrath; and if you do skip Book Of Death then you’ll miss out on the best event comic from any publisher from 2015, which would be a shame.

The main Book Of Death series was fantastic, and I’m saying that as somebody who knew relatively little about Valiant‘s characters (although full disclosure, I always like the idea of The Eternal Warrior, so with this series focusing on him more than the other major Valiant characters probably explains my enthusiasm for the series). The four tie in comics easilly available have, for the most part, also been very good – the one comic I wasn’t a huge fan of was because of my lack of familiarity with the characters involved (Book Of Death: Fall Of Harbinger). Valiant promised a tale for the ages, and they have delivered with the main series.

Book Of Death #4 is a great way to bring a close to an event that took me by surprise with the first issue (I never expected to enjoy it as much as I did), and the consistent quality of both the writing and art never let up from that opening salvo.

Simply put, this is a story you must read.

Book of Death #1 – The Future Stands Revealed in the Epic Valiant Event of Summer 2015!

So let it be written… So let it be done… On July 15th, the next two thousand years of history collide with the most powerful heroes of today in the must-read event of the summer!

Valiant has released a first look inside Book of Death #1 (of 4) – the 40-page FIRST ISSUE of the blockbuster Valiant event of 2015 from New York Times best-selling writer Robert Venditti and the twin artistic talents of rising star Robert Gill and Valiant heavyweight Doug Braithwaite!

The Valiant heroes. X-O Manowar. Bloodshot. Ninjak. The Harbinger Renegades. Unity. This is how they lived. This is how they died.

Now we know. The Book of the Geomancer has recorded it all. But only a young girl – the last in a line of the enigmatic mystics who protect the Earth known as Geomancers – has seen this future come to pass, from the coming cataclysm to the dawn of the 41st century. Alone with her sworn protector, the Eternal Warrior – a soldier battle-forged across five thousand years of combat – the duo must defy their allies to stop the Dark Age that now threatens to eclipse our world.

Together, they are the number one target of every hero and villain on Earth. Either the Eternal Warrior hands her over…or they take him down. But can even he single-handedly protect one child when the entire Valiant Universe wages war against him?

Featuring the last stands of Valiant icons, the first appearances of all-new heroes, and tantalizing clues of future events, Book of Death is the gateway to the next decade of the Valiant Universe that will have fans returning to each issue for years to come!
