This Country: Searching For Home in Very Rural America

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Batman #137 (DC Comics) – The opening chapter to “Gotham War” set things up nicely but didn’t excite, maybe the second chapter will?

Birds of Prey #1 (DC Comics) -Kelly Thompson makes her DC debut with this new take on the classic team!

Black Panther #4 (Marvel) – The series has taken the character and brought him more to the street level like the underrated “Man Without Fear” run. It’s been a nice refreshing take on the character.

Blue Beetle #1 (DC Comics) – A new ongoing series as Jaime Reyes joins the “Dawn of DC”!

Dona Quixote: Rise of the Knight (Henry Holt) – Middle-schooler by day. Monster hunter by (k)night. Lucia Castillo dreams of being a hero like her grandfather. A new take on the classic tale.

Hunt for the Skinwalker #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Head to the infamous remote ranch in the Uinta Basin that has been the most significant nexus for the paranormal.

Kill Your Darlings #1 (Image Comics) – Rose pretends to be in a magical land of her own creation byt the line between fantasy and reality disappears.

Parker Girls #10 (Abstract Studios) – The solid action series wraps up and we’re hoping the tech billionaire gets everything he deserves.

Project Cryptid #1 (AHOY Comics) – A new anthology series with some amazing talent. This is one to not be missed.

Reflection (Massive Publishing) – Detective Lorena Baffo dreams of a horrific murder. As the dream ends, she looks up to see herself reflected in glass, with the victim’s blood in her hands.

Tear Us Apart #1 (Dark Horse) – Deep in the Canadian wilderness, a vicious cult, dedicated to an ideology of pain, trains children to become deadly assassins. In the midst of this world of cruelty, two teenagers break the cardinal rule-by falling in love.

This Country: Searching For Home in Very Rural America (Princeton Architectural Press) – Before Navied Mahdavian moved with his wife and dog in November of 2016 from San Francisco to an off-the-grid cabin in rural Idaho, he had never fished, gardened, hiked, hunted, or lived in a snowy place. AHOY Comics’ Project: Cryptid takes you around the world with a who’s who list of creators

For the last five years, AHOY Comics has asked its readers to believe in the weird and sublime — whether it’s a friendship between Jesus and a superhero, a grandmother who fights eldritch horrors, or a space squadron run entirely by cats. This fall, AHOY Comics’ latest jam-packed anthology, Project: Cryptid, will feature unbelievably hilarious and hilariously unbelievable tales about cryptids from around the world. Featuring comics and short stories from well-established creators as well as new voices, Project: Cryptid will transport readers from the depths of Loch Ness to the wilds of the Yeti’s Himalayan Mountains to the Ohio backroads where the Loveland Frogman lurks, asking the important questions like are any of these mysterious, unthinkable creatures actually real? And more importantly, are they funny?

The anthology will feature comics and stories from writers Mark Russell, Paul Cornell, Alisa Kwitney, Alex Segura, Bryce Ingman, Paul Constant, Liana Kangas, Henry Barajas, AA Rubin, Joe Illidge, Melissa Olsen, Zander Cannon, Gene Ha, Hanna Bahedry, Matt Ligeti, Stuart Moore and more, as well as art by Jordi Perez, Madeline Seeley, PJ Holden, Mike Spicer, Mauricet, Steven Bryant, Peter Krause, Richard Pace, Jamal Igle, Ted and Ro, Lew Stringer, Lane Lloyd, and more.

Project: Cryptid will be published monthly by AHOY Comics and available in stores on September 6, 2023.

AHOY Comics celebrates 5 years with new series, specials, and Grant Morrison

In addition to top-quality story and art, AHOY Comics has become known for the short prose extras that run in the back of every title. Now, as part of the publisher’s gala fifth anniversary, a baker’s dozen of the comics industry’s finest prose writers have combined to craft an epic serial that will run through the AHOY line this fall.

THE ALL-STAR ANNUALLY CONVENING COZY DETECTIVES CLUB in PARTIALLY NAKED CAME THE CORPSE!

…is a thirteen-part epic that kicks off with an extra-long first installment by the bestselling writer Grant Morrison, whose many award-winning comics works include JLA, New X-Men, and Green Lantern, and whose first novel Luda was published last year to great acclaim. The serial will debut in Project Cryptid #1, the first of AHOY’s new fall titles.

Over the following three months, Partially Naked Came the Corpse! will weave in and out of all AHOY’s regular titles, plus the fifth anniversary specials The Wrong Earth: We Can Be Heroes #1-2 and new title Deadweights #1. Finally, in late November, Partially Naked Came the Corpse! will conclude with a bang in the Captain Ginger: The Last Feeder #1, the first of another two-part anniversary series.

Writers include recent award-winners Mark Russell and Alex Segura, Marvel writer Torunn Grønbekk, plus a murderer’s row of AHOY stars: Bryce Ingman, Carol Lay, Carrie Harris, Hanna Bahedry, Audrey Ryer, Kirk Vanderbeek, Lisa Jonte, Stuart Moore, and Kek-w. Illustrator Jon Proctor’s mind-blowing artwork will adorn each installment.

Project: Cryptid #1 which will be available in stores on September 6, 2022.
