After landing in jail following a night of drunken revelry, Red Sonja hears an outlandish story from a fellow inmate. Deep in the mountains lies a dead city in a valley with no name. Abandoned and forgotten, its fields and streets are littered with the bones of two armies, all destroyed by a curse from a warlock who has long since vanished, along with his vast treasure — untold riches just waiting to be taken.

At least that is the legend. But Sonja’s cellmate Morgo has more than a diverting tale — he’s also got a map that says this legend could well be reality. All they need to do is break out of lockup and hit the road — which may be easier said than done!

Written by horror legend STEVE NILES (30 Days of Night) with stunning art by ALESSANDRO AMORUSO, Red Sonja: Empire of the Damned collects all five issues of the acclaimed miniseries, together with a complete cover gallery!

As the She-Devil and her party close in on the dead city and its fabled treasure, disaster strikes when Luna goes missing. Lukas and Sonja don’t trust Grimore — the old man who joined them on the road — as far as they can throw him, and his explanation for Luna’s disappearance rings hollow. But in the absence of any hard evidence of malice, they decide to let him keep his head — a decision they may live (briefly) to regret!

The acclaimed creative team of writer STEVE NILES and artist ALESSANDRO AMORUSO set the stage for a bloody Hyborian showdown with Red Sonja: Empire of the Damned #4, featuring spellbinding covers from JOSHUA MIDDLETON, JOSEPH MICHAEL LINSNER, CELINA, and cosplay by RACHEL HOLLON!

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

The Sandman #19

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Akogun: Brutalizer of Gods #1 (Oni Press) – In an age thought forgotten . . . when man, monster, and the divine all strode the Earth . . . a lone warrior emerges to test the immortality of the cruel gods who would deal destruction with impunity…

Deadpool #1 (Marvel) – It’s a new era for Deadpool and we’re always intrigued to see how new teams spin the character.

Godzilla vs. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers II #1 (IDW Publishing/BOOM! Studios) – The first volume was a hell of a lot of fun and we’re expecting more!

Principles of Necromancy #1 (Magma Comix) – The debut from Magma Comix has Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly writing and Eamon Winkle on art. The concept of a physician during the times of barbarians and knights wanting to overcome death sounds intriguing.

Red Sonja: Empire of the Damned #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – Steve Niles writing Red Sonja. Nuff said.

The Sandman #19 Remastered (DC Comics/DC Black Label) – A new printing of the classic depiction of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Spider-Man: Shadow of the Green Goblin #1 (Marvel) – Norman Osborn was not the first goblin… wait, what?!

Traveling to Mars #11 (Ablaze) – Roy’s journey comes to an end as he reflects on his life and those that will live on.

Void Rivals #8 (Skybound) – The previous issue kicked off the new arc and introduced an intriguing bounty hunter to capture the fugitives. While it wasn’t the strongest issue, we’re still intrigued to see how this Energon Universe connected series keeps building its own mythos.

Red Sonja: Empire of the Damned #1

Red Sonja and Steve Niles Take on the Undead!

The She-Devil With a Sword is slicing into a brand new title this April, pairing with legendary writer Steve Niles for the first time ever for an epic tale overflowing with the undead!

After landing in jail following a night of drunken revelry, a frequent Sonja specialty, the Hyrkanian heroine hears a shocking story from a fellow inmate. This is the first she’s heard of the infamous “Empire of the Damned,” a dead city hidden deep in a valley amidst the mountains. Long abandoned and forgotten, the city’s haunting streets are littered with the bones of two armies, locked in battle but obliterated by a warlock’s curse. The evil spellcaster is long gone too, but he may have left around his vast treasure or the clues to find it.

Sonja’s new pal Morgo claims that not only is this legend true, but he’s got a map and the drive for adventure. He’s just met a willing and fearsome companion for his quest. They just need to prioritize breaking out of lockup first! Fans will get to hang out with even more fun new characters in the series, like a powerful young witch named Luna.

Through his works, Niles is also known for often collaborating with artists of a similar wavelength, such as superstars Bernie Wrightson, Ben Templesmith, and Kelley Jones. The next to join that legacy of artists will be Alessandro Amoruso, set for his breakout story.

The team is joined on their quest by a party of top talents contributing covers. Joshua Middleton‘s gorgeous style mixes perfectly with the horror twist here. Joseph Michael Linsner, Philip Tan, cosplayer Rachel Hollon, and a signature color bleed/negative space cover from John Tyler Christopher round out the set on the first issue.

Red Sonja: Empire of the Damned delivers monsters, magic, and mayhem in equal measure. It’s a can’t-miss chapter in the chronicles of the Hyborian Age!
