Skybound X #1

Wednesdays (and now Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Black’s Myth #1 (AHOY Comics) – Meet Janie “Strummer” Jones, just an ordinary werewolf PI, trying to make it on the mean streets of LA. Yeah, we’re sold just on that.

Clans of Belari #1 (AfterShock) – On the far side of the galaxy, an isolated branch of humanity is trapped in a feudal dystopia. Order is maintained by a system of oppression until an orphaned girl and her incorrigible adoptive father sow the seeds of a revolution and unite the clans against a fearsome alien threat. The sci-fi epic story we’re fans of.

Extreme Carnage: Alpha #1 (Marvel) – Post King in Black we get to see what the new status quo is for the various symbiotes.

Fight Girls #1 (AWA Studios) – Ten hard-as-nails women face off in an ancient contest of champions where the winner truly takes all: the title of “Queen of the Galaxy.” The series has been a long time coming so we’re interested in seeing what it’s all about.

The Good Asian #3 (Image Comics) – This series has been an amazing exploration of the real-life history of racism in America mixed with a fantastic noir story.

Hellboy & the BPRD: Secret of Chesbro House #1 (Dark Horse) – Hellboy works with a psychic to clear a haunted mansion for auction. But the ghosts in residence aren’t quite ready to go gentle into that good night. Sounds fun to us!

Justice League Infinity #1 (DC Comics) – The popular animated series continues in comics!

Life is Strange: Coming Home #1 (Titan Comics) – The popular video game returns to comics just before the remastered original is released.

Mamo #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Can Orla O’Reilly embrace her destiny in order to bridge the divide between humanity and the faerie world? Sounds great.

Masters of the Universe: Revelation #1 (Dark Horse) – The highly anticipated Netflix series gets a comic tie-in.

The Nice House on the Lake #2 (DC Comics/DC Black Label) – The first issue caught us completely off guard and the series seems to be taking us on a hell of a horror journey.

Nocterra #5 (Image Comics) – The previous issue delivered a glimmer of light and hope in a world of darkness. We’re sucked in and want to see where this series goes. The story has been solid and its visuals fantastic.

Ordinary Gods #1 (Image Comics) – Five gods are trapped in an endless cycle of human death and reincarnation.

Rabid World #2 (Scout Comics) – We were hooked by the first issue which had a nice mix of zombie-ish tropes and “ripped from the headlines” vibe as a virus spreads across the world causing a rabies like reaction in people.

Skybound X #1 (Image Comics/Skybound) – Get this just for the collector aspect of it. The series is spotlighting a lot of Skybound’s series and comics to come with quite a few major debuts.

Tales Told in Technihorror #1 (Scout Comics/Black Caravan) – A biennial horror series that brings together the best in horror sub genres with five short stories.

The Unwanted: Stories of Syrian Refugees (Etch/HMH Books For Young Readers) – Don Brown depicts moments of both heartbreaking horror and hope in the ongoing Syrian refugee crisis.

WWE The New Day: Power of Positivity #1 (BOOM! Studios) – The popular WWE wrestlers get a comic spotlighting their positivity!

X-Men #1 (Marvel) – The first volume of the new direction for the X-Men is over and the heroes are now back saving all of humanity and not just mutants.

Review: Rabid World #1

Rabid World #1 kicks off a zombie story that’s rather familiar but it’s done really well. Mixed with great art, it’s a series we can’t wait to see what happens next.

Review: Rabid World #1

Rabid World #1

In a post-COVID world, zombie stories feel so different. Watching those stores on film or television or reading them in comics, you can’t help but think about this real-world experience we’ve had for over a year at this point. We know how people would react, both good and bad, and what failures actually exist. You can at it not with a “what if” but now with a “how does it compare”. Rabid World #1 delivers a new spin on that sort of story with an American take on 28 Days Later.

Written by Todd Cinani, the story focuses on two couples as all hell breaks loose. One couple features a virologist and another in the world of animal behavior research. The other is their friends. We get a story of divergent paths as a disease outbreak happens leading to chaos. A rabies-like disease has spread impact humans all around the world. Rabid World #1 gives us a slice of that story narrowed in on the area around Baltimore and Washington, DC as both couples need to deal. One set is called to duty to help stop the spread while the other just wants to survive.

Rabid World #1 is a fantastic start to the series. It delivers a frightening build until chaos has consumed the areas. It both does and does not go over the top with that as we get a better idea as to what’s happening in the world. For someone that lives in the area, the comic’s focus is fun as roads and town are rattled off. The most unrealistic thing about the comic isn’t the rabid individuals, it might be the lack of traffic in an area that’s known for it.

The art by Oleg Okunev is really interesting. There’s some use of color and it’s a style that’s hard to describe. There’s generally grey coloring throughout with a splash of color to emphasize moments. The style of the characters is perfect for the type of comic and the locations, knowing the area, feel familiar. Lucas Gattoni‘s lettering does a good job with some pages packed with dialogue and others not so much. There’s also very smart use of color to indicate where the dialogue is coming from.

The comic nails its zombie roots with a fantastic build to those final moments. We learn about the characters in an organic way that flows though there’s one bit that’s a bit too much of a foreshadowing of what’s likely coming. The comic nails the tense build as individuals barely escape and the mobs’ swarm. It’s exactly what fans of the genre will want and that’s a good thing. It teases a lot of what has happened using gore to emphasize instead of shock delivering a debut that’s one to watch.

The Recount #3

Wednesdays (and now Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Alien #1 (Marvel) – The classic property comes to Marvel! The publisher has done amazing stuff when it comes to expanding the world of Star Wars and we’re hoping for the same here.

Allergic (Graphix) – Maggie wants a pet to play with. Unfortunately, she’s allergic to anything with fur!

Carnage: Black, White, and Blood #1 (Marvel) – The various “color” comics coming out have been solid and we’re excited to check out a new one.

Harley Quinn #1 (DC Comics) – A new volume kicking off from Future State. That mini-event had a great take on the character and we’re hoping this continues that direction.

Morrison Hotel (Z2 Comics) – The influential band gets an anthology focused on their impact and the lore about them.

Rabid World #1 (Scout Comics) – A rabies-like disease has broken out around the world. This is a story of two couples, one trying to survive and the other trying to save the world.

The Recount #3 (Scout Comics) – The series has been amazing so far following the follow out of a corrupt President and those rising up to exact vengeance against anyone that supported him.

Shadow Doctor #2 (AfterShock) – The true story about a Black doctor in the 1930s who turned to the mob to get the money he needed to start a practice.

Stray Dogs #2 (Image Comics) – The first issue was fantastic. A small dog winds up in a new home not knowing how they got there. Flashes of their former life hint at murder. It’s an interesting series, a noir murder mystery from the perspective of a dog.

Teen Titans Academy #1 (DC Comics) – The Teen Titans decide to train and teach the next generation of heroes. But, we know the possible deadly future that is ahead for them.

It’s a Fight for Survival in Rabid World

It was like any other morning, until it wasn’t. Growing from the rural areas, it was a simple dog bite, but the end of the day…civilization was collapsing. The outbreak left people rabid, devoid of their humanity, left only with a violent rage.

With the world in shambles, a group of friends must try to weather the storm and survive. While one couple works to find a vaccine at a long-forgotten bio-weapons research facility, the other flees by sailboat in search of salvation from the perils of a new chaotic existence.

Will a vaccine be found? Will the survivors make it to a safe place to hole up? Find out in Rabid World!

Written by Todd Cinani and art by Oleg Okunev, Rabid World will be published by Scout Comics.
