PlayStation Portable Comic Content Closes

Sony sent out a message about the the closure of comic books on their Playstation Portable. Comics will no longer be available after October 30, 2012 in the Playstation Store.

After this date users will be unable to purchase comic content from the PS Store’s Comic Store. Where licenses permit, previously purchased or downloaded content will still be available for download until mid- January 2013. After this date users will no longer be able to re-download any previously purchased content. You can, however back up your content using Media Go.

Does that count as another digital comic service out of business? It remains to be seen if someone or something else will fill in the gap.

IDW Publishing and Ape Entertainment bring Infestation to the Pocket God Universe

Official Press Release

IDW Publishing and Ape Entertainment bring INFESTATION to the POCKET GOD Universe

POCKET GOD joins TRANSFORMERS, Star Trek, G.I. JOE and Ghostbusters in IDW’s massive crossover event, now on the iPad™ and iPhone®

[Pocket God Infestation image]San Diego, CA (May 17, 2011)—IDW Publishing and Ape Entertainment today announced the release of POCKET GOD: INFESTATION, now available for iPads and iPhones everywhere only through the free INFESTATION Comics app. This first partnership between IDW and Ape offers a special $0.99, digital-only, full-length comic story of yet another infested universe – the world of the insanely popular POCKET GOD game.

INFESTATION is IDW’s hugely successful comic series that infects the TRANSFORMERS, G.I. JOE, Ghostbusters, and Star Trek universes with legions of undead. This unparalleled, never-before-seen event is now available digitally through the Apple App Store in the INFESTATION Comics app, made specially for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. Readers can view full size pages, or read panel-by-panel simply by turning the iPhone or iPod touch horizontally. The app includes all the issues of the IDW event, as well as special features, such as a cover gallery and character designs.

What was intended to be a small side project for Dave Castelnuovo and Allan Dye one winter week has turned into one of the biggest franchises on the App Store, with Pocket God becoming a smash hit just months after its release. With over four-million units sold and thirty-five free updates, which have introduced mini-games, new islands to discover, and creative ways to smite Pygmies, Pocket God continues to impress day one fans and new players alike with its irreverent humor and originality.

“We’re excited to bring out POCKET GOD: INFESTATION,” stated Jeff Webber, IDW’s director of ePublishing. “This was a perfect storm of events – Michael Murphey, CEO of iVerse, brought IDW, Ape and Bolt together with the crazy idea of one more universe that needed infesting. POCKET GOD comics have been one of the biggest comics phenomenon of the iOS App Store. By bringing that audience into IDWs INFESTATION event, we are truly exposing comics to millions of Pocket God game fans and potential new comics readers!”

IDW’s free INFESTATION app features POCKET GOD: INFESTATION for only $0.99. The INFESTATION app also includes the free preview edition, plus digital-only versions of the issue checklist and a cover and character designs gallery. Readers can also download the 40-page kick-off story, INFESTATION #1, for only $0.99.

IDW Brings Doctor Who Comics to iPads, iPhones and PSPs

Official Press Release

IDW Brings DOCTOR WHO Comics to iPads, iPhones and PSPs

BBC Worldwide America and IDW Publishing bring DOCTOR WHO comics
to digital audiences worldwide

[Doctor Who comics on the iPad]San Diego, CA (March 19, 2011) – IDW Publishing and BBC Worldwide America have today announced the global digital launch of IDW’s critically acclaimed DOCTOR WHO comic book series. Doctor Who fans worldwide can now follow the Doctor’s comic book adventures on their Apple iPads and iPhones, and Sony PSPs, along with IDW Publishing’s entire catalog of DOCTOR WHO comics, which is now out in digital form.

One of BBC Worldwide’s most successful franchises and the longest running science-fiction television series in the world, Doctor Who follows the adventures of the Doctor, the mysterious traveler who, with his human companions, journeys throughout all of time and space, facing a variety of foes and righting wrongs. IDW’s extensive catalog of DOCTOR WHO comics features both original stories and reprints of classic adventures. Currently, IDW’s DOCTOR WHO brings readers all-new adventures of the Eleventh Doctor that augment the on-screen excitement.

“We’re excited to bring out DOCTOR WHO comics on the PSP, as it’s a perfect comic for the game audience,” stated Jeff Webber, IDW’s director of ePublishing. “For Apple devices, while all of the issues are also available in our IDW Comics app for our regular readers, there are many ravenous DOCTOR WHO fans that may not be familiar with the comics. So we created a stand-alone DOCTOR WHO Comics app that lets us feature the Doctor at the top level of the app store, offering users worldwide a completely focused experience.”

Ed Casey, Director of Licensing, BBC Worldwide America, who brokered the deal, said: “DOCTOR WHO fans are loyal and passionate and I’m sure they’ll love the fact that they can now get their [Doctor Who comics on the PSP]favorite Time Lord in this 21st century format.”

Prior to this digital launch, IDW’s DOCTOR WHO comics were only available in print in North America. Available to international readers for the first time, DOCTOR WHO digital series presently includes over forty issues, with more added each month. The full catalog is available for iPads and iPhones as a custom branded app, and as individual issues on the PSP.

Added Webber, “Plus, it’s just awesomely fun to build an app that keeps the look and feel of something that could be a part of the TARDIS itself. It’s just possible that the app might start pulling in comics from the future that haven’t even been created yet!”

Doctor Who returns to BBC AMERICA screens in the U.S. on Saturday, April 23.
